Description
SPECIFICATION
Composition
This invention relates to shampoo compositions and in particular to shampoo compositions containing conditioning agents.
Many different compounds have in the past been used as materials which can impart conditioning benefits to the hair when formulated into shampoo systems. Softness, manageability, body, shine, feel and combability are amongst those attributes which contribute to the overall condition of the hair and each of these parameters may be improved by the use of a conditioning agent. In addition, ideal conditioning agents should also not adversely affect the foaming or cleansing properties of the shampoo.
The chemical nature of the many available conditioning agents varies enormously and so do their conditioning benefits. Thus it is not surprising that some should improve some conditioning parameters more than others. For example, a particular conditioning agent may impart good shine or body to the hair but not facilitate combing. Another may markedly ease combing but not improve the feel or style retention of the hair. For these reasons many shampoos contain combinations of conditioning agents which act together to effect the required degree and type of conditioning, depending on the purpose of the shampoo.
We have now found that a combination of a particular polymer or alkyl phosphate and silicone materials can provide improved conditioning performance over a wide range of conditioning parameters, and thereby improve the overall condition of hair. Moreover, this improvement can be obtained in combination with a conventional shampoo detergent system.
According to the present invention there is provided a shampoo composition comprising:
(a) from 5 to 25% by weight of a shampoo detergent base,
(b) from 0.01% to 1% by weight of a quarterised natural or synthetic polymer, or from 0.1 to 5% by weight of a C16 alkoxylated alkyl phosphate, and
(c) from 0.01% to 1% by weight of a cationic or amphoteric organofunctional silicone.
Preferably, the composition comprises from 0.2% to 0.6% of quaternised polymer or from 1% to 3% of alkoxylated alkyl phosphate, and from 0.3% to 0.7% of silicone.
Examples of quaternised natural polymers are:
(a) quaternised protein derivatives, such as a quaternised collagen derivative marketed under the name of Crotein Q (Croda Chemicals Ltd.)
(b) quaternised derivatives of polymeric carbohydrates such as a quaternised guar gum marketed under the name of Jaguar C (Meyhall Chemicals), and
(c) quaternised cellulose derivatives, such as one marketed under the name of Polymer JR (Union Carbide Ltd.)
Examples of quaternised synthetic polymers are::
(a) quaternised copolymer of vinyl pyrrolidone and dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate, marketed under the name of Gafquat 755N (GAF Chemicals Ltd.), and
(b) quaternised copolymer of vinylimidazole, methyl chloride and vinylpyrrolidone, marketed under the name of Luviquat FC (BASF)
Examples of cationic organo-functional silicones are polysiloxane polytrialkyl ammonium acetate copolymers, and examples of amphoteric silicones are polysiloxane polyorganobetaine copolymers. The copolymers preferably have from 0.1 to 10.0 moles of nitrogen, more preferably from 2 to 7 moles, per mole of copolymer.
Commercially available organo-functional silicones are manufactured by Goldschmidt under the trade marks Abil B 9905, Abil B9906 and Abil B9950.
A preferred example of an alkoxyated alkyl phosphate is an ethoxylated oleyl phosphate marketed under the name Briphos 03D by Albright and Wilson Ltd.
Examples of shampoo detergent bases are anionic surfactants, such as alkyl sulphates, alkyl ether sulphates, olefin sulophonates and alkyl benzene sulphonates.
Commonly used detergents of these kinds are the C10-C18 alkyl sulphates and C10-C18 alkyl ether sulphates containing 2 or 3 moles of ethylene oxide. These detergents are generally employed in the form of their sodium, potassium, ammonium or mono-, di- or tri-ethanolamine salts. Examples of these detergents are sodium lauryl sulphate, ammonium lauryl sulphate, mono-, di- and tri-ethanolamine lauryl sulphates, sodium lauryl ether sulphate (2EO), sodium lauryl ether sulphate (3 EO), potassium lauryl ether sulphate (2 EO), and ammonium lauryl ether sulphate (3 EO).
The shampoo detergent base may contain one or more other surfactants of an anionic, nonionic, amphoteric or cationic nature.
The shampoo detergent base may be formulated to enhance the effect of the conditioning agents and may be a clear, opaque or pearly liquid or a gel structure.
The shampoo composition of the invention may also include minor amounts of other ingredients which are commonly employed in shampoos, for example a foam booster, thickener, opacifier, perfume, colouring agent, preservative, protein, and an agent for adjusting pH, the latter usually being in the range 5 to 7.
The shampoo composition of the invention may be prepared by optionally admixing a foam booster with the detergent base at a temperature of from 1 to 99"C, mixing the base with the quarternised polymer or alkoxylated alkyl phosphate, the quaternised polymer being optionally in the form of a pre-dispersion in water, and admixing the organofunctional silicone at a temperature of from 1 to 99 C, optionally with other shampoo ingredients.
Preferably, the foam booster is admixed with the detergent base at room temperature or slightly above. Preferably, the organofunctional silicone is admixed at about room temperature.
The invention is illustrated by means of the following Examples.
