Abstract
218,782. Day, A. May 1, 1923. Paper bags, making ; paper bags, filling.- The invention relates to machines for making and filling paper bags with tea &c., of the kind in which the material is fed into a funnel on the stem of which the bag is formed, such as is described in Specification 198,405, and consists in providing means for notching the paper sheet, whereby an " interlocking " fold is formed on the ends of the bag. A web of paper is drawn from a roll 17 by means of a feed-roller 38 through a punching device which comprises a punch c<13> and a die in a crossbar C. The cross-bar C is provided with bearings for vertical rods c<4>, c' on which slide members c<7>. c<10>, and c<14>, carrying an anvil c‹, the punch c<13> and a paper-gripper respectively. The members are spaced apart on the rods c<4>, c<5> by means of springs, which allow the paper to be held firmly while being punched. The punch is depressed-by means of cams c<16>, c<17>. The web of paper is severed across the orifice punched out as at b<1>, by means of a knife 103, and the sheet is wrapped round a funnel D, to which a charge of tea is delivered. The notched end of the blank projects below the end of the former D and a folder F advances to close the bottom of the bag. The top of a previously filled bag is closed simultaneously by the folder F, the bag being held in a mould E. A blade f<13> is advanced in an inclined position to engage the side h<1> of the tube remote from the recess and is then brought to a horizontal position by a cam f<21> engaging a roller f<17> on the tail of the blade, to fold the projecting part of the tube across the end of the former. The blade f<14> may be similarly operated, or a catch f<22> on the tail of the blade may engage a roller f<23>. A plunger f<24>, working in the body of the former F, is advanced to cause blocks f<34>, f<35> to crease the folded part of the bags against comer-posts d<1>, e<1> of the former and mould. The blocks f<34>, f3' are withdrawn and the blades f<13>, f<14> are held in horizontal position by cams during their withdrawal after the side folds h<5>, h<6> have been made and while the last fold is being completed. In the case of lined bags, the lining is made small enough to avoid being caught in the overlapping fold.
