Abstract
A light lens, e.g. of a vehicle, is provided with a protective outer layer of transparent material, e.g. plastics. The layer may be provided with an adhesive coating or bonded to the lens by heat treatment, or a separate adhesive may be applied. The layer may be up to 4 mm thick to resist impact damage caused by stones. The layer also helps to hold the lens together when damaged.
Description
Light Lenses
The present invention relates to a light lens, particularly but not exclusively for a vehicle.
h
Vehicle light lenses, in particular front light lenses of lorries, are frequently damaged by small stones thrown up from the surface of the road. These may cause tiny holes in the lens through which water can penetrate into the light to cause considerable damage. In extreme cases the lens may shatter, particularly in a collision, completely preventing the light from functioning and also causing a danger from broken glass.
Similarly, rear light lenses, usually made from plastics, may be damaged or destroyed, for example during careless reverse movement of the vehicle.
An object of the present invention is to provide a light lens with resistance to damage by stones, and will not necessarily cause a danger on breakage.
The invention provides a light lens as claimed in claim 1.
The protective layer is preferably scratch resistant.
It may be made from any suitable plastics material and attached to the light lens by any suitable process.
For example, the protective layer may be in the form of a plastics sheet to which adhesive is already applied and which has a peel-off backing. The plastics sheet may be pre-shaped to the particular light lens or may be shaped as desired, e.g. by cutting with scissors or a sharp knife. This would be particularly suitable if the sheet were sold with instructions in D.I.Y. form.
Alternatively, the protective layer may be applied using a separate adhesive or bonding agent.
The protective layer may be applied to the lens using heat treatment, e.g. as a final step during manufacture of the lens. Such a process would be particularly suitable for highly curved lenses, e.g. conical or hemi-spherical rear lenses. Alternatively, the protective layer could be pre-shaped, e.g. conically or hemi-spherically to match the corresponding lens.
The protective layer may be of any suitable thickness to restrict penetration by stones; a thickness of up to 4 mm is envisaged.
The protective layer may be coloured to suit various applications, e.g. yellow for Continental travel.
Not only will such a light lens be resistant to damage, but if it is damaged, the protective layer will hold the broken pieces together and allow further use of the lens for a limited period. If the lens is completely broken, the protective layer will tend to hold the lens pieces together so as to reduce the danger of cuts.
Although the invention has been described only with reference to lorries, it may be used for any other vehicle, e.g. cars and aircraft, or even on plant and machinery.
Claims (7)
1. A light lens having a protective outer layer of transparent material.
2. A light lens as claimed in claim 1, wherein the outer layer is scratch resistant.
3. A light lens as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the outer layer is formed of plastics material.
4. A light lens as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the outer layer is attached to the light lens by means of adhesive.
5. A light lens as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the outer layer is attached to the light lens by means of heat treatment.
6. A light lens as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the outer layer has a thickness of up to 4 mm.
7. A light lens as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the protective layer is coloured.
