Abstract

A kit for colouring a design on an item of clothing, such as a t-shirt, comprises a t-shirt to which a design outline is applied, and a plurality of differently coloured inks which are applied, by brush, to the areas within the design outline. The resultant design is allowed to dry and rendered permanent by the application of heat.

Description

SPECIFICATION Colouring designs on clothing This invention relates to the colouring of designs on casual or leisure clothing and especially, but not exclusively, on T-shirts.
According to the present invention, there is provided a kitto enable a userto colour a design on an item of clothing, such as a T-shirt, the kit comprising a T-shirt, to which is applied a design outline, and a plurality of differently coloured inks.
The present invention enables a purchaser of the kit to colour an outline design on, for instance, a T-shirt either in accordance with a colouring scheme suggested in instructions accompanying the kit or according to his own choice, making use ofthe differently coloured inks forming partofthe kit.
The design outline may be of any suitable design, such as a crowd scene, a comic character, an abstract design orcountrysceneorevenaslogan, orsome combination of these possibilities. Preferably, the outline design will be such that it is divided up into approximately equal areas which makes it easier to colourthe drawing using a single brush of a size appropriateforthesize of areas ofthe design outline.
Preferably an appropriately-sized brush is included in the kit.
Reference will be made hereinafterto a T-shirt but it should be appreciated that the invention may be applied to other items ofclothing.
The T-shirt may be made of any suitable material, for instance, 100% cotton or a 50/50 cotton/polyester mixture.
The design outline is formed using a spirit based ink, for instance, inks sold underthetrademark TEXOPAQUE. Such inks are applied by screen printing in orderto produce the design outline.
The inks provided for the kit are preferably water-based inks which may be applied to the areas defined by the design outline without affecting the integrity of the design outline itself. Typically, the kit may include up to six bottles of differently coloured inks, the colours being red, yellow, blue, black, white and flesh-coloured.
Bywayofexplanation, the marks may be water-based marks sold underthe trade mark TEXISCREEN.
The kit preferably includes a backing card which is placed within the T-shirt and underlying the outline design while the marks are being applied. This backing card prevents the inks from passing though the layer of material and contacting the otherwise adjacent layer of material which mighttypically be the backoftheT-shirt.
The kit preferably includes a set of instructions to enable the userto apply the inks intheappropriate manner.
The present invention also provides a method of colouring an outline design applied to an article of clothing, such as aT-shirt, the method comprising applying to the item of clothing a plurality of water-based inks to colourthe design, allowing the inkstodryandthen applyingsufficientheattothe resultant design to render it permanent.
The method may be carried out using the kit of the present invention. Preferably the heat is applied by means of an iron which is applied to the reverse side ofthe material to which the inks have been applied.
It is important not to apply the iron directly to the coloured areas in orderto avoid spoiling the design.
1. A kit for enabling a userto colour a design on an item of clothing, the kit comprising an item of clothing, towhich is applied a design outline, and a plurality of differently coloured inks.
2. A kit according to Claim 1, and including a brush forapplying the coloured inkstothe item of clothing.
3. A kit according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which the inks are water-based.
4. A kit according to any of the preceding claims, and including a backing card for placing within the item of clothing, underlying the design outline while the inks are being applied.
5. A kit according to any of the preceding claims, and including a set of instructions to enable the user to applythe inks inthe appropriate manner.
6. A method of colouring a design outline applied to an item of clothing, the method comprising applying to the item of clothing a plurality of water-based inks to colourthe design, allowing the inksto dry and then applying sufficient heattothe resultant design to render it permanent.
7. A method according to Claim 6, in which heat is applied by means of an iron which is applied to the reverse side of the material to which the inks have been applied.
8. A kit according to Claim 1 and substantially as herein described.
