Abstract
Hydraulic excavator equipment for working in a plane to one side of the excavator chassis, especially for digging trenches, comprises a two- part boom (2, 3) mounted on the excavator super-structure 1 which can revolve about a vertical axis relative to the chassis. With a view to extending the operating range of the equipment, a pivot link (4) is provided between the upper and lower boom sections (3, 2). The link includes a pivot axis (7), located in a vertical plane, about which the upper boom section (3) can pivot relative to the lower boom section (2). A spacer member (8) extends parallel to the lower boom section (2) between the link (4) and the superstructure (1) and may be of constant length (as shown) to maintain the pivot axis (7) in a vertical position, or of variable length to enable the orientation of the pivot axis (7) to be changed. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Hydraulic excavator equipment
The invention relates to excavator equipment and, more especially, to excavator equipment for working in a plane to one side of the excavator chassis.
A known mobile bucket excavator has a superstructure which can revolve about a vertical axis on the mobile chassis, the excavator boom being mounted on a support which can pivot about a vertical axis on the superstructure. The circle of revolution covered by the superstructure projects laterally beyond the chassis and, by revolving the superstructure and pivoting the boom support, the working plane of the boom and thereby of the excavator bucket can be offset laterally so that trenches can be dug which run to one side of, and parallel to, the chassis. A disadvantage of known excavator equipment for working to one side of the excavator chassis is that trenches with vertical side walls can only be dug to a particular depth and the problem with which the present invention is concerned is that of enabling an increased operating range to be provided.
The present invention provides hydraulic excavator equipment for working in a plane to one side of the excavator chassis, comprising a superstructure rotatable above a vertical axis relative to the chassis and carrying a boom comprising a lower boom section and an upper boom section interconnected by a link providing a pivot axis which is located in a vertical plane and about which the upper boom section is pivotally movable relative to the lower boom section.
In a method of operating excavator equipment according to the invention, the pivot axis is held so that it is maintained in a vertical position. To this end, the link may be connected to the superstructure by parallel guiding means. In an embodiment of the invention, the parallel guiding means includes a spacer member connected parallel to the lower boom section between the link and the superstructure.
In another embodiment of the invention, the length of the spacer member is adjustable.
An extension of the working radius described above is then possible if the length of the spacer member is altered and thus the axis of the pivot linl is selectively dispiaced out of the perpendicular.
Embodiments of the invention will be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a plan view of a hydraulic excavator;
Figures 2 and 3 show side views of the hydraulic excavator, and
Figure 4 shows a side view of a modified form of the hydraulic excavator.
In the Figures, corresponding parts are provided with the same reference numbers.
Figure 1 shows the superstructure 1 of an hydraulic excavator with a boom comprising a lower boom section 2, an upper boom section 3 and a pivot link 4 arranged between the two. A digger bucket 5 is attached to an arm 6 at the extremity of the boom.
Figures 2 and 3 show side views of the hydraulic excavator with the boom in different positions. The superstructure 1 is mounted to revolve about a vertical axis (not indicated) on a mobile chassis and it can be seen that the pivot link 4 provides a further axis 7, which is also vertical, about which the upper boom section 3 can pivot relative to the lower boom section 2.
The lower boom section 2 is pivotally coupled to the superstructure 1 for movement in a vertical plane relative thereto, this movement being effected in the conventional manner by an hydraulic actuator connected between the lower boom sectionand the superstructure. At its outer end, the lower boom section 2 is pivotally connection to the pivot link 4.
A spacer member 8 is also pivotally connected between the pivot link 4 and the superstructure 1, parallel to lower boom section 2. These parts 8 and 2 together constitute a guiding arrangement for the link 4 to ensure, as the lower boom section 2 is raised (Fig. 2) or lowered (Fig. 3), that the pivot axis 7 remains vertical.
It will be apparent from Figs. 1 to 3 that, by turning the superstructure 1 relative to the chassis and pivoting the upper boom section 3 about the axis 7, the bucket 5 can be positioned to dig a trench to one side of the chassis. By raising or lowering the lower boom section 2, different trench floor depths can be achieved.
Figure 4 illustrates an alternative arrangement in which the constant spacer member 8 of Figs. 1 to 3 is replaced by a variable-length member, e.g.
by a hydraulic cylinder 9. It is thereby possible to displace the axis 7 of the link 4 selectably out of the perpendicular and, as a result, the working radius of the excavator equipment can be extended. In particular, it is possible with such an arrangement to bring the digger bucket 5 to a comparatively high level for emptying, as indicated by the position shown in broken lines in the Figure.
Claims
1. Hydraulic excavator equipment for working in a plane to one side of the excavator chassis comprising a superstructure rotatable about a vertical axis relatiive to the chassis and carrying a boom comprising a lower boom section and an upper boom section interconnected by a link providing a pivot axis which is located in a vertical plane and about which the upper boom section is pivotally movable relative to the lower boom section.
2. Hydraulic excavator equipment according to
Claim 1, in which the link is connected to the super-structure by parallel guiding means.

Claim 2 in which the parallel guiding means includes a spacer member connected parallel to

Claims (9)
1. Hydraulic excavator equipment for working in a plane to one side of the excavator chassis comprising a superstructure rotatable about a vertical axis relatiive to the chassis and carrying a boom comprising a lower boom section and an upper boom section interconnected by a link providing a pivot axis which is located in a vertical plane and about which the upper boom section is pivotally movable relative to the lower boom section.
2. Hydraulic excavator equipment according to
Claim 1, in which the link is connected to the super-structure by parallel guiding means.
3. Hydraulic excavator equipment according to
Claim 2 in which the parallel guiding means includes a spacer member connected parallel to the lower boom section between the link and the superstructure.
4. Hydraulic excavator equipment according to
Claim 3, in which the length of the spacer member is adjustable.
5. Hydraulic excavator equipment according to
Claim 4, in which the spacer member is an hydraulic cylinder.
6. A method of operating excavator equipment according to Claim 1, in which the pivot axis is held so that it is maintained in a vertical position.
7. A method of operating excavator equipment according to Claim 4, in which the working radius of the boom is extended by altering the length of the spacer member.
8. A method as claimed in claim 7 or claim 8, substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
9. Hydraulic excavator equipment substantially as described herein with reference to, and as shown in, Figs. 1 to 3 or Fig. 4 of the accompanying drawings.
