Abstract

Head-plate 24 is mounted on the assembly so that it can be rotated between limits (e.g. by 5 DEG ) about the longitudinal axis of the assembly. This enables mis-alignment of heat-plate 23 with support-plate 16 to be obviated. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in drop-head support assemblies The invention relates to drop-head support assemblies for use in the construction of concrete roofs, floors, ceilings and the like.
Our British Patent Specification No. 1551100 describes a drop-head support assembly having a detachable head plate. The head plate is secured in place by bolting directly to a web plate of the support assembly. Direct bolting in this way means that the position of the head plate cannot be adjusted with respect to the drop-head assembly once bolted in place, and due to manufacturing tolerances and slight inaccuracies, the head plate can finish up in a position out of a desired alignment with the drop-head support assembly.
According to the invention there is provided a drop-head support assembly for attachment either directly or indirectly to a prop or the like, a head plate and means for captively mounting the head plate on the drop-head assembly, the captive mounting means allowing rotational adjustment of the head plate relative to the drop-head assembly between predetermined limits.
The head plate is preferably rotatabie through an angle of 50 about the longitudinal axis of the drop-head support assembly.
The head plate is preferably detachably mounted on the drop-head support assembly.
The means for mounting the head plate on the drop-head support assembly preferably comprises a pair of spaced apart, parallel flanges on one of the head plate and the drop-head support assembly and a web on the other of the head plate and the drop-head support assembly, the web being engageable between the flanges and having a thickness less than the spacing between the flanges to allow said rotational adjustment, and means for captively retaining the flanges and web in mutual engagement.
The retaining means preferably comprises a nut and bolt mounted on whichever of the flanges and web are on the head plate and engaging whichever of the flanges and web are on the drop-head support assembly at an edge or edges thereof remote from the head plate.
The nut is preferably secured to one of the flanges or the web, and the bolt is preferably captively retained on the nut.
The flanges are preferably on the head plate and the web on the drop-head support assembly.
By way of example, one embodiment of a drophead support assembly according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a plan view of part of a drop-head support assembly having a head plate rigidly secured to the assembly; Fig. 2 is a side view of a head plate assembly of a drop-head support assembly according to the invention; Fig. 3 is a sectional view along the lines Il-Il in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 shows the head plate assembly of Figs. 2 and 3 detached from the drop-head support assembly.
Our British Patent Specification No. 1551100 describes an improved drop-head support assembly. The matter contained in Specification No. 1 551100 is imported herein by way of reference and all matter contained in Specification No. 1 551100 is to be considered part of this specification.
It will be appreciated that the current invention is not limited to the particular drop-head support assembly described and claimed in our Specification No. 1 551100.
Specification No. 1 5511 00 describes a drophead support assembly having a head-plate 23 detachably mounted thereon, the head plate 23 being rigidly attached to a web plate 10 by means of a nut and bolt. It has been found that, due to manufacturing tolerances and slight inaccuracies, the head plate can finish up misaligned with a support member 1 6 of the drop-head support assembly. Fig. 1 illustrates in chain lines how the head plate 23 can be misaligned with support plate 16.
For the sake of convenience, reference numeral 16 for the support plate, reference numeral 23 for the head plate, reference numeral 24 for a transverse plate of the head plate 23 and reference numeral 2 for flanges of the drop-head support assembly will be used in this specification to correspond to the reference numerals of Specification No.1551100.
Between the parallel flanges 2 of the drophead support assembly, extends a web 50 which can be seen best in Fig. 3. Extending downwardly from the plate 24 are two parallel flanges 51, 52 defining between them a channel adapted to be engaged by the web 50. The spacing between the flanges 51 and 52 is wide enough to allow some free play between the web 50 and flanges 51 and 52.
The flanges 51 and 52 are supported by wings 53, 54, 55, and 56.
To retain the head plate assembly 23 on the web 50, a nut 57 is welded to the flange 51, the set screw 58 is retained captively on the nut 57, the set screw 58 being movable between a first position (Fig. 3) in which the flange 52 is engaged by the set screw and a second position (Fig. 4) in which the channel defined by the flanges 51 and 52 is open to allow the head plate assembly 23 to be slid over the web 50. The head of the set screw is preferably a B.S.W. hexagon bolt in order to accept a normal box spanner used by scaffolders. This has the advantage that no special tools are required for attaching and detaching the head plate assembly.
The free plate between the web 50 and the flanges 51 and 52 allows limited rotational adjustment of the head plate assembly 23 over an angle up to about 5 and this amount of adjustment is sufficient to be able to align the plate 24 with the support member 16 of the drop head support assembly. Too much free play for the head plate assembly would clearly be undesirable.
It will be appreciated that many alternative ways exist of retaining the head plate assembly captive on the web 50, for example with split cotter pins or spring clips, but the use of a captive nut and bolt has the advantage that the nut and bolt are unable to be separated from the head plate assembly.
