Abstract

An auxiliary unit for mounting on a primary glazed structure, comprises a frame hinged to the primary glazed structure with removable glazing beads and fixed abutments to mount a pane or panes of glass. The frame may be mounted on an existing double glazed window or door construction to provide triple glazing. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Multiple glazed windows and doors This invention relates to multiple glazed windows and doors.
It is necessary or desirable in some cold climates to increase upon the effectiveness of conventional double-glazed windows or doors by incorporating an additional pane or panes to produce triple glazing and in some cases quadruple glazing. In cases where the installation is already double glazed it is necessary to provide an auxiliary glazed frame and in some instances there is a requirement to incorporate blinds or the like between the main window and the auxiliary glazing.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a multiple glazing system which is of simple and effective construction compared with those proposed hitherto. The term "multiple glazing" is used herein to refer to glazing utilising three or more panes of glass as distinct from double-glazing utilising two panes and conventional single glazing.
The invention provides an auxiliary unit for mounting on a primary glazed structure such as a window or door, the unit comprising a frame, mounting means enabling hinged attachment of the frame to the primary glazed structure and removable glazing beads associated with fixed abutments on the frame to enable glazing of the frame by mounting a pane or panes of glass therein.
Preferably said mounting means comprises a mounting frame hingedly connected to said auxiliary frame and serving to space same from the primary glazed structure on which the unit is mounted in use, the mounting frame having inwardly directed surfaces at at least the side thereof which is uppermost in use which may serve for the mounting of blinds or the like to be disposed between the auxiliary frame and the primary glazed structure.
Preferably said auxiliary frame and said mounting frame are provided with complimentary catch means operable to retain same against pivotal movement about the hinged connection therebetween. Preferably also flexible sealing means is carried by one or both of said frames to provide a weather-tight seal therebetween when said catch means is engaged.
Said glazing beads preferably comprise extruded plastics strip members adapted to retain a pane or panes of glass between same and said fixed abutments on the auxiliary frame and provided with retaining means engageable with complimentary retaining formations on said auxiliary frame to secure the glass in position.
The auxiliary unit may be fitted in conjunction with a double-glazed structure such as a window or door to provide multiple glazing in which the outer pane or panes mounted in the auxiliary frame are hingedly movable relative to the fixed double-glazed structure and in which blinds or the like may be incorporated between the fixed structure and the auxiliary unit. The auxiliary unit may also be used as an addition to existing double-glazed structures in order to convert them to multiple glazing.
Thus the invention also provides a multiple glazed structure such as a window or door comprising a primary double-glazed frame and a glazed auxiliary unit as aforesaid mounted on the fixed frame and glazed whereby to provide a multiple glazed assembly.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a vertical cross section through a multiple glazed assembly according to the invention; and Figure 2 is an enlarged cross section of part of the structure of Fig. 1 showing sealing means incorporated therein.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a triple glazed window assembly comprising a primary frame 5 glazed by means of a sealed double-glazed unit 6 retained in the frame by removable glazing beads 7 engaged with formations 8 on the frame. The frame 5 is mounted in a fixed outer frame 9 and will generally itself be fixed but could in some instances be a movable or "opening" frame.
An auxiliary unit 10 is mounted on the outer surface of the frame 7 and comprises an auxiliary frame 11 formed from extruded plastics frame components 12 and connected by hinges 13 at its lower edge to a mounting frame 14 screwed or otherwise firmly attached to the frame 5. The mounting frame 14 is formed from extruded plastics components 15 and a locking device or clasp 16 having co-operating components mounted on the auxiliary frame and the mounting frame is provided at the upper side of the frame opposite to the hinges 13 to secure the frames together against pivotal movement.
A glass pane 20 is retained in the auxiliary frame 11 by means of extruded plastics glazing beads 21 having projections 22A, 22B engageable with complimentary formations 23A, 23B on the frame components 12 to retain the pane 20 between same and fixed abutment portions 24 of the frame. Inner and outer seals 25A, 25B are engaged between the opposite faces of the pane 20 and the components 21, 24 to form a seal round the edges of the glass.
The mounting frame 14 is provided with inwardly facing surfaces 28, the surface on the upper frame component being horizontal and forming an anchorage to which blinds of the venetian, vertical or other suitable type may be attached so as to be located between the double-glazed primary frame 5 and the auxiliary frame 12. The blinds may be moved between open and closed positions in known manner by moving a magnet over the inner surface of the double-glazed unit 6.
In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 a peripheral gap is present between the auxiliary frame 11 and the mounting frame 14 except at those areas where the hinges 13 and clasp 16 are fitted. While this is acceptable in some circumstances, it is preferred to incorporate sealing means providing a peripheral seal between the two frames when the clasp 16 is engaged. For this purpose, as shown in Fig. 2, the inner seals 25A may be extended around the glazing beads 21 to provide an additional sealing portion 25C which is compressed between the beads 21 and the adjacent portions of the mounting frame 14 when the auxiliary frame 11 is closed. In this way a continuous peripheral seal is provided around the auxiliary unit which enhances its heat retaining and sound deadening properties and prevents ingress of dust to the space between the auxiliary unit and the double-glazed frame 5.
By virtue-of the hinged connection of the auxiliary frame 11 to the fixed structure 5, the outer pane 20 may be hingedly moved away from the window to enable access for installation or maintenance of a blind or the like housed between the panes. Moreover in the event of the window being broken the doubleglazed unit will in many instances remain intact and only the outer pane will require replacing. The auxiliary frame 11 may then be hinged clear of the frame 5 and the glazing beads 21 removed, thereby enabling the pane 20 to be quickly and easily replaced. It will be noted that the pane 20 is of the same overall size as the double-glazed unit 6 which is also an advantageous feature. By virtue of the provision of the mounting frame 14 installation of the auxiliary unit is simplified and the mounting frame also provides a convenient means of fixing blinds or the like between the inner and outer panes. By the use of different widths of mounting frame the desired spacing between the inner and outer panes may also be altered dependent on requirements.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the invention. For example the fixed fame could be multiple glazed and/or the auxiliary frame could be double-glazed if required. Various alternative forms of seal between the auxiliary frame and the mounting frame may be provided and the auxiliary frame could be hingedly connected to the mounting frame at one side or at the top rather than at the bottom edge.
