Abstract
A motor car door (1) consisting of two stamped-out metal panels (2, 3) welded to each other and forming a rabbet (6) around the periphery of the window opening and which guides the U-shaped edge of two spaced-apart non-parallel panes (7, 8), defined by a continuous spacer (9). Rabbet 6 is reinforced by a metal member 10 covered by low friction- coefficient material. The space between the panes decreases from top to the bottom to reduce wear on the waist seal 18 (see Fig. 6) which is only engaged as the window is closed. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION A -tiush-fitting openable window system
The present invention relates to a flush-fitting openable window system that is particularly (but not exclusively) suitable for a vehicle door.
The standardisation of motor vehicle doors, consisting of two stamped-out panels, one on the outside, one on the inside, secured together by a welding process, particularly around the periphery of the windows, has led to further development of the guidance, sliding and sound insulating means used in movable windows (see for example French Patent No 2 521 497 and Patents of Addition Nos. 2 543 207 and 2 564 047, both in the name of the
Applicants).
The shaping of vehicle bodies so that the air flows over the outer surfaces achieves the least turbulence possible, in order to enhance the drag factor Cx or the coefficient of the vehicle through the atmosphere, has likewise resulted in manufacturers reviewing the window systems used in motor vehicle doors and preferably designing openable windows which are flush with the outside surface of the door.
Such windows are usually referred to as "flush-fitting" or "flush-glass" windows (see
French Patent No 2 543 074 in the name of the Applicants).
It is with these flush-fitting windows that the present invention is concerned.
According to the present invention there is provided a flush-fitting openable window system, particularly suitable for use in a vehicle door, comprising two metal panels secured one to the other and between said movable window can be concealed, a window framing emanating from the said panels or rigid therewith, the said framing defining with the panels an opening intended to be occluded by the said movable window and comprising on the sides of the said opening other than that through which the said window can be moved between the said panels, a rabbet projecting in the direction of the said opening, said window comprising two non-parallel spaced-apart panes, the spacing of the panes decreasing from their base to their upper portion, the panes being spaced apart in the vicinity of their periphery by a continuous spacer which contacts the two facing surfaces and which defines with the contiguous outer portions of the panes a U-shaped profile which can fit over the said rabbet in order to guide and seal the window.
The term "pane" includes not only panels
of glass but also any panel of plastics material which is transparent, translucent or opaque.
One feature of a door including a window of the invention is that the window slides on the
rabbet produced during manufacture of the
door, whereas convential door windows slide in a guide element in order to be housed completely therein when in the closed position. In the present case, the guide element consists of the rabbet which is engaged into the space separating the panes.
In the event of the framing of the window being part of the metal panels used to produce the door, the said panels will be stamped out and welded together, the said rabbet being formed at the level of the framing.
In the event of the framing being provided within a frame which is added and welded to the said panels, the said rabbet will be provided in the said frame at the periphery of the said opening.
In either case, the said rabbet may be continuous or not.
To facilitate sliding of the window, the rabbet will advantageously be covered with a profiled member covered with a material having a low coefficient of friction.
Furthermore, by reason of the use of two non-parallel panes, it will be possible to dispose the outer pane substantially in the extension of the bottom part of the outer panel of the door, matching its curvature and so considerably improving the aerodynamic characteristics of the vehicle.
Finally, an upwards displacement of the window constituted by the two panes, in order to close the window, is refiected in an increase (at the base of the framing) in the distance separating the two panes, that is to say the thickness of the assembly, resulting in increased perpendicular pressure being exerted by the outer pane on the external encircling seal carried by the bodywork which, when the window has finished its travel (position of closure), ensures perfect sealing-tightness of the assembly.
The profiled member with which the rabbet is to be provided preferably comprises, for instance, an aluminium reinforcement although this reinforcement may possibly be of any other metal or alloy. With regard to the material with a low coefficient of friction with which this reinforcement is sheathed, it may consist of any product which is industrially used for the purpose (woven fabric, products based on Teflon (registered trade mark) or other material). Advantageously, the profiled member with which the rabbet is equipped will likewise carry means of ensuring sealingtightness of the window and of the body, of a per se known type, for example lips of flexible and deformable rubber.
Of course, as with double glazing used in buildings, the heat and sound insulation provided by this window will be considerably improved.
Preferably, in order to avoid any acoustic
resonance phenomenon, the two panes consituting the window will be of different thick
nesses, the thicker pane being on the outside.
The material used for the spacing member for spacing the two panes must physically connect the two opposite surfaces. It may be of an elastomeric, plastomeric or vitreous ceramic nature but should preferably be flexible to compensate for any surface faults in the panes or bodywork.
When the windows are closed, therefore, the motor car will constitute a veritable enclosed case on which changes in plane due to the windows will be reduced to the absolute minimum, making it possible to improve the drag factor of the vehicle, i.e. the coefficient of its penetration through the air.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a partial perspective and diagrammatic view of a motor car door provided with the window system according to the invention, with the window being shown in the lowered position,
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic sectional view taken along the line Il-Il indicated in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a view similar to that shown in
Figure 1, with the window in the raised position;
Figure 4 is a diagrammatic sectional view taken along the line IV-IV indicated in Figure 3;
Figure 5 is an enlarged view of the encircled portion of Figure 4;;
Figure 6 is a partial view on an enlarged scale, similar to that shown in Figure 1, with a different type of encircling seal, and
Figure 7 is a view similar to that shown in
Figure 6, with the double glazed window raised.
Of course the drawings are not to scale and the difference in spacing between the two panes between the top and bottom of the window has been greatly exaggerated for the sake of clarity.
In the embodiment shown in the drawings, the motor car door 1 consists of two stamped-out panels 2 and 3 which are secured one to the other by welding.
An opening 4 which is occluded by a movable window designed by general reference 5 is created by cut-outs made in the panels 1 and 2, the panels being stamped out around the periphery of the cut-out and assembled by spot-welding at the top and around the lateral edges of the opening 4 to form a rabbet 6.
The door rabbet 6 constitutes the means of guiding and allowing the sliding movement of the window 5. The window 5 consists of two non-parallel spaced apart panes 7 and 8, the space between which diminishes from the bottom of the window to the top. The panes 7 and 8 are spaced apart at their periphery by a spacing member 9 which contacts the two opposite surfaces of the panes 7, 8 and which, with the contigous outer parts of the panes 7 and 8, defines a recess of U-shaped cross-section which fits over the rabbet 6 in order to slide thereon and occlude in sealingtight fashion the opening 4, by fitting over the full length of this rabbet 6, as can be seen in
Figures 3 and 4.
To ensure a smooth sliding of the window, the rabbet 6 is covered by a profiled member
10 comprising an aluminium reinforcement covered with a rubber or plastics polymer coated with a material 11 which has a high slip coefficient i.e. a low coefficient of friction (woven fabric or the like). The reinforcement
10 has flexible rubber sealing lips 12, 13 which are curved towards the window panes 7, 8 and which in per se known manner constitutes the system for sealing the window.
At the bottom of the framing of the window, an encircling seal 14 is carried by the outer panel 2 of the door. When the window is lowered (Figure 1), this seal 14 is not in contact with the window 5 but, as the window 5 is raised, the distance which separates the panes 7 and 8 at the level of the seal 14 continually increases, which brings firstly the pane 7 into contact with the seal 14 and then induces it to exert increasing pressure at rightangles ito this seal, which ensures perfect sealing-tightness in the position of closure of the window (Figures 3 and 4). As the seal is not exposed to considerable compression except at the end of its travel, the upwards movement of the window is only lightly arrested by the seal 14 and only at that moment in time.
By reason of the fact that the two panes 7, 8 are not parallel, it is possible to dispose the outer pane 7 in such a way that when the window is in the closed position (Figures 3 and 4), the outer pane 7 is disposed substantially as an extension of the outer panel 2 of the door, without any appreciable discontinuity of curvature. Penetration of the vehicle through the air is thus greatly enhanced compared with motor cars equipped with windows of a conventional type.
It will be noted that the panes 7 and 8 differ in thickness, the outer pane 7 being thicker in order to avoid acoustic resonance phenomena.
It is clear that by virtue of the double glazing, the sound insulation achieved will be greatly superior to that of conventional single pane windows and that road and air noise will be amply attenuated, even at high vehicle speed.
It will be obvious that there is a considerable advantage in using as a means of guiding the window 5 the rabbet 6 which is produced -directly when the door is manufactured. Similarly, sealing-tightness of the windows is greatly improved without the addition of any extra sealing means.
Figures 6 and 7 in which the components already described are designated by the same reference numerals to which the index is added, illustrate the possibility, when the double glazed window is in the raised position, of completely concealing from sight an encircling door seal 14'.
In this embodiment of the invention, the seal 14' which is of a per se known type, comprises a rigid U-shaped reinforcement 16', one arm of which is engaged in a groove 17' formed in the top edge of the panel 2' of the door.
The reinforcement 16' carries a seal 17 of elastomeric material and having three arms, one (18a) fixed against the reinforcement 16', an other (18b) against the edge of the outer panel 2', and the last one (18c) bearing against the outer pane 7 of the double- glazed window 5', in both the lowered position (Figure 6) and in the raised position (Figure 7) thereof, where it is gripped between the pane 7' and the top edge of the panel 2' while being completely concealed.
Claims (8)
1. A flush-fitting openable window system, comprising two metal panels secured one to the other and between said movable window can be concealed, a window framing emanating from the said panels or rigid therewith, the said framing defining with the panels an opening intended to be occluded by the said movable window and comprising on the sides of the said opening other than that through which the said window can be moved between the said panels, a rabbet projecting in the direction of the said opening, said window comprising two non-parallel spaced-apart panes, the spacing of the panes decreasing from their base to their upper portion, the panes being spaced apart in the vicinity of their periperhy by a continuous spacer which contacts the two facing surfaces and which defines with the contiguous outer portions of the panes a U-shaped profile which can fit over the said rabbet in order to guide and seal the window.
2. A system as claimed in claim 1, in which the spacer is formed of a flexible material.
3. A system as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, in which the rabbet is covered with a profiled member covered with a material having a low friction coefficient.
4. A system as claimed in claim 3, in which the profiled member is provided with means for sealing the window to a vehicle door.
5. A system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, in which the panes are of different thicknesses.
6. A system as claimed in claim 5, in which the outer pane of the window is thicker than the inner pane.
7. A vehicle door provided with a flushfitting openable window system, as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6.
8. A vehicle door provided with a flushfitting openable window system, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
