Abstract

A motor end cap 1 has a self-aligning tubular bearing 2 with part conical end surfaces 2a, 2b. One end 2b of bearing 2 is supported by a single locating and retaining plate 4. Plate 4 is retained in position by a plurality of radially outwardly directed legs 4b in engagement with wall 1c of chamber 3. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to motors This invention relates to improvements in or relating to motors and is particularly concerned with a motor cap end bearing assembly of a type having a selfaligning bearing (hereinafter referred to as ofthetype specified).
Motor cap end bearing assemblies ofthe aforementioned type have a chamber surrounding the self-aligning bearing. The inner end ofthe bearing is supported by a locating plate and a furtherthin, retaining ring is required to be located in the chamber in the finished assembly to retain the locating plate in position. Thethin retaining ring tendsto wave and distort when in position and the bearing assembly may thus not be able to withstand forces that it otherwise might be able to stand if the bearing location and retaining means wee improved.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a motor end cap bearing assembly of simpler construc- tion requiring fewer parts.
According to the present invention there is provided a motor end cap bearing assembly of the type specified comprising an end cap with said selfaligning bearing being oftubularform and supported atone end of a chamber by an end wall ofthe cap, the other end of the bearing being supported byasingle locating and retaining plate which locates said other end ofthe bearing relative to the chamber and the plate itself is retained in position relative to the chambey by a plurality of radially outwardly directed legs or teeth in engagement with a wall of the chamber.
Further according to the present invention there is provided a locating and retaining plate suitable for the motor end cap bearing assembly according to the immediately preceding paragraph.
Further according to the present invention there is provided a motor comprising at least one motor end cap bearing assembly as claimed in the preceding penultimate paragraph.
Preferably, the main plane ofthe locating andre- taining plate is generally parallel to the main plane of said end wall of the cap, and, preferably, said plate is spaced from said end wall by a spacer pad (which may be of felt material).
The edges of the legs or teeth may be straight or they may, in some embodiments, be arcute to suit. In one embodimentthe plate has 6 legs orteeth of.1 25" (0.3175 cm) length with six slots extending radially outwardlyfrom a central aperture of the plate which receives and supports the self-aligning bearing. Each siot is 0.1" (0.254) width. The external diameter and internal diameterofthe plate are 1.3" (3.3 cm) and .5" (1.27 cm) respectively. The plate is, preferably, of about .025" (.064 cm) thickness.
An embodiment of a motor end cap bearing assemblywill now be described, by waxy example only, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a sectional view of the motor end cap with bearing assembly; Figure 2 shows a n end view looking in the direction of Ain Figure 1,and Figure3shows a locating and retaining plate ofthe bearing assembly.
Referring to the figures in the drawings, a motor end cap 1 has a motor end cap bearing assembly comprising a self-aligning tubular bearing 2 of known type having part conical end surfaces 2a, 2b. The cap 1 defines a chamber3 and an end wall 1a ofthecap has an outwardly extending part-conical portion 1b supporting the self-aligning bearing 2 bythe partconical end surface 2a. The other end ofthe bearing 2b is supported by a single locating and retaining plate 4 (see Figure 3). An inwardly extending partconical portion 4a of plate 4 locates the end 2b ofthe bearing relative to chamber 3 and the plate itself is retained in position relative to the chamber 3 as shown by a plurality of radially outwardly directed legs or teeth 4b in engagement with a cylindrical wall 1 c of the chamber3.An annularfelt spacer pad 5 is provided in the chamber3 in between end wall 1 a and plate 4.
The relative dimensions of the plate as shown in Figure 3 are particularly advantageous. The width W of each slot S is 0.1(0.254cm). The external diameter and internal diameter of plate 4 are 1.3" (3.3 cm) and .5" (1.23 cm) respectively. The thickness of the plate is 0.25" (.064).
In an alternative embodiment (not shown) straight edges 4b' may be arcuateto provide a curved convex surfaceto contact the cylindrical wail 1 c.
In use, a shaft of the motor (not shown) passes axially th rough the bearing 2, and the aforedescribed construction ofthe bearing assembly using a single locating and retaining plate 4 suitably dimensioned both to locate the bearing properly and retain itself in position in the chamber is advantageous both in terms of cost and ease of assembly. Additionally, the bearing assembly may well be able to withstand greaterforces than hitherto achieved with other motor end cap bearing assemblies.
1. A motor end cap bearing assembly ofthe type specified comprising an end cap with said selfaligning bearing being oftubularform and supported atone end of a chamber byan end wall ofthe cap, the other end of the bearing being supported by a single locating and retaining plate which locates said other end ofthe bearing relative to the chamber and the plate itself is retained in position relative to the cham- ber by a plurality of radially outwardly directed legs or teeth in engagement with a wall of the chamber.
2. An assembly as claimed in Claim 1 in which the main plane ofthe locating and retaining plate is generally parallel to the main plane of said end wall ofthe cap.
3. An assembly as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 in which said plate is spaced from said end wall by a spacer pad.
4. An assembly as claimed in Claim 3 in which said spacer pad is offelt material.
