Abstract
The invention relates to lockable apparatus 1 for mounting on a closure such as an up-and-over garage door, comprising a turnable shaft 5 operated by a handle 6 to turn lever 8 to release a fastening, and a key operable lock. The lock is operatively connected via an eccentric cam 4 with a slidable bolt 11 which can engage with a nose in a recess 12 of a boss 7 of the shaft to prevent turning of the shaft. The device may be deadlocked from inside the door by raising handle 18 to place lug 15 in the path of bolt 11. After spigot 30 has been used to slide the bolt into the locking position. Ball catches 23, 26 engage respectively in notches 27, 25 to index the snib and the bolt in their terminal positions. <IMAGE>

SPECIFICATION
Lockable apparatus
Technical Field of Invention
The invention relates to lockable apparatus, particularly of the kind which is for mounting a
closure such as an up-and-over garage door.
Background Art
Garages are often approachable and hence
usable from outside a house and from inside a
house. Such garages often have up-and-over garage doors which are lockable from the outside by means of a lockable handle apparatus, and can be operated from the inside. However, it is not
usually possible to lock the door from the inside.
This is often a security risk, because a thief can enter a house and can exit through the garage if the door is not locked from the inside.
Disclosure of Invention
It is accordingly an object of the invention to seek to mitigate this disadvantage of the prior art.
According to the invention there is provided lockable apparatus for mounting on a closure such as an up-and-over garage door, comprising a turnable shaft adapted for holding a handle, and a key operable lock which is operatively connected with a slidable bolt to slide the bolt, on turning the lock, to engage the shaft, for preventing turning of the shaft.
There may be a dead-locking device on the side of the lock remote from the keyhole for deadlocking the apparatus in a locked state.
The dead-locking device may comprise a manually slidable lug which may be engageable with the bolt in the locked state of the shaft to prevent movement to a position to provide an un-deadlocked state. This construction provides a simple yet direct action.
The lug may engage an end of the bolt remote from the shaft. This construction provides for ease of manufacture and a direct stop axially of the bolt to prevent movement thereof when deadlocked.
There may be positive locking means for retaining the lug in the deadlocked and un-deadlocked positions. This means provides for a smooth action and for preventing unintentional movement between the two positions. The positive locking means may comprise respective spaced notches or recesses in a surface of the lug and a biased detent which may be engageable in a respective notch or recess when a notch or recess and detent are aligned.
There may also be positive locking means for retaining the bolt in a locked and unlocked condition. This positive locking means may comprise respective spaced notches or recesses in a surface of the bolt and a biased detent which may be engageable in a respective notch or recess when the notch or recess are aligned.
The handle may be detachable from the shaft, for ease of replacement.
It will be understood that the invention extends to a closure such as an up-and-over garage door.
Lockable apparatus embodying the invention is
hereinafter described, by way of example, with
reference to the accompanying drawirig.
Brief Description of Drawings
The drawing shows an elevational view from
the rear, as considered in use, of the apparatus
according to the invention for use on an up-and
over garage door, with a cover plate removed to
show essential parts.
Referring to the drawing there is shown
lockable apparatus 1 comprising a casing or body
2 which is elongate for mounting in a similar
shaped cut-out in an up-and-over garage door (not
shown). The front face (not shown) of the body 2
has the keyhole of a key-operated barrel lock, the
inside or rear end 3 of which is shown and which
mounts an eccentric cam 4 which is solid with the
barrel and thus turns with it when the key is turned. Spaced from the keyhole is a shaft 5 from which depends a handle 6, indicated in dotted
lines. The shaft 5 is turnable (on gripping the
handle 6 and turning it) and projects right through
a boss 7 in the body 2 which is turnable with the
handle, the shaft 5 being of square section and
passing through a square section hole in the boss 7 to accomplish this.Between the boss 7 and an operating bar 8 for rods or wires of the door is a spacer tube (not shown) on the shaft 5. The operating bar 8 is secured to the shaft 5 by a nut 9, and it has holes 10 through which the rods or wires (not shown) are connected.
The body 2 is formed to provide a guide in which a bolt 11 can reciprocate in a longitudinal axial direction as shown by arrow X. The nose or right hand (as viewed in the Fig.) end of the bolt 11 is receivable in a cut-out or recess 12 in the boss 7 to lock the shaft 5, as shown by dashed lines. The bolt 11 has a cut-out 1 3 in which the cam 4 is received. At the end of the bolt 11 remote from the shaft 5 is a dead-locking device
14 in the form of a manually slidable lug 1 5 carried by a slide 1 6 of generally L-shape which can be moved longitudinally axially of the longer limb 1 7 as shown by the double-headed arrow Y.
The shorter limb 1 8 of the slide projects from the side of the body 2 through a slot 1 9 in the side wall. There is a further slot 20 to receive the free end of the longer limb 17, as shown, in the deadlocked position. The lug 1 5 and the longer limb 1 7 thus form a rebate in which the adjacent end of the bolt 11 can be received when the slide 1 6 is moved up (as viewed) to raise the lug 1 5 clear of the bolt 11.
The surface 21 of the longer limb has two spaced recesses or notches 22 for receiving a biased detent in the form of a ball-bearing 23 mounted under pressure of resilient means such as a spring 24 in a blind bore in the body. The recesses or notches 22 and the detent 23 form positive locking means. Likewise, there is a positive locking means in the form of spaced notches or recesses 25 in a surface of the bolt 11 and biased detents in the form of ball bearings 26 mounted under pressure of respective resilient
means such as a spring 27 in blind bores in the
body 2. The respective positive locking means
provide for smooth operation and for unintentional
movement of the respective slidable bolt and lug.
The back plate is held in position by screws which
are received in holes 28, the bolt 11 having an
elongate slot 29 through which a screw to be
received in the central hole passes. The elongate
slot 29 allows the bolt to reciprocate. The back
plate also has an elongate slot through which a
spigot 30 projecting from the bolt 11 passes. The
spigot 30 enables the bolt 11 to be moved manually from inside the garage.
In operation for example to open and close, and to lock, an up-and-over garage door to which the apparatus is mounted, on the outside of the garage door the keyhole and handle are visible, on the inside the limb 1 8 and spigot 30 are visible, with the bar 8.
Normally, the entry for the key is vertical, or at the "12 o'clock" position. The lug 1 5 is then raised clear of the bolt 11, the detent 24 being in lower recess 22 to hold the lug clear, and the left hand detent 26 and recess 25 co-operate, so holding the bolt 11 in the "open" position, its nose being retracted from the slot or recess in the boss 7. The handle 6 can be gripped and turned, so turning the shaft 5, and thus the bar 8 to puli on the rods or wires of the closing mechanism to open or close the garage door from the outside.
If the key is inserted in the keyhole and rotated to "3 o'clock" position, the barrel 3 is turned through 900, so turning the cam 4 anti-clockwise as viewed in the drawing, to the position shown.
This movement is accommodated by the cam bearing on the right-hand (as viewed) boundary side of the slot in the bolt to move the bolt 11 to the right to enter the slot or recess 1 2 in the boss 7, so locking it against turning. The door is then locked closed from the outside.
The door can also be deadlocked closed from the inside even when the lock is in the unlocked state. In this case, the lock is rotated to the 12 o'clock position, the handle is turned to lock the operating mechanism of the door and so as to align the slot in the boss with the bolt; the user then slides the bolt 11 to the right by grasping the spigot 30 and then moving the lug 1 5 to the position shown by grasping limb 18 and lowering it. Alternatively, if the lock is locked from the outside by turning the key clockwise as viewed from in front, to the 3 o'clock position, as shown with the cam to the right, the lug 15 can then be moved from inside the garage to the position shown to deadlock the apparatus. The door cannot then be unlocked from the outside without first moving the lug upwardly to disengage it once more from the bolt.
Turning the key anti-ciockwise as viewed from in front to the 9 o'clock position moves the bolt to the left as viewed and deadlocks the apparatus open.
It will be understood that if the lock barrel is mounted so that its keyhole is normally in the 6 o'clock position, the reverse operations apply for deadlocking, locking and unlocking.
Also, any desired handle 6 can be mounted on the apparatus simply by undoing nut 9 and withdrawing the shaft 5 with the handle, and then replacing with a new handle.
Claims (10)
1. Lockable apparatus for mounting on a closure such as an up-and-over garage door, comprising a turnable shaft adapted for holding a handle, and a key operable lock which is operatively connected with a slidable bolt to slide the bolt, on turning the lock, for preventing turning of the shaft.
2. Lockable apparatus according to Claim 1, including a dead-locking device on the side of the lock remote from the keyhole for deadlocking the apparatus in a locked state.
3. Apparatus according to Claim 2, the deadlocking device comprising a manually slidable lug which is engageable with the bolt in the locked state of the shaft to prevent movement to a position to provide an un-deadlocked state.
4. Apparatus according to Claim 3, the lug engaging an end of the bolt remote from the shaft.
5. Apparatus according to Claim 3 or Claim 4, in which there is positive locking means for retaining the lug in the deadlocked and un-deadlocked positions.
6. Apparatus according to Claim 5, in which the positive locking means comprises respective spaced notches or recesses in a surface of the lug and a biased detent which is engageable in a respective notch or recess when a notch or recess and detent are aligned.
7. Apparatus according to any of Claims 3 to 6, in which there is positive locking means for retaining the bolt in a locked and unlocked condition.
8. Apparatus according to Claim 7, in which the positive locking means comprises respective spaced notches or recesses in a surface of the bolt and a biased detent which is engageable in a respective notch or recess when the notch or recess and detent are aligned.
9. Lockable apparatus for mounting on a closure such as an up-and-over garage door, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
10. A closure, including lockable apparatus according to any of the preceding claims.
