Description

SPECIFICATION Divided waterway 3-hole fittings The invention relates to so-called divided waterway 3-hole fittings for installation on wash basins and baths.
The National Water Council bye-laws require the physical separation of hot and cold water supplies in mixer tap arrangements so that backflow of water into the mains cannot occur.
This is commonly arranged by keeping the hot and cold water streams separate until they issue from the outlet spout.
In a so-called 3-hole fitting for installation on a wash basin or bath the fitting comprises a pair of sidecocks each connected to a centrebody, connection assemblies between the sidecocks and centrebody being constituted by respective swivelable connections into the centrebody and respective telescopic connections into or with respect to the sidecocks, these adjustments being necessary to suit the particular spacing and angular relationship between the sidecocks and centrebody since the spacing of the required three holes in such basins and baths has not been completely standardised.
It is a particular problem to make the required connections in the centrebody of a 3-hole fitting, particularly if the centrebody is to be devoid of integral spigot connections so that it can be passed through the central hole of a wash basin or bath adapted for the installation of such a fitment.
The invention has for its object to provide a form of connection into the centrebody of a 3-hole fitting which is particularly simple and very easy to assemble in the usually confined space in which such fittings are generally installed.
According to the invention, there is provided a 3-hole water fitting including a pair of sidecocks, for controlling the flow of hot and cold water respectively, and a centrebody to which the sidecocks are connected, connection assemblies between the sidecocks and centrebody including a double ended "banjo" fitting a central cylindrical portion of which encircles a depending generally cylindrical portion of the centrebody within which separate passages for hot and cold water respectively extend upwards, respective leak-proof seals being formed on opposite sides of said depending cylindrical portion of the centrebody and surrounding apertures opening into the upwardly extending passages by inner ends of resilient sleeves located within respective spigot portions of the double ended "banjo" fitting, the outer ends of said sleeves being acted on by elements with part-spherical portions engaging part-spherical seating surfaces within respective annular nuts engaging screwthreaded parts of said spigot portions, said elements with part-spherical portions being connected to the ends of respective connecting pipes extending from the sidecocks.
The depending generally cylindrical portion of the centrebody will preferably have respective spotfaced flat surfaces on its opposite sides for the abutment of the resilient sleeves, and said resilient sleeves will preferably be surrounded by respective metal sleeves, the arrangement being such that said metal sleeves are able to engage the step portions produced by the spotfacing so that the "banjo" fitting is located in position thereby before the annular nuts have been tightened. The connecting pipes may be connected into the sidecocks by means of respective compression fittings.
In order that the invention may be fully understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which:~ Fig. 1 is a part-sectional front view of a 3-hole water fitting embodying the invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, the 3-hole water fitting there illustrated includes a pair of sidecocks generally indicated 10 and 12 for controlling the flow of hot and cold water respectively, and a centrebody generally indicated 14 to which the sidecocks are connected one on each side. (As can be seen in Fig. 2, the three components are not located in a single plane but are located according to the positioning of the three holes in the wash basin or bath on which the fitting is mounted).
Respective connection assemblies by means of which the sidecocks and centrebody are hydraulically connected are both the same but only one of these is shown in section in Fig. 1. As shown, this is constituted by an assembly including a connecting pipe 1 6, one end of the latter being connected into the respective sidecock by a compression fitting generally indicated 18 and comprising an annular nut 20 bearing against a soft metal ferrule 22 and engaging a screwthreaded spigot connection projecting laterally from the sidecock.
Referring now in particular to Fig. 2, the means whereby the connecting pipes 16 are connected to the centrebody include respective elements 24 with part-spherical portions engaging partspherical seating surfaces within respective annular nuts 26. The elements 24 are attached to the inner ends of the respective connecting pipes.
Screwthreaded spigot portions 28 to which the annular nuts 26 are connected are not formed integrally with the centrebody but are formed as a double ended "banjo" fitting a central cylindrical portion 30 of which encircles a depending cylindrical portion 32 of the centrebody, the latter being provided with upwardly extending separate cored passages 34 and 36 for hot and cold water respectively, the hot and cold water streams being kept separate until they issue from the output spout 38. Respective leak-proof seals are formed on opposite sides of the depending cylindrical portion 32, and surrounding apertures 40 and 42 opening into the cored passages 34 and 36, by resilient sleeves 44. One end of each resilient sleeve bears against a spotfaced surface of the depending portion of the centrebody. The other end of each sleeve is acted upon by the curved inner end surface of the respective element 24, the arrangement being such that as the annular nuts 26 are tightened leakproof seals are produced at the opposite ends of each resilient sleeve. The resilient sleeves are surrounded, as shown, by metal sleeves 46 which are a sliding fit in the spigot portions 28 of the "banjo" fitting and which engage the step portion of the depending portion 32 of the centrebody, that is to say the step provided by the spotfacing, so that they locate the "banjo" fitting in position until the annular nuts 26 are tightened.
Thus there is provided a very neat and convenient method of connecting the sidecocks of a 3-hole fitting into the centrebody. However, various modifications may be made. For example, it may be found that the metal sleeves 46 are not essential. It will also be understood that the connecting pipes 16 could be connected into the sidecocks by various other means, such other means preferably being capable of effecting the required telescopic connection.
