Abstract

In apparatus for sizing filament yarn, in order to save separate stretching assemblies, to ensure a defined stretching temperature and to be able to work with minimum possible speed in the size application, a stretching is provided in the wet area (10) between the squeezing mechanism (9) of the sizing trough (8) and the subsequent cylinder drier (11). This is achieved by driving the cylinder drier at a speed exceeding the transport speed in the squeezer. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Method and apparatus for sizing filamentyarn The invention relates to a method for sizing filament yarn, utilising a sizing installation comprising in sequence a sizing trough, a squeezer, a wet area, a cylinderdrierand a winder, in which the yarn is also stretched. Itfurther relates to an apparatus for carrying out the method with a stretching apparatus co-operating with the sizing installation.
In E.P.-O.S. No.91 549 a method for the combined stretching and sizing of polyester yarn is described in which the stretching and sizing oftheyarn take place during immersion in the sizing trough. According to E.P. - O.S. No. 143,288 a yarn can also be stretched in a trough containing a thermostatic fluid. According to the further E.P. - O.S. No. t44,617 the filament yarn can firstly be stretched in a thermostatic fluid and then sized. Such stretch-sizing methods with stretching section placed deliberately in the passage ofthe yarn through liquid are also described in the periodical "Textil-Praxis"6l85613to620.
From the periodical "ITS" 4/84, pages 59/60 a method for stretching filamentyarn in shearing has become known. In this method a stretching assembly is arranged between creel and shear beam of a direct shearing machine. If a sizing installation is to be integrated into such an apparatus, it is interposed between monitoring and oiling apparatus adjoining the stretching assembly and the concluding direct shearing machine.
In all known stretching assemblies it is necessary to maintain a predetermined stretching temperature exactly.
This instruction causes difficulties both in the wet methods, where the stretching takes place in a bath and in the dry methods in which a separate stretching assembly is provided. In stretch-sizing a considerable disadvantage consists in that the sizing must take place with the final speed ofthe stretched material.
The sizing installation must also be operated with the final draw-off speed in the dry method with sizing following the stretching.
The invention is based upon the problem, in a method in which a filamentyarn or a corresponding band at threads is to be sized and stretched in one action, of avoiding additional stretching assemblies in a sizing installation or additional sizing assemblies in a stretching installation and thus ofminimisingthe investment and space expense. Furthermore the problem consists in ensuring a definedtemperature of the yarn in the stretching region with minimum possible expense Moreover a controlled stretching and sizing areto beachievedatthesametimewithout the necessity of raising the speed ofthe size applica tion,se ean, tially above the entry speed ofthe yarn.
Firtal.l, ivention isto produce a method which is usablebothirvwapsizingand in assembly sizing with full numberof threads.
The solution in accordance with the invention consists, forthe initially stated method with a sizing installation containing in sequence a squeezerfollowing a sizingtrough, a wet area and a cylinder drier, in that the yarn is stretched in the wet area by driving of the cylinder drier with a speed exceeding the transport speed in the squeezer. Forthe apparatus the solution consists in thatthe wet area is formed as stretching apparatus with the squeezer as braking system and the cylinder drier as drawing system. If the squeezer and/orthe cylinder drier cannot hold or grasp with the force adequate for stretching, according to the further invention a drawing cylinder is associated with the squeezer and/or the cylinder drier.
While in the priorartthe basis is adoptedthatthe stretching must take place beforethe sizing or in the sizing bath itself, because it was assumed that only thus can a stretching controlled as regards tension and temperature be achieved, the invention is based upon the basic idea of using the machine elements of the conventional filament sizing so that a stretching can take place between the squeezer cylinder ofthe (last) sizing trough and the cylinder drier in what is called the wet area.
The use in accordance with the invention of the squeezer mechanism adioiningthesizing trough and ofthe cylinder drier as stretching mechanism in the region of the wet area of a sizing installation achieves the object that additional machine assemblies for stretching the yarn are fundamentally unnecessary.
For the execution of the method in accordance with the invention therefore special investment or additional space are not required. The individual threads of the thread band to betreated possess a defined temperature in the stretching region which correspondstothetemperature level ofthesizing bath. The subsequentthermaltreatment in drying lies in the region ofthe cooling limittemperatureand accordinglycan be maintained incritically. Furthermore the speed in the size application corresponds to the entry speed of the yarn, accordingly it is lower by the stretch ratio than the drying and winding speed of the finally sized and stretched yarn.
The method according to the invention and the apparatus according to the invention can be used both in warp sizing and in assembly sizing with full number ofthreads. Tangling ofthethreads in the unstretched condition, for example directly before sizing or in warping, can take place here if assembly sizing is used.
Details ofthe invention will be explained by reference to the diagrammatic representation of an example of embodiment in the accompanying drawing.
According to the example of embodiment a thread band designated as a whole by 1 and consisting of individual filament yarns 2 runs from a creel (not shown) bywayofa reed3,afirstdrawing mechanism 4 (delivery mechanism), an entry cylinder 5 and a dipping cylinder 6through a sizing bath 8 situated in a sizing trough 7 into a squeezing mechanism 9 arranged atthe exit ofthe sizing trough 7. The squeezing mechanism 9 is followed by a wet area 10 in which the thread band 1 can be divided by wet dividing baths (not shown). The wet area 10 is adjoined by a cylinder drier designated as a whole by 11 ,from which the thread band 1 runs through a second drawing mechanism 12 (draw-off mechanism) through adryarea 13Ontoa beam 14(winder).
In the region ofthewet area 10 thethread band 1 is guided through an air drier 15 in which heated air is blown on to the thread band 1. Since the individual yarns 2 ofthethread band 1 have merely been squeezed in the squeezing mechanism 9 in the wet area 10, they possess such considerable residual moisture that in the air drier 15 what is called the cooling limittemperature establishes itself within the individual yarns 2. the sizing bath 8 in the sizing trough 7 possesses a temperature ordinarily of about 40to 600C., a cooling limit temperature defined in the individual case of less than 60"C. ofthe yarn 2 establishes itself substantially independently of the temperature ofthe hot air blown on to the thread band 1 inthe region oftheairdrier 15.
Thethread band 1 pretreated inthewetarea 10 runsforfurther heating and drying on to the cylinder drier 11 consisting of a plurality, for example twelve, of individual cylinders 16 There a yarn temperature of about 1 200C. can be establishedforthe further drying.
In the example of embodiment as described the first drawing mechanism 4 and/orthe squeezing mechanism 9 serve as brake mechanism of the wet area 10 formed as stretching apparatus, whilethecylinder drier 1 f and/ortheseconddrawingmechanism 12 supply the pertinent counter-force.
Forthis purpose a drive 17 can be allocated to the squeezing mechanism 9 and a drive 18 to the cylinder drier 11, with the provision that the draw-off speed of the cylinder drier 11 becomes greater according to the desired stretching ratiothan the delivery speed of the squeezing mechanism 9. The desired stretching of the thread band 1 can thus be adjusted without problem by a regulating system 19 interposed between the drive systems 17 and 18. The delivery speed ofthe squeezing mechanism 9 here corresponds to the relatively low speed in the size application, while the draw-off speed ofthe cylinder drier 11 is substantially equal to the winding speed on the beam 14.
If the drawing mechanisms 4 and 12 are partially used for stretching, they can likewise be actuated through drives 20 and 21 adjusted by the regulating system 19. Thefirst drawing mechanism 4 is advantageously combined in drive with the squeezing mechanism 9. lnasimilarmanneritisfavourableto combinethecylinderdrierll 1 t in drive with the second drawing mechanism 12. In both cases a threedimensional combination - first drawing mechanism 4andsqueezer9orcylinderdrier 11 andsecond drawing mechanism 12-is advantageous.
