Description
SPECIFICATION
Replaceable weaving heads
The present invention relates to a narrow fabric weaving loom, and in particular to a narrow fabric weaving loom which can be quickly and easily modified to weave different widths of fabric.
Narrow fabric weaving looms are normally provided with more than one weaving head wherein each weaving head is driven from a common source so that during use several fabric strips can be woven simultaneously on the loom. It will be appreciated that the space available to accommodate the weaving heads is limited so that the number of weaving heads which can be adopted depends on the width of the fabric to be woven. Obviousiy the maximum number of weaving heads possible is adopted in order to obtain maximum output from the loom.
Fabric manufacturers normally produce woven fabric in batches of different designs and widths and so have a commercial need to have a weaving loom which is capable of weaving fabric of different widths. Heretofore in order to modify the weaving loom to weave fabric of different widths it has been necessary for each individual weaving head to be removed from the loom and replaced by another capable of weaving a different width.
This is a time consuming and complicated operation and results in the loom being out of operation for a long period of time.
It is a general aim of the present invention to provide a narrow fabric weaving loom which can be quickly and easily modified to weave fabric of differing widths.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a narrow fabric weaving loom including a main frame which supports a main drive shaft and a subsidiary frame which supports one or more weaving heads and includes shafts for the weaving heads which are driven by the main drive shaft, the subsidiary frame being releasably attachable to the main frame and said drive shafts being drivingly connected to the main drive shaft via separable drive couplings.
It will be appreciated therefore that a loom according to the present invention can be modified to weave fabric of different widths by removing the subsidiary frame together with its weaving heads and replacing it with a different subsidiary frame having weaving heads capable of weaving a different width of fabric.
Various aspects of the present invention are hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of a narrow fabric weaving loom according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a more detailed perspective view of the subsidiary frame and weaving heads of the loom shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a more detailed side view of part of the loom shown in Figure 1.
Referring initially to Figure 1 there is shown a narrow fabric loom 10 including a main frame 1 2 in which is rotatably mounted a main drive shaft 1 5.
The main frame 1 2 supports yarn packages (not shown) for supplying warp threads to the healds 20 which serve to create desired sheds for each weaving head 25.
The weaving heads 25 are of conventional construction (2 being shown in the illustrated embodiment) and are mounted on a subsidiary frame 27. The subsidiary frame 27 includes three rotatable shafts 28, 29 and 30 which are drivingly connected to each weaving head 25. In the illustrated embodiment each weaving head 25 includes a reed 32 mounted on a reed arm 33 which is reciprocated by shaft 28. The reed arm 33 is operatively connected to a swivel arm 34 by a link 35. A weft insertion needle 36 is mounted on arm 34 so that movement of the reed and needle 36 is synchronised. Each weaving head 25 includes means for tying in the weft yarn at the selvedge on the opposite side to that of weft insertion. These means can include a knitting needle for knitting the weft thread alone or in combination with a binder or catch thread. In the illustrated embodiment each head 25 is provided with a catch thread guide arm 38 and a knitting needle (not shown) such as a latch or latchless needle, for instance as illustrated in our U.K.
Patent application 8121428. Shafts 29 and 30 operate movement of the knitting needles and catch thread guide arms respectively.
Shafts 28, 29 and 30 project from one side of the subsidiary frame 27 and are provided with drive couplings 40, 41 and 42 respectively which drivingly connect them to the main drive shaft 15.
In this respect shaft 28 is provided with an arm 43 which is pivotally connected to a connecting rod 44 which is driven by an eccentric crank 45; shaft 29 is provided with an arm 46 which is pivotatly connected to a connecting rod 47 eccentrically mounted on the main shaft 15; and shaft 30 is provided with a cam follower 50 which is actuated by the cam disc 49. The drive couplings 40 and 41 may be split by removal of their pivotal connections.
The subsidiary frame 27 is attached to the main frame 12 via bolts 53. Accordingly removal of the subsidiary frame 27 is easily achieved by removal of bolts 53 and splitting of drive couplings 40and41.
It will be appreciated therefore that a user of the loom can quickly modify the loom to weave different widths by replacing one subsidiary frame for another having different weaving heads.
1. A narrow fabric loom including a main frame which supports a main drive shaft and a subsidiary frame which supports one or more weaving heads and includes shafts for the weaving heads which are driven by the main drive shaft, the subsidiary frame being releasably attachable to the main frame and said drive shafts
