Abstract

A rotary cutter (15) and a co-operating rotary anvil (18) are provided co-axially with respective peripherally ribbed pinch rolls (16 and 19) which, like the rotary cutter, are heated to weld together in face-to-face relationship selvage strips formed by the cutting operation. This allows the welded selvage to have adequate mechanical strength for it to be used to advance the packages from which it was removed along a production line by the application of tension to the selvage. The rotary cutter (15) provides a very neat seal and the simultaneous removal of the selvage allows accurate registration of the selvage with the line of cut. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for longitudinally sealing and severing a film web The present invention relates to apparatus for sealing and severing packaging film for forming a continuous supply of flat plastics film. The apparatus may, for example, be used to form an enveloping tube around a succession of product articles in a machine which is known in the trade as a form-fillseal machine. The apparatus has other applications.
Advance of packaging film, possibly together with individual product articles, through packaging equipment is always a problem because drawing the film forward from a location ahead of the seal station may result in creasing of the packaging film upon sealing. Furthermore, once the packages are separated from one another and from the upstream supply of film, the action of drawing the film along with the articles from a location downstream of the seal station becomes difficult to achieve. In such circumstances, it is to some extent possible to draw the film along with the finished packages if the packages are formed with a so-called "fin seal" in that the superposed margins of the film are left intact on the package and serve as a pullable protrusion on the part of the film tube upstream of the transverse sealing station.
However, it is an object of the present invention to provide sealing and severing apparatus which enables synchronised feed of product articles and film through packaging equipment while avoiding the well known "fin seal" formation which lead to an unsightly package. U.S. Patent No. 3,753,332 discloses a machine for forming a plurality of sidesealed bags and for closing them by heat sealing along a longitudinal line of the bag chain and subsequently severing the chain along that seal line to remove unwanted selvage material. This two-step sealing and severing process on a travelling web results in either an inaccurate seal of the finished pack due to lateral shift of the severance line relative to the seal line or a much wider seal line than would otherwise be necessary and a correspondingly wider seal i.e. a "fin seal" remaining on the pack after severance.
Accordingly the present invention provides apparatus longitudinally sealing and severing a film web having superposed film layers to be sealed, comprising a rotary cutter to separate selvage strips from the rest of the film layers and rotary heated pinch rolls for welding the selvage strips together wherein one of said pinch rolls is coaxial with the rotary cutter and the other is coaxial with an anvil for the rotary cutter.
In order that the present invention may more readily be understood the following description is given, merely by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a first embodiment of a packaging apparatus in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is a detail of the sealing and severing apparatus used in the machine of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a side elevational view of an alternative embodiment of machine using the same sealing and severing apparatus.
As shown in Figure 1, the machine uses a supply 1 of flat packaging film which is passed around a folding guide 2 to bring the margins of the film upwardly and inwardly into contact with one another to arrive at guide rollers 3 from which the film advances to a sealing and severing unit, generally designated 4.
Upon leaving the sealing and severing means 4, which will be described below in detail with reference to Figure 2, the film comprises a tube 5 and separate selvage 6 which consists of the marginal regions 1a and 1b welded in face-to-face relation and advanced under tension by feed rollers 7.
Despite the fact that the film selvage 6 formed by the marginal regions 1a, 1b is severed from the rest of the tube 5 of film, continued advance of the selvage 6 by means of driven rotation of the rollers 7 will help to advance the film towards and around the folding guide 2.
The sealing and severing means 4 both severs the selvage from the remainder of the package and welds it together and simultaneously seals the package at a "trim-seal"line, i.e. a seal line at which there is no residue "fin" of the longitudinal seal of the film 1 which forms the tube 5 around the product. This heat-severing station is illustrated in Figure 2.
Figure 2 shows that the trimming and sealing means 4 of Figure 1 comprises a first composite roller 14 having a rotary knife 15 near its end portion and a peripherally ribbed generally cylindrical portion 16. A second composite roller 17 has an end portion 18 which serves as an anvil for the rotary knife 15 and a further peripherally ribbed portion 19 which co-operates with the peripherally ribbed portion 16 of the other composite roller 14to weld together the superposed layers of selvage 6 (not shown in Figure 2) passing therebetween.
The two composite rollers 14 and 17 are heated, by means not shown, and the temperatures of these rollers are monitored by thermo-couples 20. Thus the apex of the rotaty cutter 15 performs a heatsealing and -severing operation on the thermoplastic web material at the longitudinal line of intended cut where it is pinched between the apex of the rotary cutter 15 and the corresponding part of the anvil portion 18 of the composite roller 17.
As illustrated in Figure 2, the sealing and severing unit is arranged to seal the film margins above a support table or conveyor along which the film is moving. However, it will be understood that the sealing and severing unit may equally well be inverted and positioned below a longitudinal slot in a support table so as to seal the film margins where they have been brought together under the succession of product articles and guided into the support table slot.
The contact pressure between the composite rollers 14 and 17 is generated by means of a helical compression spring 22 and is adjustable by virtue of a rotary hand wheel 23 on a shaft 24 which is threaded at 25 in a stationary bracket 26 of the apparatus. As the hand wheel 23 is rotated in one direction, the spring 22 will be subjected to greater compression and will therefore provide a greater biasing force to pinch the selvage strips together and to press the apex of the rotary cutter 15 more firmly against the plastic material.
The illustrated device is particularly convenient for application to polypropylene film, for example Grace PP film of either type Y or type MY. Such films may, for example, have a thickness from 15 to 20 microns.
Ideally the temperature of the composite rollers 14 and 17 is controlled so that the temperature of the apex of the rotary cutter 15 is substantially 10% above the maximum melting point of the film used.
The constant pressure, which is adjustable by means of the hand wheel 23, depends on the type of anvil chosen, for example its material stiffness or Shore hardness, and the ability to adjust the pressure is particularly convenient in order to allow optimisation of the cutting operations.
A preferred form of the sealing and severing apparatus has the included angle of the apex of the rotary cutter 15 of from 200 to 40% preferably 300 (a half angle of 15 ) with a radius of curvature of the tip offrom 0.5 mm to 2 mm.
Figure 3 shows an apparatus similar to that of Figure 1 in that flat film is withdrawn from a supply roll 30 upwardly onto a first horizontal conveyor table 31 along which the film is advanced towards a sealing and severing unit 32 of the same general type as that shown in Figure 2. During this advance of the film material, the margins 30a and 30b are folded upwardly and inwardly to come together by the time they reach the sealing and severing unit 32 where the selvage is welded in face-to-face relationship and a trim seal is simultaneously formed to separate the selvage 33 from the thus sealed tube 34.
The main difference between the machine shown in Figure 3 and that shown in Figure 1 is that whereas the machine of Figure 1 is intended to make continuous tubing, the machine of Figure 3 includes means 35 for forming a transverse seal line to separate the tubing 34 into individual packages. This implies that the tubing 34 has been filled while passing along the first horizontal conveyor table 31 before arrival at the sealing and severing unit 32.
Thus Figure 3 shows a finished package 36 being advanced by a second horizontal conveyor table 37, and illustrates the situation just before the transverse sealing means 35 operates to sever the package 36 from the remainder of the filled tubing or casing 34.
The filling operation in which the product is placed onto the first conveyor table 31 will be readily apparent to the expert in this art and does not require detailed illustration or description in the present application. If desired, the individual packages 36 may be subjected to a post-shrinking operation in which case the trim seal formed by the sealing and severing means 32 will be virtually imperceptible.
As in the case of Figure 1, the selvage 33 may, in Figure 3, be positively advanced under tension in order to maintain advance of the product and packaging film material along the machine. Howev er, much of the advancing effort will be achieved by the horizontal conveyor tables 31 and 37 in Figure 3, and by the same token it is possible for additional advancing rollers to be included in the machine of Figure 1, but it will of course be understood that a considerable proportion of the advancing effort will be achieved by the selvage wind-up rollers 7.
The continuous tubing resulting from the machine shown in Figure 1 can be used for various purposes such as forming continuous casings which are then parted off into individual packages which are closed by, for example, clipping. Alternatively, the tubing may be used for the manufacture of packaging bags which may either be of "side-sealed" form in which the open mouth of each bag faces laterally of the web and the individual bags are completed by "side seals" which extend transversely across the web, and are at least partially separated from one another by severance of the web, or alternatively the bags may be formed so as to have the longitudinal axis of each bag extending longitudinally of the film web in that transverse seals may be effected so as to separate the tubing into a succession of bags and to close one end of each bag, thus formed, leaving the mouth of the next bag open. Such bags may subsequently be mounted on carrier tapes for use in bag loading equipment, or may be packaged in any other desirable way for subsequent use.
Another possible variation of the machine using the sealing and severing apparatus of Figure 2 would be one in which flat film is centre-folded and transverse seals are then made in order to define individual pockets (like the above described "sidesealed" bags) into which pockets product articles can be inserted laterally, much in the same way as is shown in U.S. Patent No. 3,753,332. Subsequently the succession of filled pockets can be closed by passing the mouths of those pockets through the sealing and severing unit of the general type illustrated in Figure 2, thereby allowing a "trim seal" to be made and allowing the selvage to be withdrawn, desirably with application of tension to the welded selvage as a means of enhancing advance of the film and product articles through the machine.
Generally, the sealing and severing apparatus in accordance with the present invention can be used with several different types of form4il I-seal machines so as to provide a particularly attractive finished package.
