Abstract
A method of connecting together two pieces of MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard), comprising the steps of forming a first piece of said MDF with one or more projections, forming the second piece of MDF with one or more recesses, said projections and recesses being complementary to each other, and engaging said projection(s) fully into said recess(es) so as to lock said pieces together. One piece of MDF may have a decorative surface applied thereto, eg a veneer, pre-painted or polished, for walls, skirting boards or architraves.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Jointing Method
This invention relates to jointing and particularly to a method of jointing together two or more pieces of MDF.
MDF is defined as medium density fibreboard which is a homogenous material formed by compacting or pressing together granules or fibres of wood and which in its finished state has a uniform density from surface to core so that it is virtually impervious to water or moisture.
Known composite materials presently used in joinery and other woodworking activities, for example chipboard and plywood, suffer the disadvantage that they are water and moisture permeable, and in addition it is necessary upon connection together of two pieces of the material to utilise extraneous means such as adhesive, screws or nails or other means to ensure proper connection.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of connecting together two pieces of MDF (as herein defined), comprising the steps of forming a first piece of said MDF with one or more projections, forming the second piece of MDF with one or more recesses, said projections and recesses being complementary to each other, and engaging said projection(s) fully into said recess(es) so as to lock said pieces together.
Preferably, said first piece of MDF will be formed with at least two projections, the second piece of MDF being formed with a corresponding plurality of recesses. Said first piece of MDF may have a decorative surface applied thereto, such as veneer, or said first piece may be pre-painted or polished.
The projections and recesses will preferably be formed with a router or similar apparatus so as to ensure true and accurate machining of the projections and recesses.
When the projections of the first piece of
MDF are inserted into the recesses of the second piece of MDF, and pressed fully into said recesses, the fibrous surfaces of the adjacent faces of the projections and recesses interlock with each other so as to make it impossible or virtually impossible to separate the two pieces without causing damage thereto. No extraneous fixing means is or are required as is the case with other materials.
Examples of the utilisation of MDF connected together according to the invention are decorative strips for walls, skirting boards, architrives and so on, but the method of the invention may also be used in the construction of furniture and other articles.
In the formation of a decoractive strip, for example, the second piece of MDF will be secured in position on a wall, as for example by screws, whereafter the first piece of MDF having a pre-finished surface will be pressed into engagement with the second piece so as to conceal the screws and so as to connect the two pieces together to give the desired finish and to conceal the second piece of
MDF. Skirting boards and architrives will be formed in the same manner.
A method according to the invention is particularly useful in decorating and tiling for example, where the decoration or tiling can be done, followed by fixing of the strip so as to give a neat and readily definable edge and finish surface to the work, the surface of the first piece of MDF being undamaged.
1. A method of connecting together two pieces of MDF (as herein defined), comprising the steps of forming a first piece of said MDF with one or more projections, forming the second piece of MDF with one or more recesses, said projections and recesses being complementary to each other, and engaging said projection(s) fully into said recess(es) so as to lock said pieces together.
2. A method according to Claim 1, wherein said first piece of MDF is formed with at least two projections, the second piece of
MDF being formed with a corresponding plurality of recesses.
3. A method according to Claim 1 or
Claim 2, wherein said first piece of MDF has a decorative surface or a pre-finished surface applied thereto.
4. A method according to any of Claims 1 to 3, wherein said projections or recesses are formed with a router or similar apparatus.
5. A method of connecting together two pieces of MDF (as herein defined) substantially as herein defined.
6. A method of forming a decorative strip, an architrive, a skirting board or the like comprising securing a first piece of MDF having one or more projections to a wall or other surface, and applying to said first piece a second piece of MDF having one or more recesses complementary to the projections on said first piece, and pressing said second piece into engagement with said first piece so as to lock said pieces together.
7. A decorative strip, architrive, skirting board or the like constructed substantially as herein described.

Claims (7)
