Abstract

A fishing rod rest includes structure 20 including upwardly facing recesses 21 for receiving sections of a pole and has opposed nipples 24 receiving ends of flexible tubes 25, 26 whose inner ends 25a, 26a are received on elements 14 of a plastics coupling 10 firmly to hold the tubes in spaced relation to define a smooth surfaced line drop recess 27 for receiving a fishing line 28 of a rod or pole 29 placed on the rest. Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to fishing rod rests This invention relates to fishing rod rests, and couplings. The term fishing rod includes fishing poles and also includes a section of a rod or pole.

According to the invention a rest for a fishing rod comprises a structure providing opposed members for engaging an end of a respective flexible tube, the inner ends of the tubes being connected to a substantially rigid coupling to define a gap between inner end regions of the tubes to provide a line drop recess.

The coupling may comprise a base, and two spaced elongate elements extending to one side of the base and each defining with the base an annular recess for receipt of one end of a respective flexible tube with end regions of the tube spaced to define a gap therebetween to form said recess.

The elements may be parallel and may taper inwardly as they extend away from the base.

The structure may have one or more recesses upwardly facing in use for receipt of a rod.

The structure may include means for connection to a bank stick.

The invention provides a coupling for connecting two flexible tubes comprising a base, and two spaced elongate elements extending to one side of the base and each defining with the base an annular recess for receipt of one end of a respective flexible tube with end regions of the tubes spaced to define a gap therebetween to form said recess.

The invention may be performed in various ways and one specific embodiment with possible modifications will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. lisa side elevation of a coupling; Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an underneath plan view of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section on the line A-A of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a side view of part of a rest for a fishing rod or pole showing use of the coupling with part also shown enlarged.

A coupling 10 is moulded of plastics and has a base 11 with underneath central strengthening rib 12. The base 11 has an upstanding wall 12 defining two circular recesses 13 and centrally in each recess is a circular-section upstanding element 14 which tapers inwardly as it extends upwards to a generally flat top surface 15.

The elements 14 preferably as shown have parallel axes and define generally annular recesses 16 with the wall 12 and the floor 17 of the recesses 13.

The coupling 10 is primarily for use as part of a rest for a fishing rod or pole. Thus as seen in Fig. 5 a generally planar support or bracket 20 moulded of plastics has upwardly facing recesses 21 for receipt for example of lengths of a fishing pole, the recesses having varying cross-sections, and downward threaded bosses 22 for selective connection to one or more bank sticks (not shown) or other element for holding the support 20 above the ground. The bracket has laterally and, in use, upwardly extending members 23 each of which has an inwardly and slightly downwardly inclined nipple 24. These opposed nipples respectively detachably receive and grip one end of respective flexible rubber tubes 25,26.The inner ends 25a, 26a of the tubes extend over and grip the elements 14 and the free ends of the tubes are respectively received in and preferably substantially fill the recesses 16.

There is thus defined by the coupling and tubes an upwardly extending recess or line drop 27 between the ends 25a, 26a which can receive a fishing line 28, extending through eyes carried by a rod or pole 29, when the rod or pole is placed on the rest. The tubes may extend in a curved manner, concave upwards.

It will be seen that the upper end of the recess 27 is wider than the lower end. Also the recess has smooth sides and has no edges undesirably to catch the line 28. Also, the elements 14 are substantially not flexible so that the line drop region 27 is substantially unchanging in shape and not subject to distortion if the tubes 25,26 are moved during use e.g. by placing the rod on the rest.

1. A rest for a fishing rod comprising a structure providing opposed members for engaging an end of a respective flexible tube, the inner ends of the tubes being connected to a substantially rigid coupling to define a gap between inner end regions of the tubes to provide a line drop recess.

A rest as claimed in claim 1, in which the coupling comprises a base, and two spaced elongate elements extending to one side of the base and each defining with the base an annular recess for receipt of one end of a respective flexible tube with end regions of the tubes spaced to define a gap therebetween to form said recess.

3. A rest as claimed in claim 2, in which the elements are parallel.

4. A rest as claimed in claim 2 or 3, in which the elements taper inwardly as they extend away from the base.

5. A rest as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the structure has one or more recesses upwardly facing in use for receipt of a rnd 6. A rest as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the structure includes means for connection to a bank stick.

7. A rest for a fishing rod substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in Fig. 5 of the accompanying drawings.

The term fishing rod includes fishing poles and also includes a section of a rod or pole. According to the invention a rest for a fishing rod comprises a structure providing opposed members for engaging an end of a respective flexible tube, the inner ends of the tubes being connected to a substantially rigid coupling to define a gap between inner end regions of the tubes to provide a line drop recess. The coupling may comprise a base, and two spaced elongate elements extending to one side of the base and each defining with the base an annular recess for receipt of one end of a respective flexible tube with end regions of the tube spaced to define a gap therebetween to form said recess. The elements may be parallel and may taper inwardly as they extend away from the base. The structure may have one or more recesses upwardly facing in use for receipt of a rod. The structure may include means for connection to a bank stick. There is thus defined by the coupling and tubes an upwardly extending recess or line drop 27 between the ends 25a, 26a which can receive a fishing line 28, extending through eyes carried by a rod or pole 29, when the rod or pole is placed on the rest. The tubes may extend in a curved manner, concave upwards. It will be seen that the upper end of the recess 27 is wider than the lower end. Also the recess has smooth sides and has no edges undesirably to catch the line 28. CLAIMS

1. A rest for a fishing rod comprising a structure providing opposed members for engaging an end of a respective flexible tube, the inner ends of the tubes being connected to a substantially rigid coupling to define a gap between inner end regions of the tubes to provide a line drop recess.

A rest as claimed in claim 1, in which the coupling comprises a base, and two spaced elongate elements extending to one side of the base and each defining with the base an annular recess for receipt of one end of a respective flexible tube with end regions of the tubes spaced to define a gap therebetween to form said recess.

3. A rest as claimed in claim 2, in which the elements are parallel.

4. A rest as claimed in claim 2 or 3, in which the elements taper inwardly as they extend away from the base.
