Abstract
212,032. Pickett, F. N. Jan. 15, 1923. Projectiles.-Charges of noxious gas are removed from shells by combustion. The fuze is first detached, and the plug of the charge chamber replaced by a plug destructible by combustion. This is performed as follows: the usual lead seal 1, Fig 1, is removed, and the plug a is forced in about 3/16th of an inch by means of a shouldered punch; the plug is then pushed in completely by another punch and replaced by a cork; or a destructible plug 2, Fig. 3, is interposed between the punch and the plug a and takes the place of the latter when this is dislodged. The plug 2 is made hollow and contains wax, and more wax 3 is put between it and the plug a, the wax serving to seal the plug 2 in its hole. The burning operation is performed in trenches in the open. The walls of the trench are built up of stacks of empty shells 5, Fig. 7, banked with earth 6, and an iron or brick tray 7 is provided along the bottom of the trench to prevent percolation. The shells 10 to be treated are placed on longitudinal rails 9 carried by transverse rails 8; fuel is put in the space around the shells 10; the trench is covered with iron sheet on rails 11; and the fuel is ignited by a train of powder.
