Abstract
215,888. Heme, J. March 7, 1923. Fluid-pressure.-Valve mechanism adapted to be interposed in the .exhaust passage from the usual triple valve to permit of a graduated release of the brakes comprises a piston 3 subject on its two sides respectively to the pressure in the train-pipe connected at 9<1> and that in the auxiliary reservoir connected at 11<1>. The exhaust passage from the triple valve is connected at 8 and is controlled by a valve 14 on a rod 4 secured to the piston 3. Normally with the train-pipe and auxiliary pressures equal and by reason of the effective area of the piston exposed to the train-pipe pressure being less than that exposed to the auxiliary reservoir pressure the valve 14 is held seated. When, however, the train-pipe pressure is raised the piston 3 is moved to the right to unseat the valve permitting escape of air from the brake cylinder by the ports 13 until the supply of air to the trainpipe having been stopped, the pressure therein equalizes with that in the auxiliary reservoir and the valve re-closes.
