Abstract
The end of a furniture handle is retained in a mounting pommel 5 by providing the pommel with a bore 4 of dimensions sufficient to receive the spigot 2 with lug 3 thereon of the handle. In order to retain the spigot 2 within the pommel head 5 a disc shape backplate 7 is provided having a bore 8 therein through which part 6 of the pommel may pass. The backplate 7 includes an upstanding abutment 9 which fits the open side of the bore 4 and which has an arcuate cut out 10 forming a saddle which cooperates with an arcuate recess 11 in the pommel head to define a circular aperture through which spigot 2 may pass. The arrangement is such that when the spigot 2 is entered into the bore 4 the backplate may be assembled and the lug 9 serves to close the enlarged part of the bore 4 and to embrace the spigot 2 preventing lateral withdrawal by virtue of the lug 3 abutting part 9. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in handles for furniture
This invention relates to an improved handle construction for furniture and is particularly concerned with a handle of which the ends are carried in a rotatable manner within end mountings or so called "pommels" which are secured to an article of furniture. With such constructions of handle the spigots at the end of the handle itself are free to move in and out of the respective pommels. A disadvantage of this is that the three separate components have to be picked up separately and offered to the article of furniture by the fitter. This slows down production and hence increases costs. Attempts have been made to overcome this problem by temporarily holding the three parts of the handle together, for example by means of an elastic band, but this has not been successful.
An object of this invention is to provide a handle for furniture which has the ends thereof securely retained in the pommel in a manner allowing rotational movement and wherein the parts can be disassembled or assembled as required.
According to this invention there is provided a handle and mounting assembly for furniture comprising a handle part having a spigot enterable into a bore in a pommel part for mounting the handle part on an article of furniture, the pommel affording rotation of the handle when in use, the handle assembly being characterised by a lug on the spigot of the handle which lug and spigot may enter the bore of the pommel, the pommel including a handle retaining part which may be positioned to form an abutment against which the lug may bear to prevent withdrawal of the spigot from the pommel.
The principal advantage of this arrangement is that a handle may be supplied in an assembled condition so that a fitter only need pick up one component and the pommel can be disassembled from the handle as required to enable same to be fitted to an article of furniture. The handle may be fitted without the handling retaining part if required.
The bore in the pommel may have a lateral enlargement so as to receive the spigot and the lug. The handle retaining part is formed by a back plate having an upstanding abutment forming a saddle which fits around the spigot and against which the lug bears to prevent lateral withdrawal from the bore in the pommel.
One embodiment constructed in accordance with this invention is shown by way of example only in the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 shows an assembled handle and pommels,
Figure 2 shows a side view,
Figure 3 is an exploded view of the handle, and
Figure 4 is a section through one pommel and handle spigot with the parts assembled.
Referring to the drawings, a conventional shape furniture handle H has end portions 1 with spigots
2 carrying lugs 3 at their ends and these fit bores
4 in respective pommels 5. Each bore is laterally
of a dimension sufficient to enable the lug to enter
therein and the internal shape thereof is such that
the handle may rotate about the axis of the spigot
2 through an arc of about 160 degrees. A
mounting spigot part of the pommel 6 is arranged
to be secured with the article of furniture and may
be provided with a threaded bore or external
threading or other means of attachment.
In order to retain the spigot 2 within the
pommel head 5 a disc shape back-plate 7 is
provided having a bore 8 therein through which
part 6 of the pommel may pass. The back-plate 7
includes an upstanding abutment 9 which fits the
open side of the bore 4 and which has an arcuate
cut out 10 forming a saddle which cooperates with an arcuate recess 11 in the pommel head to define a circular aperture through which spigot 2
may pass. The arrangement is such that when the spigot 2 is entered into the bore 4 the back-plate may be assembled and the lug 9 serves to close the enlarged part of the bore 4 and to embrace the spigot 2 preventing lateral withdrawal by virtue of the lug 3 abutting part 9.
With this arrangement the back-plate 7 can be easily slipped down the part 6 to enable the spigot of the handle to be withdrawn from bore 4 to facilitate fitting if required, and the parts may easily be assembled prior to supply to ensure the parts are all held together.
1. A handle and mounting assembly for furniture comprising a handle part having a spigot enterable into a bore in a pommel part for mounting the handle part on an article of furniture, the pommel affording rotation of the handle when in use, the handle assembly being characterised by a lug on the spigot of the handle which lug and spigot may enter the bore of the pommel, the pommel including a handle retaining part which may be positioned to form an abutment against which the lug may bear to prevent withdrawal of the spigot from the pommel.
2. A handle assembly in accordance with Claim 1, including two spigots lying on a common rotation axis, each spigot being enterable into a respective bore of a pommel.
3. A handle assembly in accordance with Claim 2, wherein the spigots lie at opposite ends of the handle, each spigot being associated with a separate pommel.
4. A handle assembly in accordance with any preceding claim, wherein the bore in the pommel has a lateral enlaragement to receive the spigot and the lug.
5. A handle assembly in accordance with any preceding claim, wherein the handle retaining part is formed with an abutment surface on an upstanding part of a back plate forming a saddle which locates partly around the spigot.
6. A handle assembly according to Claim 5, wherein the pommel has an opening defining part of the bore, the opening being partially closed by
