Abstract
In a method and tool for use in the internal deburring of pipes to obtain short chips a transverse force is exerted onto a support (1) for the cutters (3,3') causing a rotation of the tool support (1), so that the cutters (3,3'), which are arranged overlapping adjacent to each other, coming into use one after the other, determine the length of chip. The cutters are rotatably mounted in a rod 2 having adjustable rollers 6, a brake 4 controlling the rotation of the support 1 for the cutters. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
The internal deburring of pipes
The invention relates to a method for deburring the internal surfaces of pipes using deburring cutters arranged on a support, and to a deburring tool therefor.
Inthe internal deburring of pipes, normally a long continuous burr is produced, which remains lying in the pipe. Such an internal burr can be prepared through notching up into chips, for easier separation or breaking.
Long burrs require expensive methods for their removal out of the pipes and the risk of injury arises. As a consequence, it has become common for example, to remove the long burr or chips using water under high pressure. Even in this method though, particu larly where the burr has been notched up into chips, there is the risk of damage to the surface of the pipe interior. This method is not reliable in operation with regard to the setting depth.
The present invention seeks to devise a method and tool, the use of which produces short chips from an internal burr in a pipe, which chips may be of a specified length, safely and with minimal risk of injury. To this end, the method of the invention uses a deburring tool having a plurality of cutters arranged sequentially on a support. Engagement of a cutter with a burr on said internal surface generates a transverse force on the tool causing rotation thereof to align a contiguous cutter for deburring, whereby each cutter removes a separate chip of burr from said internal surface.
Where the internal surface of the pipe has a single continuous burr, the cutters sequentially engage the burr to cut chips therefrom, the length of each chip being determined by the cutting edge on the respective cutter, and the rotation of the tool caused by its action.
Where the burr is discontinuous, the length of each chip is determined also by the length of the respective chips.
A deburring tool according to the invention comprises a plurality of cutters arranged contiguously on a support, the support being rotatably mounted on a deburring rod, and wherein each cutter is oriented such that engagement with a burr on the internal surface of a said pipe causes rotation of the support on the deburring rod to align another cutter with a said burr. Means may be provided for controlling the rotation of the cutter support, although it may be freely rotatable.
Normally, some form of brake will be provided to provide such control. A driving gear might also be provided for driving the cutter support against such rotation.
The invention offers a high degree of accuracy and operating reliability with long service lives. Further, the results of the method are predeterminable and thus, reproducibility and controllability is substantially assured.
The invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 shows a tool according to the invention in plan view;
Figure 2 shows a part of the tool of Fig. 1 with a driving gear; and
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic representation of the forces acting on a cutter.
The deburring tool shown in Fig. 1 has a rod 2 equipped with height-adjustable copying rolls 6, known per se. The tool support 1, rotatably mounted on the deburring rod 2, carries cutters 3,3'. The tool support 1 is also provided with a braking device 4, which is selectively controlled via the control line 5.
Fig. 2 shows the tool support 1 provided with a driving gear 7, to drive the support 1 and cutters 3,3' against the transverse force applied to the cutters when a deburring operation is underway. This may be in addition to or in place of the braking device 4.
Mode of operation:
On engagement of the cutters (3,3') of the deburring tool 3 with an internal burr in a pipe, a force component P (Fig. 3) in transverse direction of the deburring tool is generated by virtue of the inclination of the cutter edge to the rotational axis of the support 1. The force P2 acting on the cutter 3 resolves into an axial component P1 and a tangential component P. The component P causes rotation of the tool support 1, which rotation is controlled by the braking device 4 and/or the driving gear 7 such that the chip quantity which is produced by the emerging of the cutter 3 and the transition-free immersion of the adjacent cutter 3', has a desired dimension.
It will be appreciated that the method of the invention can be used both to completely deburr the internal pipe surface, and to partially deburr, or notch up one or more continuous burrs. In the latter use, the spacing of the cutters and/or the degree of permitted rotation of the support can be adjusted to achieve a desired spacing between chips.
1. A method of deburring the internal surface of a pipe using a deburring tool having a plurality of cutters arranged sequentially on a support, wherein engagement of a cutter with a burr on said internal surface generates a transverse force on the tool causing rotation thereof to align a contiguous cutter for deburring, whereby each cutter removes a separate chip of burr from said internal surface.
2. A method according to Claim 1 wherein the internal surface of the pipe has a single continuous burr, and wherein the cutters sequentially engage the burr to cut chips
