Abstract
A connector for panels of an article of furniture has a cylindrical housing (1 Figure 2) which can be fitted into a blind bore in a first furniture panel 8. The housing (1) is provided with a receiving groove 6 for receiving one edge of a further panel 7 and in which housing there is rotatably mounted an eccentric 15 by means of which a claw 9 comprising a base plate 11 and a hook limb portion 10 for clampingly engaging behind the rear wall is movable transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the receiving groove 6 to engage with or disengage from the further panel 7. The housing (1) is provided at the side which is diametrally opposite to the hook limb portion 10 with an opening 20 for the end of the base plate 11 and said end is provided with anchoring teeth for engaging the wall of the blind bore in the 1st panel 8 on rotation of the eccentric. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Wall connector for an article of furniture
This invention relates to a wall connector for an article of furniture such as a cupboard, for connecting a first wall such as a side wall, a lower panel or an upper panel of the cupboard to a second wall such as a rear wall. The connector has a cylindrical housing which can be fitted in a blind bore in the first wall. The housing has a receiving groove for receiving one edge of the second wall. In the housing is rotatably mounted an eccentric by means of which a claw comprising a hook limb portion for engaging behind the second wall and base plate is movable transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the receiving groove.
A rear wall connector of this kind is known (German laid-open application (DE-OS) No 32 15 365), wherein the housing is fixed in the blind bore in the side wall of a cupboard exclusively by anchoring ribs provided on the outside peripheral surface of the house. As the anchoring ribs preferably are made of plastics material and are integral with the housing, that arrangement does not ensure that the ribs penetrate into the material of the side wall sufficiently to produce a positive connection.
There is thus a need for a generally improved wall connector with better anchoring in the blind bore in a wall of an article of furniture.
According to the present invention there is provided a wall connector for an article of furniture such as a cupboard, including a cylindrical housing which can be fitted into a blind bore in a first wall or panel of the article, such as in a side wall, a lower panel or an upper panel of a cupboard, and which is provided with a receiving groove of a cupboard, and which is provided with a receiving groove for receiving one edge of a second wall such as a rear wall of the article of furniture, in which housing is slidably mounted a claw comprising a hook limb portion for engaging behind the second wall and a base plate, and an eccentric mounted for rotation to move the claw transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the receiving groove to engage the hook limb portion with or disengage it from the second wall, the
housing of the wall connector being provided at the side which is diametrally opposite to the hook limb portion with an extension and retraction opening through which anchoring teeth on the end of the base plate of the claw can be extended out of the housing into the first wall or retracted into the housing out of the first wall.
When the connector is tightened, in which operation the hook limb portion of the claw which engages behind the rear wall clampingly engages the rear wall, the anchoring teeth are extended out of the housing and driven into the material of the side wall of the cupboard.
As the claw and the anchoring teeth thereof preferably are made of metal, that gives strong and intensive anchoring of the wall connector in the blind bore in the side wall.
For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view taken along line I-I in
Figure 2 of a rear wall connector of the invention fitted into a blind bore in a side wall of a cupboard, before an eccentric of the connector is tightened,
Figure 2 is a view in the direction of the arrow II in
Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line Ill-Ill in
Figure 1 after the eccentric has been tightened,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along line IV-IV in Figure 5 of a second embodiment of a rear wall connector of the invention, and
Figure 5 is a view in the direction of the arrow V in
Figure 4.
A wall connector of the invention comprises a cylindrical housing 1 which is made up of two parts or halves 2 and 3 which are connected together by means of a pin or bolt 4 and which have a plane of separation 5.
The housing 1 is provided with a receiving groove 6 for receiving a vertical edge of a second wall such as a rear wall 7 of an article of furniture such as a cupboard, such groove extending transversely with respect to the plane of separation 5.
The groove 6 is aligned with a receiving groove which is provided, for the vertical edge of the rear wall 7, in a first wall such as a side wall 8, a lower panel or an upper panel of the cupboard and the housing 1 is locatable in a blind bore 21 in the side wall 8.
A claw 9 is mounted in the housing 1 and is movable transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the receiving groove 6. The claw 9 is actuated by means of an eccentric 10a.
The claw has a hook limb portion 10 which engages behind the rear wall 7 and a base plate 11 which is provided with anchoring teeth 12 at the side that is remote from the hook limb portion 10.
In the illustrated embodiments, the anchoring teeth 12 are disposed adjacent the longitudinal edges 13 of the base plate.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 3, provided between the anchoring teeth 12 of the base plate is a bent-over strip portion 14 against which an eccentric disc 15 bears. The eccentric disc 15 lies with its lower boundary surface on a part 16 of the base plate 11, which extends at an inclined angle in the housing. At the side remote from the base plate, the eccentric is provided with a cylindrical disc 18 which is mounted in a bore in the housing rotatably about an axis 17. In the embodiment illustrated, the disc 18 is provided with a cross slot 19 for receiving an operating tool.
In the region of the end of the base plate 11 which is provided with anchoring teeth 12, the housing has an extension and retraction opening 20 so that, when the eccentric is tightened, the anchoring teeth 12 are moved out of the housing and penetrate into the material of the side wall 8, to hold the housing 1 fixedly in the blind bore in the side wall 8.
When the housing is first fitted into the corresponding blind bore 21 in the side wall 8, the ec centric disc 15 occupies the position shown in Figures 1 and 2. In that condition, the anchoring teeth 12 are within the housing.
After the rear wall 7 has been fitted into the receiving groove in the rear wall connector, the hook limb portion 10 engages behind the rear wall.
When the eccentric disc is moved into the clamping position shown in Figure 3, the hook limb portion 10 is clampingly pressed against the rear wall and the anchoring teeth 12 are extended out of the housing.
It will be seen from Figure 1 that the base plate 11 is provided with a bent or cranked portion 22.
The base plate forms the bottom 23 of the receiving groove and the portion 16 which extends at an inclined position in the housing and on which the eccentric disc 15 is disposed.
It will be seen from Figure 1 that the axis of rotation 17 of the eccentric disc forms an angle which is not a 90" angle, with the upper boundary surface 24 of the housing.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 4 anc 5, the eccentric disc 15 is disposed in a slot 25 in the portion 16 of the base plate 11.
At the lower end, the eccentric has a cylindrical journal 26 which is mounted rotatably in a corresponding bore in the housing.
Preferably the claw and anchoring teeth 12 are made of metal to provide a stronger connection with the side wall 8.
Claims (6)
1. A wall connector for an article of furniture such as a cupboard, including a cylindrical housing which can be fitted into a blind bore in a first wall or panel of the article, such as in a side wall, a lower panel or an upper panel of a cupboard, and which is provided with a receiving groove for receiving one edge of a second wall such as a rear wall of the article of furniture, in which housing is slidably mounted a claw comprising a hook limb portion for engaging behind the second wall and a base plate, and an eccentric mounted for rotation to move the claw transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the receiving groove to engage the hook limb portion with or disengage it from the second wall, the housing of the wall connector being provided at the side which is diametrally opposite to the hook limb portion with an extension and retraction opening through which anchoring teeth on the end of the base plate of the claw can be extended out of the housing into the first wall or retracted into the housing out of the first wall.

A wall connector according to claim 1, wherein the anchoring teeth are disposed adjacent longitudinal edges of the base plate, and the base plate, between the anchoring teeth, has a bentover strip portion against which a disc of the eccentric bears, so that rotation of the eccentric causes the disc to more eccentricaliy and displace the base plate longitudinally.

A wall connector according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein a part of the claw forming the bottom of the receiving groove is connected to a portion of the base plate in the region of which the eccentric is arranged, by a cranked portion, and the axis of rotation of the eccentric forms an angle which is not a 90" angle, to the boundary surface of the housing uppermost or outermost with respect to said bottom of the receiving groove.
4. A wall connector according to claim 1, wherein the eccentric has an eccentric disc which is disposed in a slot in a portion of the base plate.
5. A wall connector according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the claw and its anchoring teeth are made of metal.
6. A wall connector for an article of furniture, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 1 to 3 or Figures 4 and 5 of the accompanying drawings.
