Hydrocarbons, cracking.-In cracking heavy hydrocarbon oils, the oil is pumped under a pressure of 20-300 atmospheres through a steel coil in which the oil is heated to 400-450‹ C. and is maintained at that temperature for 30-80 seconds. The gases and vapours formed during the cracking expand immediately after leaving the coil through a valve into distilling-columns. The oil is passed through the coil at a speed exceeding one metre per second. The reflux oil from the columns is returned for passing again through the coil, and the oil supply is preheated in the columns. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also included examples in which the oil was maintained at a cracking-temperature for 100 seconds and 167 seconds. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
