Abstract
The instrument is designed and shaped to permit air to be brought to a subject's throat without obstruction, and enable the user to carry out resuscitation (the kiss of life) without oral contact and so reduce the risk of infection. It consists of a tube which has a flattened portion D adapted for entering into a subject's mouth. It has grooves at C for gripping by a subject's teeth or gums. It is serrated underneath on the flat portion where it holds down the tongue. The distal end is tubular and the orifice opens pointing downwards in use. <IMAGE>
Description
ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION INSTRUMENT
The invention reiates to a device or use as an alo in Eettin, air to a Ferson's throat. It is not a method of medical of para-medical treatment in itself.
the purpose of this simple instrument is to enable its user to blow air irto the throat, and subsequertly lungs, of a subject without zctual oral contact with the mouth or face of the subject. This removes the fear and risk of cross infection to the user or resuscitator and subject, the avoidance of vomit from the subject and also adds incentive to carry out first aid.
It can be used for any resuscitation procedure where it is essential to et air into the Ins of the subject quickly.
The instrument can be made in any size and the patent description is worded to cover this. Three sizes re suggested initially for practical purposes:
(1 Adult (Large); (2 Ehild (Hedium) ; (3 Infart (Emall) @imensions and shapes are included below.
The ins@rument (tube can be made of any material which is non-toxic, non-aller@ic, not affected by body secretios and is easily sterilised.
It can be made of disposable material providing it has the previously mentioned projperties.
The instrument is essentially 2 tube of varyIng shape which is large enour.h to distance the user fro the subject's mouth; so shared it it is enarled to fit into the subject's mouth: byholdin@ the faw and sc clamping the subject's teeth or ,rs onto a series of rides, retain If it position; shape; to tertmlt the subject's lips to be held permitting and adequate seal; shared to hold down, and from the throat, the subject'~ tongue thus Keeping the exit nozzle clear of obstructions.
A flexible flange perpendicular to the longitudinal axis can be fitted, if required, t the noint of entry to the subject's mouth; this can improve the air-seal at the subject's mouth. The subject's nose is pinched sirul- taneously to complete the seal.
Referring to the diagrams, the end of the tube used by the resus citator is termed the proximal end (A; the far end at the subject's throat is termed the distal end (H).
Referring to figures 1,2 and 3, A is the position of the mouthpiece used by the resuscitator. There are three circular grooves to enable the user (resuscitator) to grip the instrument in the teeth if necessary.
The tube is cylindrical in shape until position 3 is reached after which it commences to widen in the horizontal plane and narrow in the vertical plane. The maximum widening is reached at F (horizontal plane and minimum narrowing in the same section at C.
At C there are four indentations or grooves laterally i.e. perpendi- cular to the logitudinal axis. These grooves enable to teeth or gums of the subject to maintain the tube in situ, the jaws being held by the used.
The shape from FC to ä enables the instrument to hold down the tongue and thus maintain a clear air passage to the throat of the subject.
The shape alters slightly in sections GD. G shows the horizontal width and @ the vertical flattening. At this point, the ton section at @ is a continuation of the shape with C. i.e. a section of an ellipse.
At base G.D.G (Fig. 6,, the shape becomes slightly concave longitudinally each side, meeting at a shallow longitudinal central spine to conform with the shape of the surface of the tongue. The slight gradient upwards from D towards the distal end is designed to shape with large tongues (Figs 2,5,9 & 11\. Instruments can be made without this gradient and also
with less of an angular shape at the distal end. This is illustrated in section in figure 7.
There are numerous serrations on the base of the tube commencing just before point G & D figs. 1,2,5,7,9 & 11. These are vertical facing forward
the proximal end and slowing facing the distal end.
The distal end 1- (Figs 1,2,5,6,7,9, & 11) curves downwards partly to direct air in the direction of the subjects windripe.

The corresponding cross sections are illustrated in Fig 6, the letters from A to G showing the related sections. All the figures from 1 to 6 illustrate the large (adult size.
The dimenftions are as follows, but these can be modified. length overall A - H, 185 mm.
Internal diameter at A,3 and H, lOmm.
Distance from A to 3 70mm
Distance of 3 to OF 32 mm
Distance from CF to H 85 mm
Internal width at v 20 mm
Internal depth at C 5 mm
These dimensions can be varied.
The medium (child) size shown in cross section Figs. 8 & 9 are the same length as the large from A to B i.e. 70mm, but the internal diameter is reduced to 8mm.
The distance from B to CF 32 mm, but reduced in area laterally: F-F measures 16mm; G-G measures 4mm.

A to H is 162 mm. These dimensions may be varied.
The smallest (infant size, shown in cross-section Figs. 19 & 11 are as follows: to 70mm, jt the internal diameter is reduced to 6mm
Length R to C is 2C mm
Length C to H is 35mm fthe width .- is 12 mm
The vertIcal depth C-C is 3 mm C-G and D-D correspond in dimensions with F-F and C-C respectively.
These dimensions may be varied.
lith all the tubes, the area laterally remains the same despite the changes in shape, to permit a constant flow of air throughout the length.
However the distal end can be altered in diameter to permit a different rate of low; narrowing the distal end with increase the rate and widening will decrease the rate.
