Abstract
The pad comprises a substantially laminar portion having a flat major surface which acts as a braking surface in use of the pad, the major surface comprises first and second surface parts provided by friction material (2) comprising part of the said portion and, between the said first and second surface parts, a third surface part provided by a piece (4) of chrome-tanned leather comprising another part of the said portion. As shown, piece (4) is in the form of a strip received and bonded in a groove in a member providing the friction material. The laminar portion is carried by a support member of steel. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A brake pad
The present invention relates to a brake pad, more particularly to a brake pad for use in a disc brake.
According to the present invention, there is provided a brake pad for use in a disc brake, the pad comprising a substantially laminar portion having a flat major surface which acts as a braking surface in use of the pad, in which pad the said major surface comprises first and second surface parts provided by friction material comprising part of the said portion and, between the said first and second surface parts, a third surface part provided by a piece of chrome-tanned leather comprising another part of the said portion.
The said piece could be in the form of a strip, which could be received in a groove in a member of such friction material, comprising the firstmentioned part of the said portion and providing the said first and second surface parts.
The said first and second surface parts could each be relatively large compared with the said third surface part.
The said substantially laminar portion could be carried by a substantially laminar support member of, for example, steel.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front view of a brake pad, showing the braking surface;
Figure 2 is a rear view of the brake pad;
Figure 3 is a view in the direction of arrow A in
Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a view in the direction of arrow B in
Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, a brake pad for use in a disc brake in a motorcycle or, for example, a three-wheeled vehicle comprises a substantially laminar support member 1 made of steel which carries a substantially laminar portion providing the braking surface of the brake pad. The substantially laminar portion carried by the member 1 comprises a member 2 of friction material fixed to the member 1 (parts 3 of the member 2 engaging in circular holes in the member 1) and a strip 4 of chrome-tanned leather received in a groove in the member 2. It will be seen that the braking surface of the disc pad comprises first and second relatively large surface parts provided by the member 2 and, between them, a third surface part provided by the strip 4.
The strip 4 is about 41 mm long, about 12 mm wide and about 4 mm thick. A line 5 is painted in the position indicated in Figure 3 for indicating, when the brake pad has worn down to the line, that the brake pad should be replaced.
The member 2 could be of any friction material conventionally used in brake pads for use in disc brakes in motorcycles, and the pad described has the advantage that it reduces the stopping distance of a motorcycle in wet weather, due to the effect of the strip 4 of chrome-tanned, leather whilst retaining the existing dry weather performance of such a brake pad.
The above-described brake pad can be manufactured from a conventional brake pad for use in a disc brake in a motorcycle, already having the member 1 and the member 2, but with the latter being planar across the braking surface, by cutting a groove in the member 2 for receiving the strip 4; coating a face of a piece of chrome-tanned leather (which could, for example, be of ox or buffalo hide) with a bonding agent, such as "CHEMLOK"; pre-shrinking and de-moisturing the piece of chrome-tanned leather; cutting the piece of chrome-tanned leather into strips each of the appropriate size for strip 4; receiving such a strip 4 in the groove in the member 2 with the bonding agent-coated face inwards; and applying pressure to the strip to ensure bonding thereof in the groove.
1. A brake pad for use in a disc brake, the pad comprising a substantially laminar portion having a flat major surface which acts as a braking surface in use of the pad, in which pad the said major surface comprises first and second surface parts provided by friction material comprising part of the said portion and, between the said first and second surface parts, a third surface part provided by a piece of chrome-tanned leather comprising another part of the said portion.
2. A brake pad according to claim 1, wherein the said piece in the form of a strip.
3. A brake pad according to claim 2, wherein the strip is received in a groove in a member of such friction material, comprising the firstmentioned part of the said portion and providing the said first and second surface parts.
4. A brake pad according to any preceding claim, wherein the said first and second surface parts are each relatively large compared with the said third surface part.
5. A brake pad according to any preceding claim, wherein the said substantially laminar portion is carried by a substantially laminar support member.
6. A brake pad according to claim 5, wherein the support member is of steel.
7. A brake pad for use in a disc brake, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
