Abstract

A floor covering which is made of polyvinyl chloride and is intended for a motor vehicle, comprising a thick base sheet (3) made of PVC and a thin sheet (4) of transparent PVC, has a printed pattern interposed there between and is joined to the base sheet (3) by means of a thin sheet (6) of coloured PVC. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Floor covering for a motor vehicle Floor coverings made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which are intended for the interiors of motor vehicles and are decorated by printing with vinyl inks are known. These floor coverings are valued for their flexibility, their softness, their durability and the fact that they are easy to clean; however, the printed pattern does not withstand long the wear and tear to which it is subjected during use.
The subject of the present invention is a polyvinyl chloride floor covering which has a printed pattern and is intended for the interior of a motor vehicle, characterised in that the printed pattern is located between the base sheet of the floor covering and a protective layer made of transparent PVC.
For the purposes of the invention, the words "floor covering" also include the so-called "cover mats" which the user buys and fits himself, or any floor mat intended for a motor vehicle.
The protective layer advantageously consists of a film of transparent PVC, joined to the base sheet, and the printed pattern is preferably printed on the back of the transparent film before joining.
Since the base sheet usually has a dark colour, generally black, a characteristic feature of the present invention consists in the fact that the protective layer (transparent PVC film) is joined to the base sheet with the interposition of a PVC film coloured with a background colour for the printed pattern. Furthermore, the floor covering can also comprise a pattern impressed in its upper surface.
It is understood that the usual "heel protections" and/or "foot panel" can be applied on the floor covering as characterised above, as is known in this field. The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a floor covering according to the present invention; and Figure 2 is a cross-section on a greatly enlarged scale, taken along the line Il-I I of Figure 1.
The floor covering 1 shown in Figure 1 also comprises a foot panel 2. 3 denotes the PVC base sheet which will generally have a thickness ranging from about 0.5 to about 4-5 mm, depending on the vehicle for which the floor covering is intended. 4 denotes the protective film of transparent PVC, on the back of which the printed pattern, shown in Figure 2 by means of the bold lines 5, is applied. The film 4 is joined to the base sheet 3 by means of a backing film 6 of coloured PVC which serves as a means for uniting the two elements. The recommended thickness for the films 4 and 6 ranges from about 0.09 to about 0.5 mm.The upper surface of the floor covering has an impressed pattern, indicated by grooves 7, for example so as to form parallei impressed strips which match the printed pattern strips having cross-sections constituted by the bold lines 5 mentioned above.
It will be understood that the present invention is not limited in any way to the shape of the floor covering and/or to the decorative aspects of the printed or impressed patterns, which can be chosen as preferred.
Claims
1. A floor covering which is made of polyvinyl chloride, has a printed pattern and is intended for the interior of a motor vehicle, characterised in that the printed pattern is located between the base sheet of the floor covering and a protective layer made of transparent polyvinyl chloride.
2. A floor covering according to Claim 1, in which the printed pattern is printed on the back of the protective layer.
3. A floor covering according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which the said protective layer is joined to the base sheet by means of a film of polyvinyl chloride coloured with a background colour for the printed pattern.
4. A floor covering according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a pattern impressed in its upper surface.
5. A floor covering substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the attached drawings.
