Abstract
A cable treatment tool adapted for use with a wide range of cable sizes has a cable 44 supported between a pair of rollers 34 and is engaged by a cutter 18. The rollers 34 are mounted on a sub- frame 28 which is held in the tool between a further pair of rollers 26, so that the whole subframe can be removed to enable a much larger cable to rest between the rollers 26 and be engaged by the cutter 18. The cartridge 22 holding the cutter 18 allows the cutter to be moved longitudinally or rotated to give a helical cut. A turning cutter 36 on the sub-frame 28 is adjusted by screw 38. A further turning cutter is mounted on the sub-frame 30. The rollers 34 are advanced by handle 32. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Cable Stripper
This invention relates to cable treatmenttools for use in stripping the insulation (and other) sheaths, and of the kind comprising a two-part frame which can be closed around the cable, at least one cutter for penetrating the sheath and a pair of rollers or like for steadying the tool when it is rotated about the cable.
It is preferrred to arrange for the stripper and the rollers to engage the cable at the apices of an imaginary equilateral triangle. This gives maximum support for the tool and the steadiest cut. But it is only possible with a single cable size.
In practice, any one tool is capable of use with a small range of cable sizes, and it is usual to provide a range oftools each covering a different range of sizes.
The limitations on the cable size which can be dealt with satisfactorily are that if the cable is too large it will not enterthe frame. lfthe cable is too small it slips between the rollers. If the rollers are put closer together in a given frame so that the equi-spaced condition applies when a small cable is used, the rollers are too close when used with a large cable and an unsteady and hence unsatisfactory cut may result.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved tool capable of use with a wide range of cables and to make a satisfactory cut in all of them.
In accordance with the invention a tool of the kind referred to has the rollers mounted on a sub-frame which is releasably mounted in the tool between a further pair of rollers at greater spacing than the first pair. Hence, the tool can be used to give a satisfactory cut with two ranges of cables, corresponding to the two different spacings of the pairs of rollers.
If desired, more than two pairs of rollers may be provided, that is to say the sub-frame may fit between the rollers of a second sub-frame which in turn fits between a third pair of rollers, and so on.
In one embodiment ofthe invention described with reference to the accompanying drawing, the frame comprises a first jaw part 10 pivoted about pin 12 to a second jaw part 14, and the two jaw parts can be coupled together by a detachable pin 16. Awheel-like cutter 18 is carried on a fork 20 connected to a cartridge carried within a handle 22. The cartridge construction is one which allows the fork 20 to be advanced inwardly of the frame, that is towards the frame part 14, and also allows the cutter to be turned so that instead of making a cut located in a plane normaltothe axis ofthe cable, a helical cutoran axial cut can be provided. To this end an indexing mechanism 24 is provided.
The frame part 14 carries a pair of rollers 26 carried on a sub4rame 30 which is guided for sliding movement towards and away from the cutter 18 under the control of a screw and nut mechanism including
handle 32. A cable may be supported between the rollers 26 and engaged by the cutter 18, and the relative positions of these can be adjusted by means of a handle 32 advancing the sub-frame 30. This accommodates a first range of cables.
A further sub4rame 28 is shown in the Figure located between the rollers 26, and this in turn carries further rollers 34. Since the rollers 34 can be advanced towards or away from the cutter 18 by the same handle 32 and movement ofthe sub4rame 30, a further range of smaller cable sizes can then be accommodated between the rollers 34 and the cutter 18.
The sub-frame 28 may be frictionally held between the rollers 26.
Adjustment of the handle 22 controls the depth of cut by cutter wheel 18. In addition to this cutter 18, a further cutter 36 is provided mounted on the subframe 28 and this can be adjusted in position by means of a clamp screw 38 and wing nut 40, engaged through a slot 42 in the cutter. This is particularly useful for a turning-like operation for removing a shaving of a thick sheath from the cable.
In the illustrated embodiment, the turning tool is duplicated, by mounting one on the sub-frame 28 and a similar one on the sub-frame 30, so that when the larger cable size is being treated, the same facility is afforded.
It will be appreciated that when a cable is located in position, for example as shown in the chain dot line at 44, and one or other of the cutters are adjusted in position, the tool is generally rotated about the axis of the cable to make the cut.
CLAIMS (Filed on 3.11.83)
1. A cable treatment tool comprising a two-part frame which can be closed around the cable, at least one cutter for penetrating the sheath ofthe cable, and a pair of rollers or like for steadying the tool when it rotated about the cable, characterised in that the rollers are mounted on a subframe which is releasably mounted in the tool between a further.pair of rollers at a greater space than the first pair.
2. Atool as claimed in Claim 1 wherein more than two pairs of rollers are provided, so that the subframe fits between the rollers of a second subframe which in turn fits between a third pair of rollers and so on.
3. A tool as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the cutter comprises a wheel mounted on the other frame part to that provided with said pair of rollers.
4. Atool as claimed in Claim 3 wherein the cutter is journalled in a fork arranged to be movable inwardly and outwardly of the frame and also to be turned about the axis of said movement.
