Description
SPECIFICATION
A folio device for receiving genealogical information
The present invention relates to a folio device for
receiving genealogical information and is particu
larly intended for use when making a family his
tory or pedigree giving details of ancestors and
descendants although may be used for receiving
other information such as, for example, for con
taining information to provide what might be con
sidered as a form book for horses and the like or
other animal pedigrees.
Hitherto, family trees have been set out in chart
form on a single sheet in various arrangements of
data but severe restriction on the information that
can be included and abbreviations are necessary
since single sheets of manageable proportions
have only limited space. Such family-tree charts
have various layout arrangement possibilities on a
single sheet of paper and may have index refer
ences thereon to permit expansion of information
by indexing.
The arrangement of necessary quantity of data is
a particular problem on charts as is the storage of
associated information and documents, such as
newspaper cuttings and birth certificates, etc.,
which, hitherto, have had to be stored separately.
It is an object of the invention to provide a novel
folio device which is capable of receiving geneallogical information in compact manner and which
may also permit the storage of information and
documents within the sheets thereof.
According to the present invention there is pro
vided a folio device for receiving genealogical in
formation comprising rectangular sheets forming
pages for receiving information and each having opposite sides of the same length and opposite lat
eral edges, with a plurality of corresponding ones
of said opposite sides being aligned and fastened
together by fastening means, characterised by the
feature that at least three primary pages are pro
vided for receiving information relating to succes
sive generations, and having opposite sides of the
same length and lateral edges of different length;
and wherein the primary pages are arranged so
that those surface portions of the primary pages
visible in their normally flat position provide a
stepped arrangement descending in a direction
away from said fastening means.
The provision of such a stepped arrangement
not only enables information concerning direct
descendants/ancestors to be received on the visible
portions of the stepped arrangement of sheets, but
also enables information to be received or dis
posed on those portions of the primary sheets hav
ing upper primary pages overlying such and also
enables separate information, documents or arti
cles to be disposed between the various pages at
appropriate positions to thereby enable additional
material to be located and stored therewith in rele
vant or correct disposition.
The sheets will normally be of paper or other
material as may be desired.
The folio device may be provided as a ready bound volume or register with the pages joined together at one side, and possibly having perforated lines or the like to permit pages or portions of pages to be removed to provide the appropriate arrangement of sheets and particularly to enable secondary, tertiary or subsequent pages to be made appropriate for a particular family history.
However, the fastening means will preferably be releasable to permit pages to be added or removed, as desired, in appropriate disposition as will be apparent from the subsequent description.
Preferably, the fastening means will act to clamp the one side of the pages and may comprise a simple, rigid or semi-rigid strip securable by secruing means, e.g. a nut and bolt arrangement, to a backing sheet member which will also be rigid or semi-rigid.
Preferably one or more secondary pages are located or locatable beneath at least one primary page and is or are of the same size as the associated at least one primary page and for receiving information relating to brothers and sisters of members listed on the associated at least one primary page and also other members.
Preferably also for at least one secondary page, one or more tertiary or subsequent pages for receiving information relating to nephews and nieces or collaterals by marriage or other family information is or are optionally located or locatable above a secondary page associated with a primary page and is or are of a smaller size than said associated secondary page. Preferably there will be provided for a secondary page, a plurality of tertiary and subsequent pages having lateral sides of different length and are arranged to provide a stepped arrangement ascending in a direction towards said fastening means.
Preferably a rectangular cover page or sheet will overlie said rectangular sheets and also be secured by the fastening means. As mentioned, said fastening means will preferably be releasable to permit insertion and/or removal of sheets.
To enable the fastening together of said plurality of a corresponding one of said opposite sides in aligned arrangement, register holes or apertures will be provided in each sheet at an identical position so as to enable register pins or the like extending from a backing sheet member or the fastening means or like to be inserted there through to accurately align said corresponding ones of said edges of the paper together. Other apertures, e.g. slots, may be provided in identical dispositions in the rectangular sheets to enable the sheets to be inserted or removed from the fastening means and the interengaging portions thereof.
Preferably self-adhesive labels or other labels will be provided, possibly appropriately marked or pre-printed, to receive genealogical information and such may have the information recorded thereon by typewriter prior to removal of the selfadhesive label, when used, from its release or backing paper for subsequent location on a rectangular sheet at an appropriate disposition. Such rectangular sheets may have appropriate pre-printed family-tree lines thereon or like designs. The labels may be of different sizes to be accommodated in different regions having different size requirements.
Provisions may be made for the attachment of extension sheets so that, in the future, a genealogical table may be extended by subsequent generations to continue the table contained within the folio device as a progression.
It is to be appreciated that the sheets of paper have said opposite sides of the same length and have register holes or other holes or slots for fastening in the same positions, and that the sheets of paper are of sufficient size to receive typed or manuscript information in the visible portions at least in the normally flat position. The various sizes of primary, secondary, tertiary and subsequent pages will be such that in a composite folio device various pages therein but not of the same identity will have the same size to thereby permit rationalisation of use of materials.
The folio device may be provided with mounting means for location as a display own a wall when the information is applied thereto and may have a front transparent cover sheet or box for protecting such.
The present invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic side elevation of a folio device illustrating, by way of example, a possible disposition of the various rectangular sheets;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the folio device il lustratingonly a limited number of stepped sheets;
Figure 3 is a plan view illustrating the folio device of Fig. 1 with a cover sheet omiitted and with the other sheets being in their normal flat disposition and with a limited, illustrative number of rectangular information receiving and displaying labels having been applied to the normally visible upper portion of the primary pages;;
Figure 4 illustrates (not to scale) various labels for receiving genealogical information and the layout which may be provided therefor including marking and which may be used with the folio device according to the present invention;
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are a schematic illustration of an embodiment of a folio device according to the invention wherein an example of a novel arrangement of rectangular pages is provided
The folio device of Figs. 1 to 3 comprises a plurality of rectangular pages la-li constituting primary pages supported on a rigid rectangular backing support 5 of wood and having sides of the same length as the sides of the sheets but of slightly greater length than the longest lateral edge (for example of 400 mm x 1020 mm). Four support stops or feet 5' are provided - one at each corner of support 5.Fastening means for the pages comprise a rectangular strip 6 (of, for example, 400 mm x 75 mm) having two apertures 7 (only one shown) aligned with two apertures 8 (only one shown) in support 5 each for receiving securing means such as a nut and bolt 4.
The primary pages la-li have opposite parallel sides 10 and 11 of the same length, e.g. 400 mm, and opposite lateral edges 12 of different lengths e.g. of 18 cm, 27 cm, 36 cm, 45 cm, 54 cm, 63 cm, 72 cm and 81 cm lengths respectively, i.e. with each page increasing in the length of its lateral edge by 9 cm or other equal increments. The pages have slots 13 in sides 10 for permitting such to pass the shank of the bolt forming the securing means prior to clamping'of the pages.
The right-hand end regions of the primary pages- la-li, as viewed, are visible from above in the normally flat position of the pages and provide a surface for receiving genealogical information, e.g. by way of rectangular labels 9 as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. It will be appreciated that the primary pages la-li have opposite sides 10 and 11 of the same length and lateral edge 12 of different lengths, as mentioned. The primary pages la-li provide a stepped arrangement descending in a direction away from the fastening means (4-8).
A plurality of secondary pages 2a-i are provided beneath each primary page la-7i and are of the same respective size thereas and are for receiving information relating to brothers and sisters, e.g. by way of labels (not shown but similar to 9) as may be appropriate.
It will be appreciated that the pages might be regarded as groups a-i and in group of pages a, a single secondary page 2a is provided; whilst in group of pages b two secondary pages 2b' and 2b" are provided; whilst in group of pages c, three secondary pages 2c', 2c" and 2c"' are provided. In the group of pages d and e, three secondary pages 2d', 2d" and 2d"' and 2e', 2el and 2e"', respectively, are provided. For group of pages f, g and h only a single secondary page 2f, 2g and 2h, respectively, is provided although additional pages may be provided, if desired. Only single primary page liies provided.
For each group of pages a-i, tertiary pages may be provided as appropriate. As illustrated, no tertiary pages are provided for group a whilst a single tertiary page 3b is provided for group b and, incidentally, forms a stepped arrangement descending away from the fastening means. In group c, three tertiary pages 3c' of the same size as each other (and incidentally, the same as pages lb and 2b', 2b") and a subsequent tertiary page 3c" is provided which is of the same size as tertiary page 3b of group b, which is the same size as primary page la and secondary page 2a above it Page 3c" is the same size as page 3d"' as will be referred to subsequently.
In respect of group of pages 6, three secoridary pages 2d', 2d" and 2d"' are the same size as each other are provided under the primary page ldand are of the same size thereas. Tertiary and subsequent pages 3d', 3d" and 3d"' are provided and this arrangement also provides-a stepped arrange mentwithin group beneath primary page ldand secondary page 2d' descending downwardly away from the left-hand edge of the sheets as viewed. In group of pages e only three secondary pages 2e', 2e" and 2e"' are provided beneath primary page le and are of the same size as each other and as primage page 1e.
As mentioned only secondary pages 2f, g and h are provided beneath their respective primary pages 1f, g and h and are the same size thereas respectively.
It will be appreciated from Figs. 3 and 4, that labels 9 of different sizes may be provided to enable the family tree arrangement to be provided on the normally visible surfaces of the primary pages and the disposition thereof will be in a similar manner as is known from existing birth brief charts and family tree charts. Similar arrangements of labels may be provided on the secondary, tertiary and subsequent pages as appropriate.
In Fig. 3 open ended slots 13 are provided in all the sheets to permit such to be entered into the fastening means without complete dismantling thereof and/or without removal of other sheets.
In Fig. 4 various possibilities of labels 9 are illustrated not to scale and by way of example for use with the folio device of the present invention.
It will be appreciated that various modifications may be made to the arrangements, disposition and layout of pages as appropriate without departing from the scope of the present invention. In the example given, primary, secondary, tertiary and subsequent pages are provided in a particular arrangement although by way of the detachable fastening means and slotted pages or other looseleaf file arrangements falling within the scope of the present invention may be provided as may perforated pages.
The pages may be provided disassembled in stacks of different sizes and then arranged within the supporting and fastening means as appropriate to a particular family.
The labels which are preferably self-adhesive may be provided in the form of films or other arrangements.
It will be appreciated that primary pages have direct ancestor details, i.e. the various generations of a family whilst secondary pages contain details of brothers and sisters of the associated primary page whilst tertiary pages relate to nephews and nieces and collaterals by marriage.
Cover sheets may be temporarily secured to good pages by detachable self-adhesive strips to overlie a page to permit rough work to be carried out and may be removed to enable proper insertion of entries in the good pages.
