219,423. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (New Jersey Zinc Co.). May 8, 1923. Blowpipe. - In an apparatus for forming zinc oxide of particle size zinc contained in a crucible 10 is volatilized by an arc between electrodes 21, 22, and the vapour issues by a pipe 23 surrounded by an air chamber 24 into which air under low pressure is brought by a pipe 25. The air issues at 26 as a blast surrounding the jet of zinc vapour and causes a short cool flame. In a modification, zinc vapour escapes from a crucible 45 through a pipe 62 lined with carborundum 60, 61 and surrounded by an air-chamber 65 having an annular outlet 63. In other modifications compressed air may be directed by a pipe 30, Fig. 3, into the centre of the zinc jet or by opposed jets 33, Fig. 4, on either side of the zinc jet, or by pipes 36, 36', Fig. 5, around the zinc jet at a little distance above the outlet of the zinc, or by a circular jet 38, Fig. 7.
