A mining machine 1 includes a cutter carrying body 2 provided with a control cabin 20 capable of incorporating an operative 22. <IMAGE>
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO MINING MACHINES
This invention concerns improvements in or relating to mining machines and in particular to such machines used for reciprocal travel along a mineral face, e.g. a coal face, for the purpose of cutting the mineral therefrom.
In the United Kingdom coal mining industry, increasing efforts are being made to the improvement of efficiency which brings a concomitant reduction in production costs yielding a more competitive fuel price. Pivotal to the achievement of this objective is safe and reliable equipment operating within a safe working environment.
The manner of machine utilisation on the mineral face is of considerable import since the rate of extraction by the machine, and its availability, are vital factors in securing enhanced eficiency. The speed of travel, therefore, of the mining machine along the mineral face in its extraction mode is significant in this context as indeed is the method of its control.
Conventionally, the control of the machine is essentially effected manually by an operative who progresses along the face by the side of the machine actuating the control mechanisms as required. This activity has become increasingly difficult especially due to the higher machine speed.
An object of the invention is therefore to provide a mining machine for operation on a mineral face having an improved facility for controlling its movement therealong.
According to the invention a mining machine for operation on a mineral face includes a machine body carrying at least one cutter head, and a control cabin attached or attachable to the machine body in use on the side thereof remote from the mineral face, the cabin being capable of accommodating an operative.
In operation, the mining machine is adapted to run along and is guided by an armoured flexible conveyor provided for the transport of mineral coal from the face by the cutter head, the conveyor having a face side and a goaf side. The control cabin is conveniently attached to the machine body such that it is carried thereby on the goaf side of the conveyor in close adjacency.
thereto and forward of the front legs of mine roof supports arrayed along the face.
The control cabin is provided with at least one control for operating the mining machine remotely therefrom, and may have an automatic trip arrangement actuable upon contact with an obstruction.
By way of example only, one embodiment of mining machine according to the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a schematic representation of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, a mineral mining machine is shown at 1 and is a double-ended trepanner having a machine body 2 carrying at each end thereof a trepanning cutter head 4 and along its length floor and roof cutters, only the latter of which being shown at 6.
The machine body 2 is floor mounted on the face side of an armoured flexible conveyor 8 which serves to guide the machine 1 and which is provided with a rack 10 engaged by a drive mechanism 12 on the machine.
A bridge 14 extending partly over the conveyor 8 encloses the controls (not shown) for the machine 1 which can be operated manually. The bridge 14 carries a cantilever arm 16 provided with an articulated mounting 18 for a control cabin 20 which depends therefrom on the goaf side of the conveyor 8. The cabin 20 is in the form of a sled capable of accommodating a mining operative 22 and incorporates a control handle 24 of the 'dead man's handle' type linked to the controls of the bridge 14. At the forward part of the cabin 20 is a lamp 26 and also a safety trip 28 which upon impact with an obstruction, will stop travel of the machine 1.
In use, the operative 22, occupying the cabin 20, has complete and immediate control of the machine 1 since he is carried by it rather than having to keep in step with it as the machine traverses the face at what are becoming higher cuttings speeds.
As will readily be appreciated, the employment of the present invention is possible in those mining installations where there is adequate clearance for the passage of the cabin. In particular, although not exclusively, the invention can most advantageously be used on coal faces designed on the immediate forward support' principle utilising the lemniscate type of supports giving a forward walkway, i.e. one intermediate the supports and the conveyor. It will be understood that the present invention is not confined to floor-mounted machines nor to the specific type of machine examplified.
Claims (6)
1. A mining machine for operation on a mineral face including a
machine body carrying at least one cutter head, and a control
cabin attached or attachable to the machine body in use on the
side thereof remote from the mineral face, the cabin being
capable of accommodating an operative.
2. A mining machine according to claim 1 in which the control
cabin is attached or attachable to the machine through the
agency of an articulated mounting.
3. A mining machine according to claim 1 or 2 in which the
control cabin is provided with at least one control for
operating the mining machine.
4. A mining machine according to any one of the preceding claims
in which a trip bar is carried by the control cabin.
5. A mining machine according to any one of the preceding claims
in which the control cabin is in the form of a sled.
6. A mining machine substantially as hereinbefore described with
reference to the accompanying drawing.
