Abstract
A snap locking device to be used for snap locking a first member 1 such as a folding leg into at least two different angular positions in relation to a second member 12 such as a keyboard table or light box, for example, wherein the first member comprises a semi-circular ring 4 provided with at least two depressions 5 and 6, whereas the second member is a detent 11 arranged to engage with either one of the depressions, producing in this manner a snap locking effect, movement between the two positions causing resilient deformation of the ring 4. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Snap locking means for a folding leg
The present invention relates to a snap locking means.
More specifically, the present invention is designed to achieve a satisfactor and easily manufacturable locking means for legs intended to provide an ergonomically correct working position at works using for example keyboards, simple types of drawing tables and light boxes, etc. The invention can also be utilized for other purposes where a safe and readily manufactured locking device is desirable.
According to the present invention there is disclosd means for snap locking a first detail such as a folding leg, for example, into at least two different angular positions in relation to a second detail such as a keyboard for example, one of said details having at least two mutually spaced depressions and the other one comprising a dowel which, in dependence of the mutual angular positions of the details, is made engageable with either one of the depressions for providing a snap locking effect, wherein the first detail comprises a substantially semi-circular ring provided with at least two depressions; that the first detail has an inner peripheral surface spaced apart from and facing the ring; and that the dowel is disposed on the second detail and is oriented towards the ring while being arranged, in dependence of the angular position, to be capable of pressing in said ring towards the inner peripheral surface.
Preferably the semi-circular ring constitutes an integrated part of the first detail.
Preferably the dowel constitutes an integrated part of the second detail.
An embodiment of the inventive device for a snap locking mechanism is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which
Figure 1 shows a first detail which is snap locked in a retracted angular position in relation to a second detail;
Figure 2 shows the first detail in an angular position without snap locking effect;
Figure 3 shows the first detail, snap locked in an extended position in relation to the second detail; and
Figure 4 shows to a larger scale of somewhat modified embodiment of the first detail, and a portion of the second detail.
The first detail 1 illustrated in the accompanying drawings consists of one, or alternatively two parts.
One end 2 of the detail 1 is distinguished by having a substantially circular shape and is made of a resilient, strong material such as glass fibre reinforced thermoplastics, for example. The other end 3 of the detail is distinguished by being made of a friction material such as dexmopane for example, which is affixed to said detail either by gluing or screwing. Alternatively, the friction material is applied by means of double molding.
The first detail is further characterized in that an outer ring 4 ofsemi-circularshape is formed at one end 2 of this detail. The ring has in its periphery at least two mutually spaced depressions or notches 5 and 6 which in turn correspond to depressions 7 and 8 made in the inner, circular peripheral surface 9.
The detail extends around the marked center 10 of the hole. When an outer dowel 11. constituting an integrated part of the second detail 12, presses against the ring described, this ring is pressed in towards the lower peripheral surface creating thereby a "fixed" position when the dowel has passed up to one of the depressions according to ligs. 1 and 3, respectively. In order for the first detail to be further pivoted in relation to the second detail 12, there is initially required a considerably increased torque. Locking has taken place.
As is clearly evident from Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the position of the indicated center of the hole in the first detail is not altered in relation to the outer dowel when turning the first detail relative to the second detail into either one of the positions where a snap locking effect is obtained, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, or into an intermediate angular position without snap locking effect, see Fig. 2. This is due to the pivotable suspension of the first detail. If the one end of the first detail has only ali insignificant material thickness in relation to the diameter of the hole with indicated center 10, the end 2 surrounding the hole may present a collar or flange 13, which can extend out from the plane of the end a distance corresponding to the size of the diameter of the hole.The first detail can then be suspended with the aid of a pivot pin 15 orthe like member which extends into the hole and further along the inside of the collar, and is joined to the second detail.
As is clearly apparent from Figs. 1 and 2, the other end 3 of the first detail abuts against a support 14 both in the retracted and in the extended angular position. The differences between these positions are determined by the differences between the positions of the depressions and are, as is clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 2, slightly less than one-fourth of a revolution.
With a material thickness of 2-3 mm in one end 2, the ring can have an outer diameter of about 23.5 mm and an inner diameter of about 21.1 mm; the inner peripheral surface thereby having an outer diameter of about 19,9 mm, the hole a diameter a f about 8.2 mm and the flange or collar an outer diameter of about 12.2 mm, whereas the first detail has a total length of about 55 mm. The semi-circular ring, which is then integrated with the remainder of the end 2 only at its two diametrically opposed end portions, thus has a radial thickness of about 2.4 mm. The depressions can then have a substantially planar bottom and plane side walls, the side walls thereby forming an angle of approximately 90 to one another.The outer dowel then has a substantially planar top with a width adapted to the bottom width and plane side walls of the depressions, said side walls sloping in conformity with the inclination of the side walls of the depressions 5 and 6.
The invention is naturally not r restricted to the embodiment illustrated in the figure, but somewhat modified embodiments are conceivable. For example, the ring 4 need not extend exactly half a revolution around the hole, but may just as well extend somewhat more or less than half a revolution. Furthermore, the number of depressions in the ring need not be limited to two; it is instead possible to have more than two if more than two angular positions with snap locking should be desired. Also, the turning angle between two snap positions need not be precisely a quarter of a revolution; both somewhat larger and somewhat narrowerturning angles are feasible.
