Abstract
A tin based white metal bearing alloy in which the microstructure of the alloy is refined by the addition of 0.005 to 0.5% Titanium by weight. The alloy contains in wt.% Sb 2-15 Cu 1-10 Cd 0-7 Ni 0-2 Ag 0-1 Pb trace-15 Ti 0.005-0.5 Te/Be 0-1 Co 0-1 Mg 0-1 Mn 0-2 As 0-1 Sn balance
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improved materials
This invention relates two improved alloy materials for use as bearing materials in which the main component is tin.
We have found that, by the use or Titanium in tin-containing white metal bearing alloys the microstructure of the alloy is refined and, as such, the bearing properties of the alloy are greatly improved.
Therefore, according to the present invention there is provided an alloy comprising, by weight, 2.0 to 15.0% Antimony; 1.0 to 10.0% Copper; O to 7.0%
Cadmium; O to 2.0% Nickel; O to 1.0% Silver; trace to 15.0% Lead; 0.005 to 0.5% Titanium; Oto 1 % Tellumium or Beryllium; Oto 1% Cobalt; Oto 1% Magnesium; Oto 2% Manganese, Oto 1 % Arsenic and
Tin the balance.
More particularly the invention includes an alloy comprising, by weight, 2.0 to 15.0% Antimony; 1.0 to 10.0% Copper; Oto 2.0% Cadmium; O to 2.0% Nickel;
Oto 1.0% Silver; trace to 5% Lead; 0.005 to 0.5
Titanium; and Tin the balance. The alloy is preferably a tin-based white metal alloy in which the balance of tin exceeds 75% byweight.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a tin-based white metal alloy in which the nucleation within the alloy is seeded by the addition of 0.005 to 0.5% Titanium.
Thefollowing are examples of alloys in accordance with the invention:
EXAMPLE 1
Antimony (Sb) 7.60% Copper (Cu13.10% Titanium (Ti) 0.18% Lead (Pb) trace Tin (Sn) balance
EXAMPLE 2
Antimony (Sb) 8.70% Copper (Cu) 3.85% Cadmium (Cd) 1.00% Silver (Ag) 0.05% Nickel (Ni) 0.17% Titanium (Ti) 0.22%
Lead (Pb) trace
Tin (Sn) balance
The alloys disclosed have an improved refined grain structure which has the advantagethatthe bearing properties ofthe alloys are enhanced.
The Titanium component has been found to produce the refinement of Cu6Sn5 distribution over a range of cooling conditions. This is believed to stem fromthecrystal structure lattice parameters of the
Titanium crystals offering a closer match to the
Cu6Sn5 structure for seed purposes in the nucleation process.
The preferred bearing alloys may be used in applications such as bearings for marine diesel engineswherethe high strength tin-based alloys substantially free of lead provide high standards of performance.
