Abstract
A disc brake (e.g. for motorcycles) has a caliper (11) secured to a fixed support (as shown a fork stanchion (12)) by a pair of fastening members (35) and (41), of which at least one (41) engages in an open ended slot (40) in either caliper (11) or the support (12) so that the caliper (11) can be released from the support (12) without completely releasing the one member (41). As shown, member (41) is a pinch bolt and the slot (40) is in a lug (32) on fork stanchion (12). The other fastening member (35) is a quick release pin operable by a wire ring (38) and holding arm (29) of caliper (11) in a slot (34) in a lug (31) - pin (35) may be replaced by a bolt (Figure 4). Caliper (11) is shown with two opposed hydraulic cylinders and straddling the inner periphery of the disc - it may bridge the outer periphery. Pads are held in the caliper by split pins or spring clips (Figure 2). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Disc brakes
This invention relates to disc brakes and in particular but not exclusively to brakes for motor cycles.
A problem associated with motor cycle disc brakes in particular, is that if a wheel has to be removed to make for example a puncture repair then it is usually necessary to remove the brake caliper from its fixed support, usually a fork leg stanchion to enable the wheel to be removed. Also on some motor cycles it may be necessary to remove the caliper from its supportto enable friction material pads to be replaced. This is especially so for those brakes described in our co-pending application 81 26424 in which a large annular brake disc is secured by its outer periphery to the rim of a wheel and the brake caliper straddles the inner periphery of the disc.
The present invention seeks to provide a caliper that is easily removable from its fixed support.
Accordingly there is provided a disc brake in which a caliper body is secured to a fixed support by a pair of spaced fastening members wherein at least one of said fastening members engages in an open ended slot in one of the caliper body and support so that the body can be released from the support without the complete release of the one fastening member from the other of the caliper body and support.
Conveniently the other fastening member is a quick release pin which passes through an aperture in the caliper body.
The invention will be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is an elevation of a sector of a motor cycle fork and wheel showing a caliper according to this invention fitted in situ.
Fig. 2 is a radial section through a wheel and the caliper.
Fig. 3 is a section on the Line Ill-Ill in Fig. 2 showing a quick release pin.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line Ill-Ill but showing use of a bolt instead of a quick release pin.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line V-V in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 6 shows the lug on the fixed support as is utilised in the herein disclosed disc brake.
With reference to Figs. 1 to 6, a disc brake caliper 11 is mounted on the stanchion 12 of a motor cycle fork leg. The brake caliper 12 is of the type in which two opposed hydraulic cylinders 13 are arranged to press friction pads 14 against opposed friction faces of a disc 15.
The disc 15 is an annular disc having its outer peripheral margin fastened directiy to a wheel rim 16. The wheel 16 is made of cast aluminium alloy but could be formed by other methods. There are ten or twelve circumferentially spaced bolts 17 which are
used for fastening the disc to the wheel. The method
used for bolting the disc 15 to the rim is the subject of our pending application number 81 26424.
The caliper 12 straddles the inner periphery of the disc and the pads 14 are held in the caliper by split pins 21 which pass axially through the bottom of the caliper. The pads 14 are withdrawn from the caliper by removing the split pins 21 and withdrawing the pads radially outwardly relative to the wheel. Alternatively the pads may be held in position by spring clips 23 (shown in dotted outline) which pass through the caliper in the same manner as the split pins 21, but clip over a detent 24 on the outer surface of the caliper. The clip 24 provides a quick means of releasing the pads from the caliper by merely withdrawing the spring clip 23 over the detent 24.
The caliper 11 is secured to the fork stanchion 12 on that side of the fork such that on application of the brake with motor cycle moving forward the torque load pushes the caliper against the stanchion. The caliper 11 has two spaced arms 29 and 30 which are secured to a pair of lugs 31 and 32 respectively on the fork stanchion 12.
The upper arm 31 is received in slot 34 in the lug 31 and is held in place by a proprietory quick release pin 35 known as an AVDEL pin Fig. 3. The AVDEL pin has a pair of diametrically opposed balls 37 which can be moved radially in and outer of the pin body to either lock or release the pin from its desired position. The pin is operated by means of a wire ring 38 attached to a spring loaded case in the pin.
The lower arm 30 (Fig. 5) has a slot 39 therein which receives the lug 32 on the stanchion 12. The lug 32 (Fig. 6) has an open ended slot 40 therein and a pinch bolt 41 passesthrough the caliper arm and the slot 40 in the lug 32 and can clamp the arm 30 around the lug when the caliper is secured in position.
To quickly remove the caliper from the stanchion 12 the quick release pin 35 is removed from the lug 31, and the pinch bolt 41 is slackened allowing the caliper to be swivelled and the open ended slot 39 allows the caliper to be removed from the slot 40 on the stanchion.
Such a quick release system is particularly useful on racing motor cycles in which a speed change of pads 14 may be necessary. For road bikes the quick release pin 35 may be replaced by a bolt 36 (see Fig.
4).
Whilst the invention has been described as being particularly useful on motor cycle disc brakes, and especially disc brakes of the type shown in our application 81 26424, it could be applied to conventional disc brakes in which a caliper bridges the outer periphery of a disc, and could be used on other.
vehicles.

- **WARNING** start of CLMS field may overlap end of DESC **.SPECIFICATION Disc brakes This invention relates to disc brakes and in particular but not exclusively to brakes for motor cycles.A problem associated with motor cycle disc brakes in particular, is that if a wheel has to be removed to make for example a puncture repair then it is usually necessary to remove the brake caliper from its fixed support, usually a fork leg stanchion to enable the wheel to be removed. Also on some motor cycles it may be necessary to remove the caliper from its supportto enable friction material pads to be replaced. The pads 14 are withdrawn from the caliper by removing the split pins 21 and withdrawing the pads radially outwardly relative to the wheel. Alternatively the pads may be held in position by spring clips 23 (shown in dotted outline) which pass through the caliper in the same manner as the split pins 21, but clip over a detent 24 on the outer surface of the caliper. The clip 24 provides a quick means of releasing the pads from the caliper by merely withdrawing the spring clip 23 over the detent 24.The caliper 11 is secured to the fork stanchion 12 on that side of the fork such that on application of the brake with motor cycle moving forward the torque load pushes the caliper against the stanchion. The caliper 11 has two spaced arms 29 and 30 which are secured to a pair of lugs 31 and 32 respectively on the fork stanchion 12.The upper arm 31 is received in slot 34 in the lug 31 and is held in place by a proprietory quick release pin 35 known as an AVDEL pin Fig. 3. The lug 32 (Fig. 6) has an open ended slot 40 therein and a pinch bolt 41 passesthrough the caliper arm and the slot 40 in the lug 32 and can clamp the arm 30 around the lug when the caliper is secured in position.To quickly remove the caliper from the stanchion 12 the quick release pin 35 is removed from the lug 31, and the pinch bolt 41 is slackened allowing the caliper to be swivelled and the open ended slot 39 allows the caliper to be removed from the slot 40 on the stanchion.Such a quick release system is particularly useful on racing motor cycles in which a speed change of pads 14 may be necessary.
