Abstract
An insulated standing seam roof assembly 1 comprises an outer skin 2 having at least one standing seam 20 and an inner skin 3 of corrugated or castellated sheet material. An insulation layer 4 is constituted by substantially incompressible preformed insulation material and is adapted to be installed between the inner and outer skins 2 and 3 of the roof assembly and shaped so that, when so installed, at least one rib 20 on one face of the insulation material fits into a standing seam 10 of the outer skin 2 and troughs 15 and crests 16 on the other face of the insulation material engage crests 17 and troughs 18 of the corrugations or castellation of the inner skin 3. The insulation layer is simple to install and its thermal efficiency cannot be seriously affected during installation by compression of parts of the layer. A method of constructing the roof assembly is also disclosed, which comprises the steps of laying the insulation layer 4 then the outer skin 2 on the inner skin 3. <IMAGE>

assemblies"
This invention relates to standing seam roof assemblies an is rore particularly concerned with an insulation layer for 2 s standing seam roof assembly.
Many medern industrial buildings have metal rocs of very low slope. In order to cope with the problems of thermal expansion and contraction of the metal of such roofs and the tendency o such roofs to leak if joints between panels are not rendered completely watertigtht, standing seam roof assemblies have been developed in which adjacent sides of panels are lapped together to form standing seams incorporating beads of sealant which provide reliable watertightness whilst allowing for thermal contraction and extansion. As an example of such â standing seam roof assembly, reference may be made to the arrangemenet disclosed in European
Patent Specification No. 0,105,015.
In many applications it is reqiured insulate a building provided with such a standing seam roof assembly. Conventionally this is done by providing an inner lining to the roof assembly and incorporating insulating material, such as fibreglass matting or polyurethane foam, between the outer skin and the lining which are spaced apart by galvanised steel zeds.
However various problems are encountered with such an arrangement. For example it can be difficult to ensure that the insulating material completely fills the void thereby preventing passive ventilation which can lead to condensation,and in addition the thermal integrity of the insulation is prejudiced by the need for the steel zeds.
It is an object of the invention to provide an improved insulation layer for a standing seam roof assembly.
According to the present invention there is provided an insulation layer for a standing seam roof assembly comprising an outer skin having at least one standing seam and an inner skin of corrugated or castellated sheet material, wherein the insulation layer is constituted by substantially incompressible preformed insulation material adapted to be installed between the inner and outer skins of the roof assembly and skaped so that, when so installed, at least one rib on one face of the insulation material into a standing seam of the outer skin and troughs and crests on the other face of the insulation material engage crests and troughs of the corrugations or castellation of the inner skin.
Such an insulation layer is simple to install, and its thermal efficiency cannot be seriously affected during installation by compression of parts of the layer.
In a preferred embodiment the insulation layer comprises at least one sheet of insulation material having opposite edges and at least one strip of insulation material for overlying the joint between abutting edges of two such sheets installed edge-to- ears. Preferably each of the opposite edges ras a recess there along and the strip is shaped so as to engage within the recesses along the abutting edges of to such sheets installed edge-to-edge. In this manner any cold bridging effect caused by any minute gaps as the joints between sheets of insulation material is avoided.
Conveniently the strip of insulation material is formed with the rib for fitting into a standing seam of the outer skin. This enables the rib to be separately formed from the sheet of insulation material, thus slmplifying production.
Tn addition it is convenient for the strip Or insulation material to be formed with parallel recessed edges defining therebetween a bottom part shaped to engage within the recesses along the abutting edges o two sheets installed edge-to-edge. In this way interlocking is provided between the strip and the sheets.
Furthermore the insulation layer will generally include a substantially greater number of troughs and crests as compared with the number of rib, and sill typically incorporate four or five troughs arc crests for each rib.
The invention also provides a method of roofing a building, comprising attaching an inner skin cf corrugated or castellated sheet material to underlying purlins or sheeting rails, placing a preformed layer of substantially incompressible insulation material on top of the inner skin so that throughs and crests on the lower face of the insulation material engage crests and troughs of the corrugations or castellations of the inner skin, and attaching an outer skin, formed from sheets which are joined along at least one standing seam, to spacers extending upwardly from the inner skin through the insulation layer so that at least one rib on the upper face of the insulation material
fits into a standing seam of the outer skin.
In oroer trat the invention may be more fully understood, a preferred form of insulation layer in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a section through a standing seam roof assembly incorporating the insulation layer;
Figure z is a perspective vie of the assembly with various parts cut away to show successive layers; and
Figure 3 is a view similar to that of Figure 2, but broken away to show a sliding clip.
Preferring to Figure 1 a standing seam roof assembly 1 comprises an outer skin 2 of sheet material, an inner skin 3 of castellated sheet material and an interposed layer 4 of insulation material. The inner and outer skins 2 and 3 are preferably sheets of plain or coated mental, whereas the insulation layer 4 may be composed of rigid or semi-rigid polyurethane, isocyanurate or polystyrene foam, or evenn shaped mineral miore or particle boards or slabs.
The outer skin 2 is made up of flat sheets 5 formed along one longitudinal edge with a shaped side flange E and along the other longitudinal edge It a same id flange 7. The side flange 6 is foirmed with an upstanding male portion 8 and the side flange 7 is formed with an upstanding female portion 9, the male portion 8 along an edge of one sheet engaging within 2 female portion 9 along an adjacent edge of another sheet so as to join the edges together and thereby worm a standing seam 10. The male portion 8 fits within the female portion 9 with a snap action caused by engagement of a turned-over part 11 of the male portion 8 with a turned-in part 12 of the @ female portion 9.
Furthermore a factory installed bead 13 of mastic sealant within the female portion 9 serves to ensure watertight sealing of the two edges.
The insulation layer 4 comprises preformed sheets 14 of substantially incompressible insulation material incorporating troughs 15 and crests 16 in their lower surfaces which engage crests 17 and troughs 18 respectively of the castellated inner skin 3.
The sheets 14 have abutting longitudinal edges disposed beneath a standing seam 10, each of the abutting edges having 2 recess 19 Therealong. A strip 20 of preformed insulation material,which is the same as or compatible with the material of the sheets 14, engages within the recesses 1c along the abutting erres and overlies the joint between adjacent sheets iL to maintain thermal efficiency at the joint. rne strip 20 is shaped so as to or a rib which fits irto the standing seam 10 of the cute skin 2 and includes lower recessed edges 21 defining therebetween a bottom part 22 shaped to engage within the recesses 19 and to thereby provide interlocking between the strip 20 and the sheets 14 and precise location of the insulation.

L cut away so aE to show the forr.s of the inner and outer skins 2 and 3 and the insulation layer 4 more clearly.In installing the assembly 1 the inner skin 3 is first fixed to purline or sheeting rails and ne insulation sheets 14 are then simply dropped into position. be insulation strips 20 are then engaged within the recesses 19 along the abutting edges of the insulation sheets 14, and the outer skin 2 is then installed in a manner which will be described in more detail below with reference to Figure 3. A flashing 24 formed by bending a sheet of the same material as the outer skin 2 is scalloped to close off the end of the standing seam 10.
As will be appreciated more readily by referring to Figure 3, the outer skin 2 is installed by means of concealed sliding clips 25 extending between the inner and outer skins 3 and 2 at the location of each purlin. Each sliding clip 25 is located in position after installation of the insulation sheets 14 using the races 22 in te edge of one o the sheets 14 as a guide.The clip 25 is then secured in position by a composite support fixing 27 which extends through the insulation sheet 14 into the inner skin ,, the fixing 27 being secured in a single operation which locks an upper thread on the fixing 27 into the clip 25 itself and which at the same time locks a lower thread on the fixing 27 into the inner skin 3 and the underlying purlin. Appropriate lengths of the insulation strips 20 are installed to completely fill the spaces within the standing seam 10 between adjacent sliding clips 25.
Each sliding clip 25 more particularly comprises a generally L-section part 26 and a resilient part 28 which is clipped over the male portion 8 of the side flange 6 along one of the adjacent edges of the sheets 5 making up the outer skin 2. In this manner the male portion 8 is held between an upper surface of the bracket 26 and the upper portion of the part 28 in such a manner as to allow differential longitudinal thermal expansion and contraction to be taken up by sliding between the adjacent edges of the sheets 5.The upper part of the clip 28 is accommodated within the female portion 9 along with the male portion 8 so that no part of the clip 28 is visible when the complete roof assembly has been installed.
Finally it should be mentioned that the provision of an insulation layer in accordance with the invention ensures the additional advantages of spacing he inner an outer skins apart so that the use cf galvanised steel beds is unnecessary, and of allowing
teral restraint to be built into the roof structure.
Most known standing seam floating roof systems do not allow lateral restraint of the total structure.
Claims (10)
1. An insulation layer for a standing seam roof assembly comprising an outer skin having at least one standing seam and an inner skin of corrugated or castellated sheet material, wherein the insulation layer is constituted by substantially incompressible preformed insulation material adapted to be installed between the inner and outer skins of the roof assembly and shaped so that, when so installed, at least one rib on one face of the insulation material fits into a standing seam of the outer skin and troughs and crests on the other face of the insulation material engage crests and troughs of the corrugations or castellations of the inner skin.
2. An insulation layer according to claim 1, which comprises at least one sheet of insulation material having opposite edges and at least one strip of insulation material for overlying the joint between abutting edges of two such sheets installed edge-to-edge.
3. An insulation layer according to claim 2, wherein each of the opposite edges has a recess therealong and the or each strip is shaped so as to engage within the recesses along the abutting edges of two sheets installed edge-to-edge.
4. An insulation layer according to claim 2 or 3, wherein the or each strip is formed with the rib for fitting into a standing seam of the outer skin.
5. An insulation layer according to claim 3 or claim 4 when appended to claim 3, wherein the or each strip is formed with parallel recessed edges defining therebetween a bottom part shaped to engage within the recesses along the abutting edges of two sheets installed edge-to-edge.
6. An insulation layer according to any preceding claim, which includes a substantially greater number of troughs and crests as compared with the number of ribs.
7. An insulation layer according to claim 6, which includes four or five troughs and crests for each rib.
8. A method of roofing a building, comprising attaching an inner skin of corrugated or castellated sheet material to underlying purlins or sheeting rails, placing a preformed layer of substantially incompressible insulation material on top of the inner skin so that troughs and crests on the lower face of the insulation material engage crests and troughs of the corrugations or castellations of the inner skin, and attaching an outer skin, formed from sheets which are joined along at least one standing seam, to spacers extending upwardly from the inner skin through the insulation layer so that at least one rib on the upper face of the insulation material fits into a standing seam of the outer skin.
9. An insulation layer substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
10. A method of roofing a building substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
