Abstract
A side wall (4) of a box includes a panel (26) defined by a central portion (30) of an edge of the side wall and by a cut line (34) along which the panel (26) can be separated from the rest (38) of the side wall (4). A blocking flap (16) is hinged to the rest (38) of the side wall (4) along end portions (42) of the edge of the side wall (4) and is hinged to the panel (26) along the central portion (30). For use, the panel (26) is detached from the rest (38) of the side wall (4) along the line (34) and is swung outwards and upwards to form a top closure flap. The blocking flap (16) is swung inwards and downwards about the end portions (42) to close the opening vacated by the panel (26). The entire top of the box, including the blocking flap (16) and the panel (26) can be detached from the rest of the box, which then comprises a tray with open side walls for displaying the contents (such as eggs) for retail sale. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A box
This invention relates to a box and is particularly, although not exclusively, concerned with a box for the transport and retail display of produce such as eggs.
According to the present invention there is provided a box having a side wall which includes a panel bounded by a central portion of one edge of the side wall and by a cut line along which the panel is separated or separable from the rest of the side wall, the side wall being connected along the said one edge to a blocking flap, the end portions of the said one edge at which the blocking flat is connected to the rest of the side wall constituting hinge portions about which the blocking flap and the panel are hingable relatively to the rest of the side wall to bring the blocking flap adjacent to the rest of the side wall to cover, at least partially, the opening vacated by the panel.
Other walls of the box may have closure flaps with which the panel may cooperate to close an open face of the box. Preferably, the side wall is one of two similar, oppositely disposed side walls between which extend oppositely disposed end walls having closure flaps.
The hinge portions may be sufficiently weakened to enable the panel and the blocking flap to be torn away from the rest of the box to provide access to the contents. Similarly, where end walls with closure flaps are provided, the closure flaps may be connected to the end walls along lines of weakening so that the closure flaps can also be torn away.
For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show how it ma be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a blank;
Figure 2 shows a box erected from the blank;
Figure 3 shows a stage in the preparation of the box to receive produce;
Figure 4 shows the box ready to receive produce;
Figure 5 shows the filled box being closed; and
Figure 6 shows the box opened for the display of the produce.
The blank shown in Figure 1 is made from a stiff material such as corrugated fibre board. In Figure 1, solid lines indicate cuts, dashed lines indicate creases and chain-dotted lines indicate perforations.
The blank comprises two side wall panels 2 and 4, and two end wall panels 6 and 8. The end wall panel 8 has along one edge a gluing tab 10. All of the wall panels 2, 4, 6 and 8 have, at their lower edges, bottom closure panels 12. At their top edges, the side wall panels 2 and 4 have blocking flaps 14 and 16 respectively, while the end wall panels 6 and 8 have closure flaps 18 and 20 respectively. The closure flaps 18 and 20 are connected to their end wall panels 6 and 8 along perforations 22.
Each side wall panel 2, 4 includes an inner panel 24, 26 which is defined by a crease 28, 30 formed in the central portion of the top edge of the side wall panel 2, 4, and by an interrupted cut line 32, 34. The cut lines 32, 34 separate the panels 24, 26 from the rest of the side wall panels 2, 4, which constitute generally U-shaped panel portions 36, 38. The outer ends of the top edges of the side wall panels 2, 4 are formed as hinge portions 40, 42 at which the U-shaped panel portions 36, 38 are connected, respectively, to the blocking flats 14, 16.
The box is erected in a conventional manner by bonding or stitching the gluing tab 10 to the side wall panel 2 and by folding in the bottom closure panels 12 to form a base, resulting in the structure shown in Figure 2.
To prepare the box for receiving produce, the panels 24, 26 are separated from the panel portions 36, 38 along the cut lines 32, 34, for example by pressing the panels 24, 26 inwardly as indicated by arrows A. Subsequently, as shown in Figure 3, the blocking flap 16 and the panel 26 of the side wall 4 are hinged about the hinge portions 42 in the direction of the arrows B, so that the blocking flap 16 moves inwardly of the box, while the panel 26 moves outwardly. The same operation is performed on the side wall 2. This movement is continued until the blocking flaps 14, 16 lie flat against the panel portions 36, 38, as shown in Figure 4. In this position, the blocking flats 14, 16 block the opening vacated by the panels 24, 26, these panels then lying on opposite sides of the open top of the box.The box can then be loaded with produce, for example cartons of eggs, and then closed by folding the panels 24 and 26, which then constitute closure flaps, in the directions of the arrows C. Finally, as shown in Figure 5, the closure flaps 18 and 20 are folded in the direction of the arrows B over the panels 24, 26 and secured in position by bonding or stitching. It will be appreciated that the blocking flaps 14, 16 will be held in face to face contact with the panel portions 36, 38 by the produce in the box, as well as by the resilience of the material at the creases 28, 30.
To open the box in order to reveal the contents, the top and side closure, constituted by the closure flaps 18, 20, the panels 24, 26 and the blocking flaps 14, 16 are separated from the rest of the box along the perforations 22, 40 and 42. The top and side closure can then be discarded, leaving an open-topped box with cut-away side walls 36, 38, as shown in Figure 6.
Although the box shown in the drawings has the two opposite side walls provided with the panels 24, 26, it will be appreciated that any one or more of the side walls 2, 4 and end walls 6, 8 may be formed in this way. For example, all of the walls 2, 4, 6, 8 may have panels such as the panels 24, 26.
