Abstract

A retail garment display hanger is essentially formed by two portions, namely a hook portion 2 and a garment hanging portion 3. The hook portion may be formed of plastics material and include a hook portion integrally moulded therewith; or alternatively it may be formed of plastics material and have a hook proper attached to it. The hook portion is customised. The garment hanging portion is moulded from plastics materials and has a configuration which is generally conventional for a specific garment. The hook portion and the garment hanging portion are adapted to be secured together e.g. by connectors 10, welding or adhesive. By this means garment display hangers can be supplied as a kit of parts for fitting out a particular retail store with hangers for a variety of different garments, in which case the hook portions are associated with the particular retail store and the hanging portions are selected depending upon the particular garment. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Garment hanger This invention relates to garment hangers.
In recent years plastics substitutes for conventional garment hangers have appeared on the market. In part .his has been because of major changes in garment retailing and in part because of the expense in manufacturing and poor design of conventional wooden hangers provided with their conventional bent steel hook.
The retail fashion trade has been characterised in recent years firstly by an emphasis upon a new generation of designers and on so-called "designer fashions" (examples would be JASPER CONRAN and GLORIA VANDER BILT) aiming perhaps at the higher end of the market, and by new specialist chains of retail shops with a strong overall design and fashion sense and aimed at particular segments of the market. Examples would be NEXT, PRIN CIPLES, RICHARDS, TOP MAN and NOW aiming more at specialised sections of the middle market. The long established multiple chain stores such as Marks and Spencer Limited, British Home Stores Limited, Tesco Home n' Wear and C & A Modes which aim at the general public have retaliated by attempting to update their design and fashion image, by redesigning the interior of their stores more along the line of shops-within-shops.To some extent this increased emphasis on individual style of a particular retail store is artificial in the sense that the same garment manufacturer may supply essentially similar goods, bearing different sewn-in labels to shops of different chains.
As a consequence, there is an evident desire to emphasise the trade mark and trade dress for each individual retail chain (and also by the suppliers of the "designer fashions") in every way possible to seek to establish that they are in some way special and different from the other chains. This desire coupled with the general realisation of the unsuitability and relatively high cost of conventional wooden garment hangers has led to a now virtually complete changeover to plastics hangers for the free hanging display of garments in retail stores.
Each retail chain wishes to have its own exclusively designed hanger bearing its trade mark and coloured in its trade dress. Different specialist hangers are required for different garments such as coats, dresses, skirts, trousers and lingerie. Small runs with exclusive designs inevitably carry a substantial tooling cost as an inevitable overhead. To date the proprietors of the various retail chains have been prepared to pay in order to achieve the exclusivity they desire.
As will become clear from the description which follows, we have redesigned the garment hanger so as to be able to supply retailers with the exclusive designs they desire in individual patterns for different types of garments at a significantly reduced cost in which the tooling element forms a substantially lower proportion of the overhead expense.
In accordance with a first aspect of this invention, there is provided a retail garment display hanger essentially formed in two portions, namely a hook portion and a garment hanging portion; the hook portion being formed of plastics material and including a hook proper integrally moulded therewith or being formed of plastics material and having a hook proper attached thereto; the hook portion being customised, either having a configuration and/or colour characteristic of a specific retailer and bearing the said retailer's trade mark, or having a configuration and/or colour characteristic of a supplier of the said hangers and bearing the said suppliers' trade mark; the garment hanging portion being essentially functional in form, being moulded from plastics materials, and taking a configuration which is generally conventional for a specific garment; and the hook portion and the garment hanging portion being adapted for mating engagement.
In the preferred arrangement the hook portion and the garment hanging portion are provided with complementary mating engagement means enabling a hook portion and a garment hanging portion to be interconnected in assembly of said retail garment display hanger by simply pushing a hook portion and a garment hanging portion together so that said engagement means mate. In alternative arrangements the hook portion and the garment hanging portion have engaging surfaces across which the said portions are ultrasonically welded or high-frequency induction welded together. In another alternative arrangement the hook portion and the garment hanging portion have engagement means deformed after offering up of the hook portion and the garment hanging portion to each other thereby preventing ready detachment of the hook portion from the garment hanging portion.
In a second and alternative aspect of this invention, we provide a kit of parts for fitting out a garment retail store with retail garment display hangers for a variety of different garments, the kit comprising: a plurality of hook portions for retail garment display hangers, each said hook portion being formed of plastics material and including a hook proper integrally moulded therewith or being formed of plastics material and having a hook proper attached thereto, the hook portion having a configuration and/or colour characteristic of the said retail store and bearing a trade mark associated with the said retail store; and a plurality of garment hanging portions, the hook portions and the garment hanging portions being adapted for mating engagement, the gar ment hanging portions being moulded of plastics material and being essentially functional in form, and being provided in a number of different configurations adapted respectively for different types of garments such as blouses/shirts, suits, trousers, or skirts.
Where the said kit of parts is supplied by a manufacturer to a retail store group with the hook portion and the garment hanging portion separate for selection of an appropriate garment hanging portion to go with a specific hook portion as desired and as needed at any Particular time, the hook portion and the garment hanging portion are suitably provided with complementary mating engagement means enabling a hook portion and a garment hanging portion to be interconnected in assembly of a retail garment display hanger by simply pushing a hook portion and a garment hanging portion together so that the said engagement means mate, or alternatively are provided with deformable engagement means which, following the offering up of a hook portion to a garment hanging portion are deformable in a manner preventing subsequent ready detachment of the hook portion from the garment hanging portion.
In a third and alternative aspect of this invention, we provide a kit of parts enabling a garment manufacturer or supplier of a garment of a specific type to supply said garment mounted on a retail garment display hanger to a variety of different retail stores each requiring that garments supplied to it be mounted on hangers characteristic of the said store, the kit comprising: a plurality of garment hanging portions for retail garment display hangers, each said garment hanging portion being essentially functional in form, being moulded from plastics materials, and taking a configuration which is generally conventional for the said specific garment; and a plurality of hook portions, the hook portions and the garment hanging portions being adapted for mating engagement; the hook portions being provided in a number of different configurations and/or colours characteristic of said variety of different retailers and each bearing its respective retailer's trade mark, the said hook portions being chosen from hook portions formed of plastics material and including a hook proper integrally moulded therewith or being formed of plastics material and having a hook proper attached thereto. In order to allow the garment manufacturer or supplier to provide customised hangers for mounting the specific garment thereon for supply to a selected store amongst said variety, the respective hook portions and the garment hanging portions are provided with complementary mating engagement means enabling a hook portion and a garment hanging portion to be interconnected as required by simply pushing a hook portion and a garment hanging portion together so that the said engagement means mate. Alternatively, the various hook portions and the garment hanging portions are provided with deformable engagement means adapted to be deformed after offering up a selected hook portion and a garment hanging portion to each other, the deformation preventing subsequent ready detachment of the hook portion from the garment hanging portion.
Finally in a yet further alternative aspect of this invention, we provide a stock or kit of parts enabling a supplier of retail garment display hangers to supply as required either to a garment retail store or to a garment manufacturer or supplier selected retail garment display hangers adapted for a specific garment and customised for a specific retailer, the stock or kit comprising: a plurality of hook portions and a plurality of garment hanging portions adapted for mating engagement to provide respective retail garment display hangers; the hook portions being provided in a number of different customised varieties, respective hook portions either being formed of plastics material and including a hook proper integrally moulded therewith or being formed of plastics material and having a hook proper attached thereto; respective hook portions having a configuration and/or colour characteristic of a specific retailer and bearing the said retailer's trade mark; and the garment hanging portions being moulded of plastics material and being essentially functional in form, and being provided in a number of different configurations adapted respectively for different types of garments such as blouses/shirts, suits, trousers or skirts.
In the preferred arrangement the hook portion and the garment hanging portion are provided with complementary mating engagement means enabling a hook portion and a garment hanging portion to be interconnected in assembly of a specific retailer garment display hanger by simply pushing a chosen hook portion and a chosen garment hanging portion together so that said engagement means mate. In alternative arrangements, the hook portions and the garment hanging portions have engaging surfaces across which the said portions may be ultrasonically welded or highfrequency induction welded together. In another alternative arrangement the hook portions and the garment hanging portions have deformable engagement means adapted to be deformed after offering up a chosen hook portion and a chosen garment hanging portion to each other, the deformation preventing subsequent ready detachment of the hook portion from the garment hanging portion.
The invention is hereinafter more particularly described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 shows a first embodiment of hanger constructed in accordance with the present invention for display of a blouse or shirt, and bearing a hanger suppliers' trade mark; Fig. 2 shows the hanger of Fig. 1 immediately before assembly of the two portions; Figs. 3, 4 and 5 illustrate embodiments of shirt/blouse hanger adapted for use by three different garment retailers; and Figs. 6 to 9 show garment hangers in accordance with the present invention including the same hook portion as the garment hanger of Figs. 1 and 2 but alternative garment hanging portions.
The garment display hanger 1 illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 is formed in two portions, namely a hook portion 2 and a garment hanging portion 3. Hook portion 2 is in the form of a plastics moulding with an integrally moulded hook 4 and a body portion 5 which in this case carries a trade mark 6 identifying a garment display hanger manufacturer. The configuration of the hook portion 2, and in this case particularly the distinctive ribbed region where the hook proper 4 joins the body portion 5 gives the hook portion a customised appearance.
The garment hanging portion 3, on the other hand, has a distinctly functional form, in this case that of a conventional blouse/shirt hanger comprising horizontal centre portion 7 respective shoulder portions 8 terminated in downwardly rounded ends 9, without any cross-bar. The hook portion 2 and the garment hanging portion 3 are provided with complementary mating engagement means, in this case in the form of fishtail connectors 10 on the upside of the centre portion 7 and corresponding apertures (not shown) in the underside 11 of body portion 5 of the hook portion 2. The apertures have a diameter corresponding to the separation between the outer sides of the respective legs 12 of each fishtail connector 10.The connector 10 has sufficient flexibility for the angled surfaces 13 to cam against the confronting edge of the apertures to bend the two legs 12 towards each other sufficiently for the fishtail ends of the connectors to pass through the aperture, whereupon they spring back to their original position, retraction of the fishtail connector through the aperture being prevented by the ledges or shoulders 14.
We have found this particular connection arrangement to be ideal for connecting the two portions of the garment display hanger. The interconnection is sufficiently firm to provide for a robust hanger in repeated use and the interconnection shown has the merit that the fishtail connector and the aperture mate together very readily. In assembling the garment display hanger, the hook portion and the garment hanging portion need merely to be presented to each other and pushed together for the engagement means to mate. The converse arrangement, in which the hook portion had the fishtail connectors and the garment hanging portion had the aperture would be feasible but more expensive to produce. No doubt persons skilled in this art will appreciate very many alternative complementary mating engagement means which could be used. The invention is not limited to any particular such means.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 show how the different hook portions 15, 16 and 17 respectively may be attached to the same garment hanging portion 3, namely the blouse/shirt hanger of Figs.
1 and 2. Each of the hook portions is customised in the sense that it has a configuration and colour (here shown by shade) characteristic of the specific retailer whose trade mark 18, 19, 20 respectively, is depicted on the body portion of the respective hook portion 15, 16, 17. As before, the hook portion is formed of plastics material in each of these embodiments; it will be noted that in this case, as compared with the case of Figs. 1 and 2, the hook proper 21, 22, 23 respectively, is formed of steel wire stock bent to the appropriate shape and attached to the plastics material of the body portion of the respective hook portions 15, 16, 17 suitably by the body portion being moulded with the hook portion in situ.It will be appreciated that the under surface of the body portions of the respective hook portions 15, 16 and 1 7 have suitable openings or recesses to receive the fishtail connectors 10 of the garment hanging portion 3.
The customising can be carried a stage further as shown in Fig. 5 where the hook portion 17 includes a main body portion 17 and a secondary body portion 24 which stands proud of the main body portion enabling a price ticket or card 25 which may carry a description of the goods, care instructions etc.
to be held between the secondary body portion 24 and the remainder of the hanger. For this purpose, the secondary body portion may in effect form a clip, being hinged to the main body portion and spring biased into a closed position.
The remaining figures 6 to 9 show how any one of the hook portions (here the hook portion 2 of Figs. 1 and 2) may be combined with various other garment hanging portions 26 to 29 for various purposes. The garment hanging portions are each moulded of plastics material and are essentially functional in form.
Each takes a configuration which is generally conventional for a specific garment. It should be understood, though it is not shown in these Figures, that each of the illustrated garment display portions 26 to 29 will have fishtail connectors in an exactly similar fashion to the garment display portion 3 of Figs. 1 and 2.
Thus, it will be seen that the hanger of Fig.
6 is suitable for use as a suit hanger, its garment display portion 26 having sloped shoulder portions 30 which slope at a greater angle than the shoulder portions 8 of the blouse/shirt hanger of Figs. 1 and 2. These shoulder portions are also of relatively wider dimension and have enlarged downwardly turned end portions 31 to ensure a good drape for the sleeve of the suit. A cross-bar 32 is provided for trousers or skirt to accompany the suit jacket.
The hanger of Fig. 7 is suitable for displaying trousers having a horizontal cross-bar 33 over which the trousers are hung and two short bar portions below the main cross-bar conventional in trouser display hangers for looping an unseen portion of the trouser leg between the main cross-bar and the short bars to prevent the trousers from slipping off the hanger on display.
Fig. 8 illustrates a skirt hanger, garment display portion 28 comprising a central horizontal portion 36 with respective telescoping legs 37 at its opposite ends biased outwardly of the central portion 36 and having downwardly turned fingers 38 adapted to extend inside the waistband. Hangers of this kind are suitably made in different sizes for different waist sizes and the size may be indicated as at 39.
Finally Fig. 9 illustrates a so-called "clip hanger" which may be used for displaying either skirts or trousers, or other items such as swimwear. Garment hanging portion 29 comprises a horizontal bar 40 with a pair of clips 41 mounted at its ends; these clips, which are of conventional construction, may be formed of metal or of plastics and operate by a toggle action. They are conventionally provided with integrally moulded gripping portions as shown at 42.
Although the specific garment hanging portions of Figs. 6 to 9 are all illustrated in use with a common hook portion which happens to be a hook portion bearing the trade mark of a garment hanger supplier, it will readily be appreciated that by means of the present invention, an entire retail shop selling fashion garments of various kinds can be fitted out with common hangers which have a hook portion which is the same and may for exampie be one of the hook portions shown in Figs. 3, 4 or 5, depending upon the retailer, teamed with an appropriate garment hanging portion for the particular garment being displayed.
From the garment hanger suppliers' point of view, the present invention provides substantial potential savings in cost for he may now offer to potential customers in the retail fashion trade a range of customised or exclusive hangers for that customer with the additional expense involved only in the production of the relatively small hook portion, as compared with the expense heretofore of having to provide moulds for each individual type of hanger.
From the retail fashion store position, the invention may equally provide substantial savings, if the fashion store proprietor is enabled to purchase, as a kit, a supply of his customised exclusive hook portions and a supply of garment display portions which can be assembled as needed to provide whichever type of garment display hanger is needed at the time.
A garment manufacturer or supplier supplying the same type of garment, such as trousers, to a variety of different stores is enabled to supply the garment already mounted on hangers customised for the respective retailer by purchasing, as a kit, a supply of specific garment display portions applicable to the garment concerned and a variety of different customised hook portions applicable for the various retailer customers for the garment. A selected hook portion can be assembled with the common garment display portion as needed to provide whichever garment display hanger is needed at the time.
Although the specific embodiments of garment display hanger illustrated in the accompanying drawings are all provided with complementary mating engagement means, it will be readily appreciated that other arrangements are feasible. Specifically, in place of complementary mating engagement means, the hangers may employ deformable engagement means adapted after offering up a respective hook portion and a respective garment hanging portion together to be deformed thereby preventing subsequent ready detachment of the hook portion from the garment hanging portion.
The techniques of ultrasonic welding of plastics parts together and of high-frequency induction welding of plastics parts together are well understood. Such techniques are readily applicable to the coupling of a hook portion to a garment hanging portion to provide a complete retail garment display hanger in accordance with the present invention, given only that the hook portion and the garment hanging portion should have engaging surfaces adapted for application of these techniques. Since these techniques are well understood, and since the parameters necessary for successful welding can readily be established by trial and error in the light of common general knowledge of these techniques, it is thought that no further explanation, description or illustration is necessary.
Finally, and the least preferred of all the techniques for forming complete retail garment display hangers in accordance with the present invention, the two parts may be connected by adhesive.
