215,682. Browning, J. M. Dec. 18, 1923. Breech actions, sliding breech-block; protecting from dust and rain. - The cover-plate for the ejection opening of an automatic firearm is operated by a lever co-operating with an externally projecting member on the reciprocating actionslide in such manner that retraction of the slide causes the uncovering of the ejection opening and, when the ejection opening is closed with the action-slide in the rear or cocked position, the action-slide is locked. The invention is shown applied to a gas-operated rifle of the kind described in Specification 133,379. The cover 10 for the ejection opening is pivoted at the front of a lever 9 which is pivoted to the side of the breech-body 1. To maintain the cover parallel to the opening, a rib along the top edge of the cover projects into the opening and engages either the top or the bottom edge. The lever 9 is provided with a thumb-piece 9f at the rear, to enable it to be manually operated, and on its lower edge, forward of the pivot 9<a>, with a forwardly projecting arm 9<d>, the forward end 9<e> of which projects upwardly. If the cover is closed, when the actionslide is retracted the handle 8<a> of the slide engages the projection 9<e> and operates the lever to uncover the ejection opening. When the actionslide is cocked and the cover closed, the projection 9<e> engages in front of the handle and locks the action-slide which is cammed back slightly to ensure free action of the sear. The action-slide 8 extends backwards beyond the handle and always closes the slot 1<a> in which the handle works. The handle may be hollowed out for lightness.
