Computing-apparatus. - An optical indicating device for use with weighing-scales having a number of adjacent movable number scales, for example, the surface markings of a computing drum, comprises a reading device including means for selectively illuminating any desired scale and for reflecting from the surface of the chart an image of the selected illuminated scale upon a reading screen. As applied to a computing weighing-scale, Fig. 3, the drum housing 10 is provided with guides 18, 23 along which a casing 25 may be slid by means of a handle 27. The front end of the casing carries a tapered tube 37 extending into a box 15 secured to the drum housing. The tube 37 terminates close to a ground glass screen 16. A price per pound scale 19 indicates the position of the casing 25. Within the casing is an electric lamp 30 from which the light is directed by a lens 32 and mirror 33 to the value scale on the computing drum 11. The salesman by looking through an aperture 40 and aligning two wires 41 may thus read off the money value of the goods. The light from the value scale thus illuminated is also reflected by a mirror 34 through a lens 35, and from a mirror 36 on to the screen 16 thus producing an enlarged image of the value reading visible to the customer at the front of the machine. Weight graduations are provided on the drum for direct observation through apertures at both sides of the machine. In a modification, Fig. 6, the drum has two sets of value graduations for each price per pound, and a single lamp 30 in conjunction with a system of lenses and mirrors projects the value images on to two screens 16, 16<a>. A pointer 29<a> indicates the price-per-pound setting on a strip 19<a> secured to the drum housing. In a further modification, two lamps, one for each screen, are employed instead of a single lamp.
