Abstract

A pallet for an air freight container has a one-piece top having a main portion 14 with two side wings, (one only, 18, shown), which extend from the edges of the top and which are folded up at right angles to the top to extend into the bottom of a container between bottom flaps 30, 32. When the bottom flaps 30, 32 of the container are folded down they trap the wings between themselves and the main portion 14 of the pallet top to hold the pallet to the container. The pallet has there skids 20 and, as shown, these each consist of a length of expanded polystyrene foam encased in a rectangular cardboard sleeve, which may be treated to assist it in sliding, while the main portion 14 and the wings are all part of the same piece of cardboard provided with fold lines. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Pallet for an air freight container This invention relates to a pallet for an air freight container and to an air freight container with a pallet mounted on it.
Pallets are used on air freight containers to keep the bottom of the container off the ground to prevent the bottom becoming damp, and therefore weak, as a result of sitting on wet ground.
Cardboard containers are usually sold, transported and stored in a flat condition, and are only made up into their three-dimensional form at the time when they are being filled with goods. The pal lets are usually assembled to the containers at this time.
According to the present invention, there is provided a pallet for an air freight container, the pallet having a top to which skids are attached, the top having a main portion supported by the skids and wing portions extending from opposite edges of the main portion and joined to the main portion through fold lines.
Preferably the main portion of the top is rectangular, and the wing portions are joined to the main portion along the long edges.
The skids may conveniently comprise lengths of expanded polystyrene arranged within cardboard sleeves. Preferably, these elongate skids are provided which are all parallel and are spaced apart across the main portion of the top.
The invention also provides an airfreight container mounted on a pallet as set forth above.
If the container is rectangular, the top of the container will have a pair of narrow end flaps and a pair of wide side flaps, The width of the narrow end flaps can conveniently be slightly less than the width of the short sides of the container from which the narrow flaps project, to enable the wing portions of the pallet to pass between the edges of these narrow flaps and the long sides of the container.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a partly exploded perspective view of a pallet according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a view, from the inside, of a corner of a container in accordance with the invention, in the course of assembly.
Figure 1 shows a pallet 10 which has a top 12 with a main portion 14 and two wings 16 and 1 8.
Beneath the main portion 14, there are three skids 20. These skids 20 are attached to the lower side of the top 1 2, for example by means of an adhesive. They each consist of a length of expanded polystyrene foam 21 encased in a rectangular cardboard sleeve 23. The latter sleeve may be treated to assist it in sliding.
The main portion 14 and the wings 16 and 18 are all part of the same piece of cardboard, and fold lines 22 and 24 separate the wings from the main portion 14.
Figure 2 shows an internal corner of a partassembled air freight container. For the sake of clarity, the top flaps which will close the finished container, have been omitted from the drawing.
The container has a short side 26 and a long side 28. Attached to the short side 26 is a narrow bottom end flap 30. Attached to the long side 28 is a wide bottom side flap 32.
To assemble the pallet to the container, the walls of the container blank are first manipulated so that they bound a rectangular shape. The bottom flaps 30 and 32 are folded in so as to lie parallel to the container sides and the container is lowered onto the pallet so that the wings 1 6 and 1 8 stick up into the container, as seen in Figure 2.
The narrow flaps 30 are then folded down onto the main portion 14. To facilitate this, the width of the narrow flaps is slightly less than the width of the short sides 26 to leave a small gap 34 through which the wings 16 and 1 8 project.
Finally, the wide flaps 32 are folded down onto the main portion 14 of the pallet top and the container is fiiled with goods. The weight of the goods in the container keeps the flaps 30 and 32 folded down and so keeps the pallet attached to the bottom of the container.
Manufacture of the pallet is easy, since the pallet top consists only of a single piece of cardboard in which two fold lines are formed.
Assembly of the pallet to a container as described is also easy and quick to do.
Claims
1. A pallet for an air freight container, the pallet having a top to which skids are attached, the top having a main portion supported by the skids and wing portions extending from opposite edges of the main portion and joined to the main portion through fold lines.
2. A pallet as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the main portion of the top is rectangular, and the wing portions are joined to the main portion along the long edges thereof.
3. A pallet as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein three parallel elongate skids are provided spaced apart across the main portion of the top.
4. An air freight container mounted on a pallet as claimed in any preceding claim.
5. An air freight container as claimed in Claim 4, which has a pair of narrow bottom end flaps extending from a short side of the container and a pair of wide bottom side flaps extending from a long side of the container, the narrow end flaps being slightly narrower than the short sides of the container so that a gap is defined in the assembled container between the long sides and the edges of the narrow end flaps.
6. A pallet substantially as herein described

6. A pallet substantially as herein described with reference and as illustrated in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings.
7. An air freight container with a pallet, substantially as herein described with reference to Figure 2 of the accompanying drawing.
