Abstract
A retro reflective road/pavement marking stud has a body 1 containing a recess or recesses 2 into which the retro reflective component 3 locates. When located, the retro reflective exposed surface is still recessed within the surrounding stud body. When trafficked by a vehicular tyre the contact is restricted substantially to the stud body and not the recess or retro reflective component contained therein. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Reflective road/pavement marking stud
This invention relates to a reflective road/pavement marking stud.
The use of reflective road/pavement marking studs is a well known method for directing and delineating all types of movement of traffic primarily during the hours of darkness. The stud body is either fixed into orattached onto the road/pavement surface, and within the body is the retro reflective component facing the flow of traffic. This face can be either vertical or up to 60 degrees from the vertical depending on the direction of the approaching traffic. The stud will have either UNI, BI, or multi directional retro reflective faces. In all cases the retro reflective component reflects some light back to the observer, providing the observer is behind or very near to the light source. The retro reflective component is normally either BI convex lens or corner cube type.Due to the location on the road/pavement, reflective road/pavement studs are over run by traffic, and as a consequence subject to damage and abrasion. A resultant effect of this is a reduction in the photometric performance ofthe retro reflective component thereby lowering safety standards in hazardous situations.
According to the present invention, there is provided on the body of the reflective road/pavement marking stud a recess to locate the retro reflective component. The recess and thickness of the retro reflective component are gauged to ensure that the exposed surface of the retro reflective component when fixed into the recess is lower than the surrounding body area.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:- Figure 1 shows in perspective the road/pavement marking stud body; on the highway Figure 2 shows the body recess into which is located the retro reflective material;
Figure 3 shows the retro reflective component; Figure 4 shows the retro reflective component fixed into the stud
Figure 5shows a cross section ofthe stud body illustrating the recessed position ofthe retro reflective component.
Figure 6shows the action of a vehicle tyre over running the reflective road/pavement marking stud.
The stud is shown in cross section and the tyre is deformed at point of impact.
Referring to the drawings 1,2 & theretro reflective road/pavement marking stud is made up from the body containing the recess and the retro reflective component. Figure 4 shows the retro reflective stud complete. Figure 5 shows a cross section of the body detailing the sub flush position of the retro reflective component when fixed into the body. Figure 6 shows the action of a vehicle tyre over running the stud, and because ofthe recessed nature of the retro reflective component, the tyre only coming into full contactwith the surrounding stud body, thereby reducing substantially the abrasive action on the retro reflective component.
1. A retro reflective road/pavement marking stud containing a recessforthe retro reflective component which when fixed intothestud body is sub flush with the surrounding body.
2. A retro reflective road/pavement marking stud as claimed in claim 1 wheretheangleoftheface containing the retro reflective component is between 1'and 45'from the vertical.
3. A retro reflective road/pavement marking stud where the retro reflective component is either enclosed/encapsulated bead, corner cube or individual biconvex lens type, the stud as claimed in claim 1.
4. A retro reflective road/pavement marking stud as claimed in claim 1 where the retro reflective component is fixed bya pressure sensitive, contact or heat activated adhesive.
5. A retro reflective road/pavement marking stud as claimed in claim 1 where the retro reflective component is moulded into the body either directly or by means of an insert.
6. A retro reflective road/pavement marking stud as claimed in claim one where the stud is either uni-duo or multi retro reflective directional.
7. A retro reflective road/pavement marking stud as in claims 1 - 6 where the body is either plastic, composite, metal, natural or synthetic rubber.
8. A retro reflective road/pavement marking stud substantially as described in claims 1 - 7 fixed either onto or into the road surface.
