Abstract

Steel strip is polished by means of a polishing wheel of which the working surface 14 is provided by material constituted by particulate cork in a matrix of a nitrile rubber composition. The cork and the nitrile rubber are present in the polishing material in substantially equal proportions by volume. The wheel is constructed by bonding longitudinally- extending segments 10 of the polishing material to a cylindrical centre 12 and machining the segments to a cylindrical working surface 14. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Polishing wheels This invention is concerned with improvements in or relating to polishing wheels suitable for use in polishing steel or other materials.
Two kinds of polishing wheel are well known for use in polishing steel strip. A very traditional one comprises a large number of thin leather strips secured around a cylindrical wooden centre, the strips extending longitudinally of the centre. A more recently developed kind is one made up from a large number of thin rubber and canvas disks packed coaxially together to form a cylinder.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved polishing wheel and in accordance with the invention in one of its aspects a polishing wheel comprises polishing material substantially constituted by particulate cork in a matrix of an elastomer.
In another of its aspects the invention provides a method of polishing a surface in which there is used a polishing wheel as called for in the last preceding paragraph. Such a method may be found especially suitable for polishing steel strip.
The elastomer is preferably a nitrile rubber composition.
We have found that good results can be achieved with a polishing material in which the cork and the elastomer are present in substantially equal proportions by volume.
There now follows a description, to be read with reference to the accompanying drawing, of construction and use of a polishing wheel which illustrate the invention by way of example.
The accompanying drawing is a view in transverse section of the polishing wheel.
The wheel is constructed by bonding a plurality of segments 10 of a polishing material to a cylindrical outer surface of a tubular centre 12. The segments extend longitudinally of the centre and are bonded by means of a cold curing epoxy resin adhesive. To provide a centre which is light and easy to bond to, it can be of a laminated filler-and-resin material such as that available in the U.K. under the proprietary trade name TUFNOL.
Having secured the segments 10 to the centre 12, end plates (not shown) are fitted and the segments machined to provide a truly cylindrical working surface 14.
In the illustrative wheel, eighteen segments 10 are bonded to a centre 12 which is 15 inch (38.1 cm) long and 7.75 inch (19.7 cm) outside diameter, and after machining the segments provide a working surface of 10 inch (25.4 cm) diameter.
Each of the segments 10 is cut from a sheet of material constituted by particulate cork in a matrix of an elastomer, the cork and the elastomer being present in substantially equal proportions by volume. The elastomer used in the illustrative wheel is a nitrile rubber composition (nominal specific gravity about 0.91) and the material, which is one commonly employed as a gasket material, has physical properties within the following specification: Shore Hardness (Type A) : 70 - 90" Minimum Tensile Strength 28 Kg/cm2 Compressibility at 28 Kg/cm2 15 - 25% Recovery : Around 75% In use of the illustrative wheel, the wheel is rotated about its axis at a speed within the range of 1000 to 1500 r.p.m. to polish steel strip which is passed across its working surface 14.
1. A polishing wheel comprising polishing material substantially constituted by particulate cork in a matrix of an elastomer.
2. A polishing wheel according to claim 1 in which the elastomer is a nitrile rubber composition.
3. A polishing wheel according to either of claims 1 and 2 in which the cork and the elastomer are present in substantially equal proportions by volume.
4. A polishing wheel according to any one of claims 1 to 3 in which said material has physical properties within the foilowing specification: Shore Hardness (Type A) : 70" - 90 Minimum Tensile Strength : 28 Kg/cm2 Compressibility at 28 Kg/cm2 15 - 25% Recovery : Around 75% 5. A polishing wheel according to any one of the preceding claims in which a plurality of segments of said material are bonded to a centre, said segments extending longitudinally of the centre.
6. A polishing wheel substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
