Abstract

Synthetic resins are obtained by heating under high vacuum a mixture of phenol, formaldehyde, glycerine and caustic alkali with or without small quantities of ammonia. Without ammonia light-coloured products, suitable for example for automobile wind screens, are obtained, while the presence of ammonia tends to amber coloured products suitable for cigar and cigarette holders &c. The mixture, including preferably caustic potash as the alkali, may be heated under a vacuum of 29.5 to 30 inches at 110 to 120 DEG C. The resulting oily liquid is poured into moulds and the heating under vacuum continued. The solidified product is finally baked at about 150 DEG C. either in vacuo or at normal pressures.
