Description
A MAKE-UP DEVICE
The present invention relates to a make-up device, and in particular to a make-up device with illumination facility.
It is known to provide a make-up mirror incorporating a light for use in a low light environment. The present invention seeks to provide an alternative to such lighting for make-up.
Thus according to the present invention there is provided a make-up device comprising a holder and a plurality of make-up applicators selectively and interchangeably supportable by the holder and a light-emitting device carried by the holder for directing light towards a make-up applying portion of a said applicator supported by the holder.
Preferably, the holder has a transparent or translucent head which supports the selected applicator and which carries the light-emitting device.
More preferably, the light-emitting device is in the form of a light bulb which is mounted in the head of the holder behind an integral lens portion of the head, the light bulb being powered by a battery in circuit connection with a switch.
Advantageously, the holder comprises two separable parts engageable together by thread means, a battery compartment being provided in one of the parts.
Preferably, the switch comprises two contacts provided respectively on the two parts of the holder and arranged to make contact with or separate from each other by means of the operation of the thread means.
More preferably, the holder has a compartment for accommodating the plurality of make-up applicators which may comprise a nail-polish applicator, a blusher brush, an eye-shadow applicator and an eyelash brush.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a make-up device embodying the invention; and
Figure 2 is a partial sectional side view of the make-up device of Figure 1;
The make-up device shown in Figure 1 comprises a holder 10 and a plurality of make-up applicators 11 selectively and interchangeably supportable by the holder 10. The plurality of applicators 11 include a nail-polish applicator lla, an eyelash brush llb, an eye-shadow applicator lic and a blusher brush lld.
The holder 10 has a transparent or translucent head 13 in which an axially-extending recess 14 is provided to fittably receive an end 9 of a selected applicator 11.
A light-emitting device in the form of a light bulb 12 is mounted in the head 13 of the holder 10. The head forms a lens for directing light towards a make-up applying portion 8 of the applicator 11 when supported by the holder 10.
As shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, the holder 10 comprises two separable plastics parts 15 and 16 engageable together by a screw thread 17. The upper part 15 of the holder 10 supports the head 13, and the lower part 16 thereof provides a compartment for accommodating batteries 18 in circuit connection with a switch 19 to power the light bulb 12. The two contacts 19a and 19b of the switch 19 are in the form of two annular bronze collars provided respectively on the two holder parts- 15 and 16.
The holder part 15 carries external thread behind which the annular contact l9a is mounted. The annular contact l9b is mounted by glue in the open end of the holder part 16 and carries an internal thread engageable with the external thread of the holder part 15.
One terminal 12a of the light bulb 12 is electrically connected to the annular contact 19a, whilst the other terminal 12b thereof is electrically connected to a first battery contact 20 provided at one end of the holder part 15 remote from the head 13. The annular contact l9b is electrically connected to a second battery contact in the form of a metallic coil spring 21 via a metallic strip 22 along the inner surface of the holder part 16.
In use, the batteries 18 are loaded into the compartment of the holder part 16 with the appropriate polarities.
The two parts 15 and 16 of the holder 10 are then screwed together. As the parts 15 and 16 are screwed together, the batteries 18 make respective electrical contacts with the battery contacts 20 and 21. Further screwing together of the parts 15 and 16 will urge the annular switch contacts l9a and 19b towards and finally against each other as the parts 15 and 16 are screwed home. The spring 21 will compress to allow the batteries to move down under the engaging force of the contact 20. The switch 19 is now closed and completes the electrical circuit to power the light bulb 12 by the batteries 18. The application of make-up by means of the supported applicator 11 will then be illuminated by the light bulb 12 through the head 13 when, in particular, in a low light environment.
To turn off the light bulb 12, the switch 19 is opened by screwing the parts 15 and 16 slightly apart forming a gap between them.
Alternatively, the make-up device holder 10 may be used as a torch in a dark environment.
The invention is described by way of example only and various modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art. It is intended to include all such modifications as fall within the scope of invention defined by the appended claims.
