Abstract

Arches.-A flat arch for furnaces, ovens, &c. comprises upwardly tapering key bricks f Bexibly supported by tongs g and chains i from movable runners mounted on the lower flanges of beams h, in combination with end bricks b resting on rollers or plates supported bv the walls c and subjected to lateral pressure by springs. Intermediate bricks d and downwardly tapering key bricks e are arranged as shown in the Figure. The sides of the bricks are waved and the arms of the tongs g conform to the shape of the bricks. The indented faces of the bricks are preferably inclined and terminate in vertical portions to obviate the occurrence of sharp corners on the bricks.
