Abstract
217,005. Fairbrother, E., and Windsor, C. S. April 24, 1923. Force-transmitting mechanism hand and foot actuation.-In a four-wheel braking system for motor-vehicles, depression of the brake pedal 4 applies the front wheel brakes through a cable 6 by rotating grooved cams 8 fixed at the ends of a hollow shaft 5 through which the cable passes, and actuates the rear wheel brakes by rotating an arm 9 connected to the brakes through a flexible or rigid connection 10, a rock shaft 12 and tension members 14. The pedal is freely mounted on the shaft 5 and is connected to the arm 9 and the adjacent cam 8 either by a differential link 40, Fig. 2, or by bevel gears 41 - - 43, Fig. 4, so that the rock shafts 5, 12 react on each other, and in the event of the connections to the front or rear brakes being broken, the' rock shaft still connected to its brakes will still be actuated when the limit of movement of the link 40 is reached or when the gear 41 engages the last tooth on one of the wheels 42 or 43. Independent actuation of the rear brakes mav be effected bv a hand lever 22 connected bv a flexible or rigid connection 20 to a member 18 freely mountea on the shaft 12 and having teeth 17 which engage teeth 16 on the member 15. When the connections 10, 20 are rigid, their ends are slotted to allow of their relative movement during application of the brakes by the pedal 4 or the lever 22.
