Description
SPECIFICATION
Display apparatus
This invention relates to display apparatus which is simple and easy to erect and which is versatile in providing means for displaying both goods and literature in a variety of ways, as well as providing storage space.
In a particularembodimentofthe invention to be described display apparatus includes a hollow column which provides storage space. One side of the column incorporates an opening and sheif-supporting means, which are arrangedwithin the column, supportone or more shelves which extend through the opening into the column.
An embodiment illustrating one way of carrying out the invention will now be described, byway of example, with reference to the accompanying draw- ings in which:
Fig 1. Illustrates a perspective view of a display apparatus assembly,
Fig 2. Shows a cutaway perspective view illustrating one way of supporting a shelf and
Fig 3. Shows a perspective view of the lower part of a column.
Referring to the drawings and in particularto Fig 1 there is shown an assemblyofdisplay apparatus which includestwo hollowcolumnsortowers 1 and 2, each column having a respective foot portion3 and 4.
The column 1 has three walls 5,6 and 7 and an opening 8 on one side. Similarly, the column 2 has walls 10 and 12 between which there is awall 11, which is not shown in order to enable the inside of the hollow column 2 to be seen, but which extends between the walls 10 and 12 and from the upper edge 13 ofthefoot portion 4to a cross bar 14. An opening 15 is provided on the remaining side ofthe column 2.
Shelves 16, which are arranged with their ends extending through the openings 9 and 15 in the respective columns 1 and 2, may be arranged at appropriate heights upon supports within the columns in the way illustrated in Fig 2.
In Fig 2 there is shown a cutaway perspective view of a partofthecolumn 1 shown in Fig 1 and itwill be seen thata rail 20 having pegs 21 nearto its ends which are able to enter into holes 22 in posts 23 may be positioned by means of the pegs 21 and holes 22to support a shelf 16 ata required height. Itwill be appreciated that a similar shelf supporting arrangement is provided in column 2.
In a preferred embodiment, the posts 23 are arranged on thewalls 7 and 11 of the columns 1 and 2, thereby reducing the need for such large rebated portions 25 and 26 of the shelves 16.
Referring nowto Fig 3there is shown more clearly the formation ofthe wall 5. In the particularembodiment shown in Fig 3, the wallS is made up of what may be regarded as slatted portions 28 between which there are channels 29 which communicate with grooves 30 and 31 which extend beneath adjacent slatted portions 28. In a variation of the arrangement shown the channel 29 communicates with only one groove 31, and the groove 30 is not incorporated. The channels 29 and the grooves 30 and 31 provide locationsforvarious attachments, for example shelf units, leaflet holders, trays for holding tools and ticket or label holders. At 33 there is shown a ticket holder into which a ticket 34 is able to slide. The ticket holder 33 is passed in the direction of arrow 35 so that its turned over edges enter an adjacent pair of channels 29 and engage in grooves31 and30to locatethe holder 33 in front of a slatted portion 28. At 36 there is shown a tray having an upstanding lip 37 which is able to be passed along a groove 30 so that the tray 36 extends through the associated channel 29 when the tray 36 is passed in the direction of an arrow 38 with a flange portion 39 locating againsttheface of a slatted portion 28. A sloping front portion of the foot 3 carries a card holder 41 into which a card display 42 may be inserted in the direction of arrows 43.
It will be noted that in addition to providing means on thewalls 5 and 10 for supporting articles for display, for example labels, notices and holders for leaflets, the arrangement shown in Fig 1 also has slatted and grooved walls 7 and 12. Similarly, thewalls 6 and 11 (not shown) may be provided with slats and grooves.
In the arrangementsshown in Figs 2 and 3 however onlythewalls6areshown slatted and grooved. Itwill be appreciated that other variations may be made in the way in which the units are assembled and that otherforms of supportfortrays and label holders may be provided.
Similarly otherforms of shelf support arrangement may be employed than that shown in Fig 2.
It will also be appreciated that it is not necessary for both ends of a shelf to be supported within a column. It is possible, for example, for a shelf two extend into a column 1 at one end and for the other end ofthe shelf to be supported on a wall which takes the place of the opening 15 of column 2. In such an arrangementonly one form of column need be manufactured.
In yet another embodiment the forwardly extending foot portions 3 and 4 are omitted and a column may be used either way up so that the opening may be arranged on either side and only one form of column need be made.
Such an arrangement is suitable for positioning adjacentto awall so that the rear walls 7 and 12 may besecured by means ofstrapstothewall.
Itwill be understood that the hollow columns provide storage space either for additional apparatus to be displayed, for space parts or for literature.
Although the invention has been described, by way of example, with reference to pa rticula r em bodi- ments, it will be appreciated thatvariations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be made.
For example, although the columns in the embodiments described have an opening in only one side, it is possible for openings to be provided in two opposite sidesandfortheshelvesto be supported by means attached to the front or back walls of a column, and to

pass rightthrough a column.
Furthermore, the columns may be otherthan square
in cross section and have otherthan four sides. It is
also possible to use the foot portions 3 and 4for
storage by hinging the portion on which the display
holder41 is mounted to form a door.
Itwill also be understood that the columns 1 and 2
need not be in one piece. They may be formed from a stack of units, each perhaps cm. high, which are interconnected by means of pins and sockets.
Furthermore, the shelves 16 may have sliding glass doors in front of them, which can be locked for security.
Claims (4)
