Abstract
A load bearing member comprising a plastics composite material and/or glass reinforced cement having embedded therein at least one spiral reinforcing strip. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Load bearing member
This invention relates to a load bearing member and is more particularly although not exclusively concerned with a load bearing member which could be used in construction.
A load bearing member according to the present invention comprises a plastics composite material and/or glass reinforced cement having embedded therein at least one spiral reinforcing strip.
The spiral strip is preferably of stainless steel, although any other material may be used.
The spiral strip is preferalby formed from a flat strip of metal which is then twisted so as to form a spiral. The spiral strip or strips may run the whole length of the member or only part of the length. Preferably there are two or more arranged parallel to and spaced apart from one another. To give added support in some circumstances a further strip or strips may be arranged at one or more angles to the strip or strips running along the member.
According to another aspect of the present invention is a method of making a load bearing member as set forth which includes the steps of placing one or more spiral strips of reinforcing material in a mould and subsequently adding the plastics composite material and/or glass reinforced cement and any other required reinforcing material.
The invention may be performed in various ways and one specific embodiment with some modifications will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a spiral strip for use with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a cross-section of the line 11-11 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a somewhat diagrammatic representation of a load bearing member incorporating the spiral strip shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and
Figures 4 and 5 are cross-sections showing alternative arrangements of spiral strips within a load bearing member.
In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the strip is formed from a flat strip of metal by twisting it to obtain the spiral form shown. The strip is preferably of stainless steel and either 304 stainless steel or 316 stainless steel. The strip may be however formed from any other suitable material to give it the necessary strength.
In Fig. 3 a spiral strip as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is incorporated into the centre of a load bearing member, the spiral strip being embedded in the centre.
The strip indicated by the reference numeral 10 in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 may either be used singly or in varying numbers according to the strength and width required. For example Fig.
4 shows three such spiral strips 11, 12 and 13 arranged spaced from one another and running parallel to one another, and Fig. 5 shows an arrangement wth five such strips 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19.
The strips may be embedded throughout the length of the member as shown in these figures, or alternatively may only extend over part of the length of the member. Other strips (not shown) may also be incorporated and arranged at an angle or angles as the strips shown to give added strength in other directions.
The plastics composite material and/or glass reinforced cement may be additionally reinforced with other material, for example glass fibre or high technology plastics material to provide additional stiffness.
The invention is particularly suitable for load bearing members such as lintels as it is compact, lightweight and of high strength.
