Abstract

The length of cable or other flexible elongate member wound around or supported on a reel of a partly-used package is determined by weighing the reel with cable thereon and, having regard to the weight per unit length of the cable, calculating or otherwise ascertaining the length of cable on the reel. Preferably, the length of cable is ascertained from a graph in which the weight of reel with cable on it is drawn against the cable length or from a comparative table of weights of reel with cable thereon and of corresponding cable lengths. The graph or comparative table preferably is printed on the reel flange or on a separately formed label for attachment to the reel flange or carton. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Packaging of cable and other flexible elongate members This invention relates to the packaging of electric cable, wire ropes, metal tubes, plastics hose and other flexible elongate members and is especially, but not exclusively concerned with the packaging of bare or insulated electric wire or cable, for example wire or cable of the kinds used in the wiring systems of buildings. For convenience, all such flexible elongate members will hereinafter be included in the genericterm "flexible elongate member".
One form of package for electric cable which is in common use in a reel, spool or drum -all hereinafter includedintheterm "reel" - on which a cable is wound and which, in some cases, may be supplied in a protective carton or other protective covering. In anotherform of package for electric cable, the cable is in coil form and is housed in a carton which can be readily converted into a reel; an example of such a package is described and claimed in the specification of our British Patent No: 2132987B. Athirdform of package for electric cable comprises a carton in which is removably housed a reel on which a cable in coil form is supported; an exampleofthisthirdform of package is described in the specification of our British Patent No: 2162496B.
All these forms of package for electric cable have the common problem that, after some of the cable of the package has been withdrawn from the reel, it is difficult to determine accurately the length of cable remaining in the package. Where a package, after some cable has been withdrawn from the reel, is returned to store by a contractor or other user, it would be convenient if the storeman could readily determinethelength of cable remaining inthe package. It would also be convenientto a contractor or other user, when needing a predetermined length of cable, if he could readily determine whether or not a partly-used package carries or contains a sufficient length of cable for his purpose.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved method of determining the length of flexible elongate memberwound around or supported on a reel of a partly-used package.
According to the invention, the improved method comprises removing the reel from the package, weighing the reel with the flexible elongate member wound around or supported on it and, having regard to the weight per unit length ofthe flexible elongate member, calculating or otherwise ascertaining the length of flexible elongate memberwound around or supported on the reel.
Preferably, afterweighing the reel with the flexible elongate memberwound around or supported on it, the length offlexible elongate member is ascertainedfromagraph inwhichtheweightofreel with the flexible elongate memberwound therearound or supported thereon is drawn against length offlexible elongate member, from comparative tables of weights of reel with a flexible elongate element wound therearound or supported thereon and of corresponding lengths offlexible elongate member, or from other means by which the length offlexible elongate member, carried by or associated with the reel, can be determined having regard to the weight per unit length oftheflexible elongate member.
Accordingly, the invention also includes an improved package comprising a reel around which a length offlexible elongate member is wound or on which a coil of flexible elongate member is supported and, carried by or associated with the reel, means by which the length offlexible elongate member wound around or supported on the reel can be readily determined having regard to the weight per unit length of the flexible elongate member.
Preferably, the length determining means comprises a graph in which the weight of reel with the flexible elongate memberwound therearound or supported thereon is drawn against length offlexible elongate member or comparative tables of weights of reel with a flexible elongate member wound therearound orsupportedthereon and of corresponding lengths offlexible elongate member.
The graph, comparative tables or other length determining means preferably is or are printed on the outer surface of one flange of the reel or, where the reel is housed in a carton, on the outer surface of the carton; alternatively, the graph, comparative tables orotherlength determining means may be printed on a separately formed label which is stuck on one of the reel flanges or, when present, on the carton.
Where the weight of the reel itself is substantial having regard to the weight per unit length of the flexible elongate memberwound therearound or supported thereon, preferably the graph or comparative tables compensate for the weight of the reel when empty. However, where the weight ofthe reel, when empty, is less than the weight of approximately one metre of the flexible elongate member, generallytheweightofthereel can be ignored.
The invention is further illustrated bya description, byway of example, of the preferred method of determining the length of electric cable supported on the reel of a partly used package as described and claimed in British Patent No: 21 62496B, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a fragmental side view of one flange ofthe reel ofthe package.
Referring to the drawing, one flange 1 of the reel flange carries on its outer face a graph 2 in which the weight of reel with electric cable supported thereon is drawn against cable length. When a storeman, contractor or other user wishes to know the length of electric cable remaining in a partly used package, he removes the reel from the package, weighs the reel and determines readilyfrom the graph 2 on the reel flange 1 the length of cable left on the reel.
1. A method of determining the length offlexible elongate memberwound around or supported on a reel of a partly-used package, which method comprises removing the reel from the package,
