Abstract
To secure a vehicle on a transporter, webbing strops 10 are used which are looped around a part of the vehicle underbody. The strops have terminal fittings 12 at each end, and the terminal fittings are adapted to be engaged by either a hook 26, or by a T-bar connector 24. The terminal fittings are cranked to allow two to be attached to a single hook or T-bar without the strops forcing them apart. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Securing vehicles on transporters
This invention relates to apparatus for securing vehicles on transporters.
A recent development is for new cars to be designed with built-in underbody attachment points which can be used to secure the vehicle on a transporter. These attachment points require special T-bar fittings on the transporter to engage in the attachment points. However it is frequently necessary for a transporter to carry different vehicle models, some of which are without built-in attachment points.
According to the invention, there is provided apparatus for securing a vehicle on a transporter comprising a webbing strap and, at each end of the strap, a terminal fitting adapted to be engaged either by a T-bar or by a hook.
The terminal fitting may have a slot for receiving a T-bar and a round hole for receiving a hook.
The strap may be secured to the terminal fitting by stitching or, preferably, the terminal fittings may be provided with two parallel slots through which the strap can pass so that the strap can be secured to the terminal fitting without any stitching.
The terminal fitting may be cranked so that when the T-bar and hook engageable parts of two fittings are placed together, the parts secured to the straps are spaced apart.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of apparatus in accordance with the invention; and
Figures 2 and 3 are respectively front and side views of a terminal fitting.
A webbing strap 10 has a terminal fitting 12 at each end. Each terminal fitting is a metal plate which has a circular aperture 14, an elongate aperture 16 and two parallel slots 18 and 20. The plate is cranked at 22 so that the slots 18 and 20 lie outside the plane of the major part of the plate.
The plates are attached to the webbing by passing an end of the webbing through the slot 20, through the slot 18 and back through the slot 20. The slot 20 is wider than the slot 18 so that it can accept two thicknesses of webbing.
The aperture 16 is designed to engaged with a T-bar 24 which passes through the aperture and is then turned through 90 degrees to lock in the aperture. The same T-bar 24 also fits into built-in attachment points on a car underbody, when these are present.
The large circular aperture 14 is designed to receive a conventional hook 26.
In use, the strap 10 is looped over a strong, accessible component on the car underbody. The two ends of the strap are then brought together as shown in Fig. 1 with their metal plates back to back and either a T-bar 24 or a hook 26 is engaged with the respective aperture in both plates. Whichever of the
T-bar or hook is used will engage through both plates. The strap 10 will then be pulled tight by tensioning a chain or strap attached to the T-bar or hook.
The use of the terminal fittings shown makes it possible for a transporter equipped with T-bars 24 to secure either a car which has built-in attachment points or a car without, by using the strap described.
Since the terminal fittings 12 are not sewn to the webbing 10, when the webbing becomes worn or damaged it can be easily removed and replaced with a fresh length of webbing without the need for any tools.
The cranking of the end of the plates stops the ends of the webbing, which project from the plane of the plate, from holding the two plates apart.
1. Apparatus for securing a vehicle on a transporter comprising a webbing strap and, at each end of the strap, a terminal fitting adapted to be engaged either by a T-bar or by a hook.
2. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the terminal fitting has a slot for receiving a T-bar and a round hole for receiving a hook.
3. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the strap is secured to the terminal fitting by stitching.
4. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 or
Claim 2, wherein the terminal fitting is provided with two parallel slots through which the strap can pass so that the strap can be secured to the terminal fitting without any stitching.
5. Apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the terminal fitting is cranked so that when the T-bar and hook engageable parts of two fittings are placed together, the parts secured to the straps are spaced apart.
6. Apparatus for securing a vehicle on a transporter, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
