Abstract

The formation of emulsions is prevented by dissolving or colloidally dispersing in one of the liquids a colloid tending to disperse that liquid in the other. For example, water leaking into oil-storage tanks is prevented from forming a water-in-oil emulsion by dispersing in the oil a "hydrophile" colloid, e.g. sodium resin soap; and the formation of oil-in-water emulsions during the water-washing of lubricating or other oils treated with alkali is prevented by dispersing in the water a "hydrophobe" colloid, e.g. iron oleate. Other "hydrophile" colloids specified are glue, gelatine, starch, gums, sulphonic acids, sulphonates, and sodium oleate mixed or not with oleic acid. Other "hydrophobe" colloids specified are fatty acids of high molecular weight, asphalts, clays, and a solution of calcium oleate and gelatine in alcohol and glycerine.
