Abstract
Cassettes of tape can be displayed for sale in units according to the invention. A holder 10 has a base tray 12 defining a recess for an article 15 and an upright portion 16. Pivots 20 secure the holder 10 at the top and bottom of the upright 16 in relation to rails 23 screwed to a wall (not shown). The holders 10 can each be rocked to left and right so that three sides of the article 15 can be seen without removal from the holder 10. The base tray 12 is provided with an extension 50 for slidable engagement thereon, and a spring-loaded ball 52 for securing the extension 50 with respect to the base tray 12. The ball 52 can enter into any one of holes 54 in the extension 50, and so adapt the holder 10 for receiving articles of more than one size. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Display units
The invention relates to display units suitable for retailing articles such as books or cassettes of recorded audio or video tape. Such cassettes may be of standard sizes, or offered for sale in cases of standard sizes. The invention is particularly but not exclusively concerned with units adaptable for the display of articles of more than one particular size and shape, and generally rectangular.
Our Patent Application GB 8129827 describes and claims a display unit which comprises a number of article holders each having a base tray with a recess for an article and an upright portion for steadying the article in the base, and pivots securing the holders at each end of the upright in relation to a rail, whereby the holders can each be rocked to left and right and the articles inspected.
Adjacent article holders on a rail are preferably spaced by about half the width of a holder so that three sides of an article can be seen without removal from the holder.
The unit can hold a relatively large number of articles in a way which enables a would-be purchaser to browse as in a library or book shop.
The present invention is a modification of that of the Application mentioned above. According to the present invention, the base tray is provided with an extension or liner, and means for securing the extension or liner with respect to the base tray, so that the holder may receive an article of more than one size. The base tray and upright portion are preferably each an injection moulding of plastics material, for example high or medium impact polystyrene.
The rail may simply be suitable for mounting on a wall, for example by means of screws; it may be straight or curved. Alternatively, the rail may be part of a wall-mountable case, or triangular, rectangular, square, circular or elliptical, and may be mounted on a pillar to form a free-standing unit. The rail may be provided with pivots projecting from an upper and a lower edge, or separate rails may be provided for pivots to engage each end of the holders. The pivots may be on the holders and engage in holes in the rail(s) or on the rails and engage in holes in the holders.
The height of the holders and the separation of the rows of pivots may be such that a holder can be mounted on a rail by raising a holder so that an upper pivot enters a hole and then lowering the holder so that a lower pivot enters a hole without the upper pivot leaving its hole. The pivots may be locked in the holes by means of clips.
Drawings
Figure 1 is an isometric view of an article holder in a display unit according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a schematic side view of the unit of
Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an isometric view of another article holder according to the invention; and
Figure 4, shows from left to right side views and an end view of the holder of Figure 3, the holder in the side views holding a small and a larger article.
With particular reference to Figure 1, an article holder 10 has a base tray 12 defining a recess for an article 15, and an upright portion 16 for steadying the article in the base. Pivots 20 secure the holder 10 at the top and bottom of the upright in relation to rails 23. The rails 23 are screwed directly onto a wall (not shown) and have holes 24 loosely receiving the pivots 20. The holders 10 can each be rocked to left and right so that three sides of the article 1 5 can be seen without removal from the holder 10.
The base tray 12 is provided with an extension 50, and a spring-loaded ball 52 for entry into any one of holes 54 through the bottom of the tray 12 to secure the extension 50 with respect to the tray 12.
The extension 50 has overhangs 56 projecting inwards from the top of each side so as to embrace the corresponding parts of the tray 12.
Through the bottom of the extension 50, there are two slots 58 along each side separated by a connecting filet 59, and in each overhang 56 there is a notch 60, all for ease of tooling and in order to facilitate injection moulding from below.
The spring-loaded ball 52 is integral with an end of a leaf spring 62 cut out from the base of the tray 12.
On sliding the extension 50 in the direction of the arrow in Figure 1, the inside of the base of the extension 50 passes close to the outside of the base of the tray 12. The ball 52 rises up on the inside of the extension 50, and drops into the nearest of the holes 54 to secure the extension 50 with respect to the tray 12. Further pressure in the direction of the arrow dislodges the ball 52 from the nearest hole, and the ensuing movement allows the ball 52 to drop into each subsequent hole 54, reducing the effective length of the tray 12 and adapting it to receive articles of smaller size.
Reference is now made to Figures 3 and 4 in which the same reference numerals have been used as far as possible to indicate corresponding parts. A liner 70 fits snugly inside the holder 10. A stud 72 projects from the bottom of the liner 70 and engages in a slot 74 through the bottom of the tray 12 to secure the liner 70 with respect to the tray 12. The position of the liner 70 is adjustable with respect to the tray 12 by movement away from the upright portion 16 of the holder 10. The stud 72 secures the liner in any desired position. The left hand and central views in
Figure 4 show how the holder is adapted to receive a small article 15 and a larger article 15'.
1. A display unit which comprises a number of article holders each having a base tray with a recess for an article and an upright portion for steadying the article in the base, pivots securing the holders at each end of the upright in relation to a rail, whereby the holders can each be rocked to left and right and the articles inspected, the base
